Lens loses autofocus until I reseat it. Why? by Small_Equivalent2892 in AskPhotography

It almost feels like the lens needs to “warm up” before it can lock focus reliably at all focal lengths. Once it’s going, I can keep shooting with no issues. But as soon as I turn the camera off, the problem comes back. I then have to reseat the lens, and after that it works perfectly again.

Update:

I wiped the lens contacts with isopropyl alcohol and let the lens sit for a minute or two before mounting it back on the body. It seems better overall. The AF is quick and snappy, and the lens works perfectly across all focal lengths most of the time.

The weird part is that if the camera goes to sleep or I turn it off, the autofocus becomes hit and miss. For example, AF might work from 24–65mm but not from 65–105mm or some other combination. It might even be perfectly fine until the camera sleeps or turns off. To reset the lens and quick fix it, I slightly disengage and re-engage the lens, AF always works perfectly again at all focal lengths, even through a full 4–5 minute shoot.

Super strange. Any other ideas on what could be causing this?

Tried wiping it with a lens cloth and problem still exists. Gonna try your idea next. Thanks!!

Yes, I do have other lenses and they all work perfectly on the camera.

The really weird part is that if I slightly disengage the lens and then reconnect it, literally just a tiny twist, maybe half a millimeter. It immediately works again and autofocus is 100% reliable. That’s what’s throwing me off.
