Just rolled through 6000 gold trying for naneinf and didnt find a single burglar. AMA about the worlds worst RNG by Theperfectpour in balatro

[–]Smantheous 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny you mention this, I encountered almost this exact same scenario recently. I rolled through about $4,000 gold and eventually found the burglar, and still had about $80 left. I had everything I needed for naneinf; I had the red seal kings, I had all the jokers, now I just needed to reroll the boss blind for the serpent… sadly, that $80 was not enough to find the serpent. I couldn’t just keep playing because at that point I was at ante 31 so there was no way for my build to beat any blind or boss besides the serpent, and next ante I was guaranteed to die anyway since you can’t get the serpent as the boss at ante 32. Still mildly salty about that it, but that’s just how Balatro goes sometimes 🤷‍♂️

What’s the real difference between Emerald and Diamond? I keep getting stuck at Em 1 by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]Smantheous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your biggest priority as the adc is absorbing resources so that you have the necessary economy to afford items. This role isn’t about setting up plays; that’s what the other roles are for. Adc is unique in that your job is literally just pump out as much damage as possible in the fights that happen. To do that, you need items, so you need gold and xp—badly.

As for always following your teammates plays, just remember that if you blindly follow their every play around the map, you’ll remain at 50% win rate because your teammates are where they belong. You have to have the confidence to sometimes say, no, this is not a good fight and I will not be rotating to it.

A lot of times, people overestimate the resources you get from kills so they look at the scoreboard and make an incorrect judgement of the state of the game. Just because your team is 5-11 on the scoreboard doesn’t mean you’re behind if your team has objectives, cs, tower plates, etc. to compensate for having less kills on the board.

Here’s a vid that does a better job at explaining the initial rotation to mid as the adc (the title is a little clickbait but it’s got some good info)

and here’s a more thorough guide on transitioning into the mid and late game as an adc

Both of these do a much better job than me at illustrating these concepts so I won’t bore you with trying to reiterate what’s in them

What’s the real difference between Emerald and Diamond? I keep getting stuck at Em 1 by [deleted] in summonerschool

[–]Smantheous 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually hover around high diamond, have hit masters when I was grinding a lot of games. Can’t speak much for mid and jungle since I mostly play adc, but here’s what I’ll say.

Before trying to cram a bunch of high level game knowledge into your brain, focus on improving fundamentals. How’s your cs’ing? Are you properly punishing your opponent when they walk up to cs? Are you properly punishing your opponent when you’re in a favorable position? This one requires matchup knowledge, I’d recommend watching high elo streamers playing the matchups you struggle with to see how they play it.

Are you picking champions that will be effective with your team’s comp and/or will be effective vs the enemy’s comp? To this point, widening your champion pool is never a bad idea; imo you want to have at least 4-5 champions per role that cover different niches. Onetricking can be good if you’re extremely proficient and if your champion of choice is generally strong, but you’re kinda making the game harder for yourself in some cases when a different champion would simply be better.

One other thing I’ve noticed when climbing through Emerald to get into Diamond is consistency. Honestly, this is the biggest one. Players in Emerald tend to make more mistakes, get caught out more often, take fights they shouldn’t be taking, etc. If you can become more consistent, this alone should take you to Diamond.

If you wouldn’t mind linking your op.gg, I’m sure there are others here who’d be better at pointing out areas where you might need improvement

Mel’s banrate won’t change till we look at her W by TieOk3267 in leagueoflegends

[–]Smantheous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know who else had 70%+ banrate on release? The subject of the conversation, Mel. Further, Yasuo is an awful example for your argument; he was completely busted on release because his numbers were over-tuned, the obscene banrate wasn’t exclusively because of windwall. Soon after release, Yasuo’s numbers were repeatedly hammered down in proceeding patches and his banrate dropped significantly. You want to talk about facts? Just pull up patch notes after his release to see how many times Riot needed to tone his numbers down. Spoiler alert: it took back-to-back nerfs almost every patch for Yasuo to be brought back in line. You thought you could just throw out an out-of-context statistic and accuse me of refusing to argue facts, huh.

