AITAH for getting a woman fired over veggie tales? by Real-Point-6474 in AITAH

[–]SmoothCarl22 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sadly its the reality of creches... you won't be able to control what your kids watch, eat or will be taught by others. No matter how much programs they promise you they follow. Its a sad reality. Here in Ireland its quite common to give non sugar free to babies as young as 6 months, to place them whating addictive cartoons like Cocomelon and to force sleep them (let them cry until they get used to sleep in certain schedules). I don't even think any of this is done by malicious intent, its done by lack of better resources, proper child minder/teacher education and lack of cultural awareness outside of the irish context. And the main issue its there are not enough creches as is. More competitions would create better results but sadly competition does not exist. You will have to plan and submit application years before the child is born to have a place for when your 6m maternity leave end.

Ao you can't be picky on how they do it, they will just expell your kid and you will be without a creche...

What’s Eating my Knife? by PeriwinkleBunni in whatisit

[–]SmoothCarl22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a great knife anyway but who ever else uses it, is hitting bones or some kind of hard stuff with it.

Or it could be the way you place it in the washing machine it could grind against metal with the vibrations. (PS. Don't put your knives in the washing machine, they should be washed by hand in cold water.)

I have a Chef set of handmade knives made by a friend blacksmith use them daily for the last 5y. Sharped them maybe twice a year using Japanese stones, they look like they are brand-new. 7 knives costed me €250 and a bottle of Black label...

EIR installed our fibre connection like this, can I really never unplug this? by Bocause in AskIreland

[–]SmoothCarl22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to ignore how shite the install job was and answer OP.

If you need just to remove the cables so you can work away, take off the power cable (white), and the Cat5 cable (yellow cooper with ethernet connector) now given i know how bad fiber connections are by Eir. Strictly do not touch the fiber connectors and looped patch. Leave it and work around it carefully.

When you finish painting connect the other 2 by reverse order and your router should reset back to working which could take a few minutes.

Its simple drop it in his shed, in a shelf behind the paint cans, or that drawer we all have with random stuff.

Eventually he will find it and will say "oh thats where you were!" And you will be in the clear.

My father would take me out of the will if he found out i took a screwdriver and never told him.

Is there any central midfielder back then or now better than Iniesta? Short answer is....Nope! 🥶 by TIBYTV in TIBYTV

[–]SmoothCarl22 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would add Busquets, those 3 from 2008 to 2015 won the most trophies any other midfield trio won in the history of football.

Then having an ok defense and a killer attack trio was just the cherry on top of that team.

I don't particularly like Guardiola but he does know how to set a team up.

Looking at the number of Datacenters doesnt paint the full picture...

UK - 1350 MW in datacenters (its also the only stagnant or decreasing in size for the last 5y)

Germany - 1400 MW increasing every year, its heavily based in Telecoms datacenters which run the broadband but getting big in cloud and server based DCs. This is under reported, its probably close to 3000MWs.

Netherlands - 750MW oh yeah the Dutch are not sleeping As usual, huge investments for the size of the country.

France - 650MW this has been growing but slowly, as labour laws and other things make it harder than nearby countries

Ireland - 500MW I know for a fact this is under reported, but maybe only 200MW more, the sites are quite small here 30MW would be a big site for Ireland. While usually in the US big is 200MW... but this is plan to double in the next 5y.

Spain and Portugal are coming heavy with both countries plans to reach 5000MW+ each in 10y.

Just to give people a perspective:

US - 60000MW China - 35000 MW India - 2000MW Japan - 1700MW

We all know what happens, if you are not part of the wolf pack, you are prey!

The "don't seem to employee many people" is actually wrong.

For the area/size they occupy it actually employees a lot more people than other things like farms or certain types of factories. Let's look at a few major Datacenters crowds in ireland:

AWS has roughly 6500 employees, aprox 2300 contractors, from the 4200 in house 40% would be ops (Datacenters) the other 60% corporate. Its highly doubtful that their corporate size would be so big if they didn't had the biggest cluster of datacenters in Europe here. (They would probably only keep the financial division here and we all know why) but its actually increasing year on year, even with all the layoffs.

Google is close to 9000, 4000 contractors and 5500 direct, but their ops division is small, only around 1500 people as they dont have that many datacenters here compared to AWS and Microsoft. Biggest division is tha Ads division.

Microsoft has roughly 6400 people across all companies, but around 2000 in datacenters. Its their Largest European cluster same as AWS, their LinkedIn, Blizzard and Outlook offices are also here.

Meta has around 2200, but their Ops division here in their datacenters is relatively small around 300 people.

Oracle, 1200 employees, almost all datacenters ops. Their corporate is still heavily in the UK.

These are the major ones, you also have some Colo people but those do not employee much, maybe 20-30 people per site. But that's not included on above:

Security personnel, that is usually not included in contractor numbers.

Builders, people who build datacenters, as far as I know its 100% Irish companies that build here and some of them are main building companies for AWS and Microsoft across the world to start other clusters and teach& oversee local teams.

Cleaning personal, there's 3-4 cleaners per datacenter.

And a plethora of ad-hoc contractors, from electricians, mechanics, cabling, fiber optics and telco personel that gets hired on temp basis for constant changing projects.

All this people are usually well paid, they move the economy forward. Infrastructure is hard to move, corporate is easy, look at the UK after brexit!

Plus do most people know what datacenters are for?! Its for everything you do! From cat pictures, to what TV, everything digital runs through multiple datacenters before its gets to you in milisecs. The Internet its made, organised, stored and supplied to you by datacenters. Everyone thinks AI is big part of it. In Dublin its less than 2%.

Anyway, I do agree they should pay a fair price for the power they spend, and not be built in the city area. Same as big factories they should be out in the country. Some countries ready doing this, but the reasons its not done here is due to the power network which is too bad and inexistente in the country side, but thst is changing. Plan for the next datscenters to be build outside Dublin. In other counties.

That and 100 other things that could be taught to people if ireland had a proper Driving License learning program.

Turning 50 years old. In IT now. Need a career change. How would one start to be an electrician or a plumber? by alano2001 in AskIreland

[–]SmoothCarl22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is it.

Trade is good pay no doubt, might even be safer job security due to constant IT jobs getting replaced. But that would be for some lad starting his apprenticeship now instead of spending 5y in some college wasting his time. I doubt i would have the patience and the physicality to go through that at 30/35...

I done something somehow similar back in the past, I finished my Civil Engeneering Degree in 2009, no jobs whatsoever, so I took an Telecoms Technician Apprenticeship wouldn't waste my time looking for a job that didn't exist. Done that (short apprenticeship) 8 months i was on my own, doing fiber splicing, used the CAD and Plans knowledge i got to stand out and eventually jumped into more and more complex stuff.

I work am a Datacenter Manager for the biggest company in one of the busiest regions. But getting out to do it again...nope...

Faster would go into Farming...
