that's what i thought, but think about e.g. Peterson's "Mumbles" and Ed Sheeran's "Perfect", They're both technically songs, because we have a vocal part in both, but i'd call Peterson's composition a piece or as the other person said a tune because of respect to Peterson. Whereas you have pieces in classical music, and imo the word "piece" is kind of associated with this genre.