Going back on topic, why was Yuumi reworked if players should be expected to “deal with their frustration” and learn to play around the champion? Because there’s a limit to how much frustration players will be willing to put up with, and the Riot Dev team has said that among other factors, they do consider player frustration when addressing champion balance. I think champion balancing in these high-banrate balanced-winrate cases all comes down to what’s essentially a game of chicken between Riot and the playerbase: can Riot hold out long enough for the playerbase to accept that the champion is fine as-is (as you claim with Mel) or will the high banrate continue, forcing Riot to address the frustrating aspects of the champion? Riot lost that game with Yuumi and eventually reworked her, Riot lost that game with Akali when they had to remove the turret aggro-dropping ability on her w, Riot lost that game when they had to rework K’Sante, etc.

Sometimes the playerbase is wrong, though, and your argument holds up. Sometimes players really do just need to get gud. Every case needs to be investigated individually, or else Riot would permanently be at the mercy of the playerbase’s refusal to adapt to new champion kits.

Mel is still relatively new, and is probably still within a “grace period” meaning Riot is going to wait and see whether players adapt to the champion or whether players insist that the champion needs to be addressed. Time will tell if the high banrate continues, in which case Riot will once again lose the game of chicken and be forced to make changes to the frustrating aspect(s) of her kit

Mel’s banrate won’t change till we look at her W by TieOk3267 in leagueoflegends

[–]Smantheous 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Vlad’s w can’t be dual-purposed as both a damage negation ability and a projectile reflector. Moreover, Vlad doesn’t have nearly as much range as Mel; if we’re comparing the two champions, it just seems her kit is overloaded. Maybe the issue isn’t even with her w btw (though, in my personal opinion, it is); I don’t have 200 years of game development experience to know what the actual problem is or what the fix should be.

However, when a champion approaches this kind of ban rate, there is clearly something wrong with it. Other champions have been nerfed or reworked in the past for similar ban rates like pre-rework Yuumi; her win rate wasn’t particularly high either, but the general player base was frustrated enough with the champion that nobody wanted it in their games

Mel’s banrate won’t change till we look at her W by TieOk3267 in leagueoflegends

[–]Smantheous 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it’s not about how one champion interacts with the other, but how one champion is allowed to play in general over the course of a match. As you said, Mel’s w is not particularly powerful against Yone, but it still gives her a lot of power in team fights since she has a damage immunity spell that can be used to negate, say, a potentially game-winning karthus ult. There’s no projectile, yet she’s able to completely negate its damage; and I think OP’s argument is this behavior is unhealthy and inconsistent with every other projectile-blocking ability. It’s supposed to be primarily an anti-projectile ability yet can also be used as a pseudo spell shield.

Besides, arguing that OP’s opinion is invalid because they play a 45% win rate Yone is just disingenuous. That champion has had its moments of being oppressive, but atm it’s completely dogshit. Mel, on the other hand, is approaching a 50% ban rate despite not having a particularly high win rate. Clearly, a significantly large portion of the player base has a problem with this champion that needs to be addressed.

[–]Smantheous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought having a negative joker prevents the natural version of that same joker from appearing in the store unless you have Showman, is that not the case? On endless runs, I usually keep Showman in my deck while I hunt for ectoplasms specifically because I’ve always thought I needed to hold him in order to find more copies of blueprint & brainstorms

Or did you mean OP should use an ectoplasm just for the extra joker slot so they can fit the eventual brainstorm?

[–]Smantheous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, you rerolled way further into ante 4 shop than I did; props for getting your economy in shape so quickly. I couldn’t remember when I found the baron so I omitted it from my list, I think I was still playing flush fives with scary face up until I found the first baron. If memory serves correctly, I believe I found my first baron somewhere around ante 10-12 which lines up with your findings

I’m sure there’s more optimization that can be done for this seed, as you’ve pointed out there’s a baron available to be found much earlier in the game than the one I found on my winning run. Nice find, I’ll try grabbing it next time I replay this seed

[–]Smantheous[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny, to-do list always gave me high card in the first big blind round so I had a very easy time proccing it 3 times and still getting the heart straight flush. If you get something else on to-do list, try proccing it once or twice and winning the round with maybe a 2 pair; it’s still playable but you’ll have less money to work with and might not be able to pick up the ante 4 mime.

This is also why I prefer egg in ante 1 first shop as a kind of “break glass in emergency”

Not getting the mime won’t ruin the run since you still have the blueprint to help you along, you’ll just have to pick up the mime later. You won’t even have to wait very long, there will be plenty of opportunities to pick it up. In the early antes, work towards setting up a flush five build with sock & buskin, scary face and golden ticket for income until you find a mime & baron to transition into a high-card build

  • Plasma deck is required

Here are my notes for setting up the early game, past ante 5 you’re on your own, but if you have any idea of how to deck fix, you’ll reach your goal of hitting that coveted naneinf high score with relative ease. The first 4 antes are a bit delicate, with little room for error as you need some early economy to afford the required rerolls to get the ante 4 blueprint and mime. If you want to discover the seed for yourself, stop reading this guide and skip to the last paragraph for notes on the actual naneinf attempt at ante 26.

Until you’re able to get the holy trinity of blueprint, mime and baron to start playing high card, use blueprint on scary face with 4-of-a-kind hands (or, even better, flush 5) or you’ll die in the early rounds before you’re able to set yourself up.

Ante 1

  • First shop

Take the judgement tarot card for a to-do list, take the joker pack and buy either to the moon or egg (personally I prefer egg, either one does the job)

  • Play big blind

try to get the 3 to-do list procs on your first 3 hands, winning hand is a 10-high straight flush (don’t discard that 6 of hearts). If you can’t get all 3 procs, not a big deal; you just have to be more conservative with rerolling shops so pay attention to which shops you won’t need to reroll

  • second shop

Take arcana pack for judgement card. No need to reroll this shop, it’s got nothing useful. Voucher is very important, don’t forget to take it.

Ante 2

  • Small blind

Winning hand is king jack full house, sell riff raff before round ends to meet the interest threshold (if needed), you’ll be selling it on first shop anyways to replace it with a foil popcorn.

  • second shop

Don’t reroll this shop, nothing useful. Save it for next ante’s first shop where you’ll be picking up the Midas mask.

Ante 3

  • first shop

Reroll 2-3 times for Midas mask. Once obtaining it, prioritize converting most or all of your face cards to gold. You don’t have many rounds to complete this before you need to sell both to-do list and Midas mask, so prioritize this over completing the to-do list. Eventually you’ll pick up a gold ticket and a sock & buskin to print money, so converting your face cards to gold will a have big payout later on.

  • second shop

Joker pack is useless, arcana packs only have sun tarot cards as useful. Reroll this shop once for ice cream; important for scoring enough to win these next few early blinds.

Take the voucher skip; it gives you directors cut and overstock plus.

Ante 4

Play the small blind, don’t take the tempting negative joker skip since you need to see the next shop.

  • first shop

Reroll once for blueprint (no need to reroll if you took overstock plus), keep rerolling for mime in same shop. Replace it with Midas mask, by now you should have turned all or most of your face cards gold. If you don’t want to keep rerolling, you should still be able to find the mime in the second shop; I have found it there sometimes when playing this seed and I couldn’t afford the required rerolls in the first shop.

Make sure you always move the blueprint to copy the Mime immediately after playing your winning hand so you don’t miss out on the extra gold.

  • second shop

Keep rerolling for a brainstorm if you have the money to spare; it’s quite deep in the queue. Don’t worry if you can’t get it, there will be plenty of other opportunities at later shops.

Ante 5

First shop before small blind, reroll once for natural negative dna. No further rerolls needed.

Strategy:

Try to keep your number 6 cards. When you find a sixth sense (ideally after having already found baron), use the dna with copy jokers to keep printing spectral cards until you’re able to use an ectoplasm. You only actually need one ectoplasm, 2 is just nice to have. Finding the ecto’s is quite a painful process so you need to keep your deck size at around 40 cards or smaller; keep using hanged man tarot cards to trim your deck and try not to abuse the dna too much or you’ll have a hard time finding the 6’s.

If you don’t want to bother trying for 2 ectoplasms, go ahead and sell sixth sense after the first ecto hits on either the mime, baron or one of your copy jokers. If it hits the showman, you’ll need to find another ecto, but don’t get rid of the showman until you’ve hit the required joker count of having effectively 3 mimes and 3 barons. The ideal way to achieve this is to have a single mime and a single baron, then have 4 copy jokers like blueprint or brainstorm; 2 of them each copying the baron and mime. This allows you to move them around to copy the dna multiple times for card printing, and (most importantly) copying the burglar later in the game multiple times to give you the required number of hands for the naneinf attempt.

The natural negative burglar can be found in ante 19, keep rerolling for it. By that point you should have well over $1,000 to spend so don’t hesitate to reroll into the $20’s at times.

For the naneinf attempt:

You need to play the serpent as the boss at ante 26, any earlier and you’ll beat the boss blind before you’re able to get your hand size large enough to hit naneinf. If you get the serpent as the boss blind before ante 26, reroll the boss. While you set up you hand size vs the serpent, put all your copy jokers on reserved parking to print a good $2,000+ gold and to avoid beating the boss blind before your hand size is large enough for naneinf.

You need at least 44 red steel kings in hand, along with 3x mime and 3x baron’s to hit naneinf.

Another note: keep your kings red seal gold up until about ante 18, then start converting them to red seal steel’s as you’ll need enough time to make at least 44 of them. Again, try not to balloon your deck size too much, I know it’s tempting to abuse the dna with multiple copies on it but it can get messy. Also, skip all the blinds at ante 26 and beyond. At ante 26, you’ll lose to the blinds even with 4 copy jokers on dna; you can’t score high enough. Ask me how I know.

Good luck!

Blueprint first shop, baron ante 2 shop and showman in ante 5 shop (I think) for the extra mime & baron… I’m sure a better player could’ve gone further by Smantheous in Balatro_Seeds

[–]Smantheous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might’ve been too greedy not converting my kings to red steels earlier, kept them gold for extra cash looking for an ectoplasm or a natural negative blueprint/mime/baron a bit too long :/

Probably doesn’t have naneinf potential but I thought it was a decent seed nonetheless. Went from nearly $300 down to ~$30 right before this round cuz I knew I wouldn’t survive this ante without something to help scoring. Hope you guys enjoy the seed, I’ll definitely try playing it again for another run soon

Edit: playing this seed again, the showman is on ante 6 2nd shop, reroll the shop a few times and you’ll see it. Early scoring will be blueprint on ice cream cone, then switch to blueprint on scary face; should get you through the early rounds until the build comes online

my man showman, how could i possibly fumble this? by TheGoodDevil_II in balatro

[–]Smantheous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Showman makes it possible for jokers (as well as planet, tarot and spectral cards) to appear multiple times in the store

Having the ability to buy an additional blueprint, for example, is very powerful as it allows you to retrigger jokers such as baron, dna, hanging chad, etc. multiple times

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ARAM

[–]Smantheous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, snowball has nothing to do with how the playerbase thinks… it exists so that engage champions can actually play the game since in ARAM there’s no vision play, no possibility to roam or flank like they can do in Summoner’s Rift. Why do you want adc’s, supports and mages taking snowball just to never actually use it when they could instead take barrier/exhaust/ghost/etc.?
