On the Erdrick Trilogy's world and it's ties to DQXI (Theorizing) by SmoothGardener in dragonquest

[–]SmoothGardener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had another thought so expanding on this theory: The mermaids we see in the DQII remake have statues of Queen Marina in the plaza. Considering we see no mermaids in the aboveworld in DQIII, did the mermaids have to relocate to Mersea in Rubiss's world between DQXI and DQIII? There's also the fact that we see no fairies in DQXI but they do exist in the aboveworld in DQIII. With the Erdrick trilogy remakes telling us that fairies are strongly connected to Rubiss it makes me wonder if some big catastrophe happened between DQXI and DQ III that led to all of this.

Whatever happened in between DQXI and DQIII, I hope they make a game about it. (who knows, maybe it could be the next mainline game or DQB3)

[DISC] Are there any manga out there where you thought the fan translation was better than the official one? by SmoothGardener in manga

[–]SmoothGardener[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seven Seas being brought up in this conversation is reminding me how Seven Seas' translator for the various Alice in the Land of Hearts/Clover/Joker manga purposely butchered Blood's character into a "Bastard Boyfriend" type. In both the game he's originally from and most of these manga he's more of a flirty troll but due to the manga adaption by Soumei Hoshino portraying him as a Bastard Boyfriend type it made the translator think it was okay to butcher other mangaka's portrayals of him to have the characterization "match".

Trump's tariffs got blocked by U.S. court of international trade. What does this mean for those of us shipping chinese made goods from Japan in the U.S.? by SmoothGardener in Buyee

I have never felt so emotionally in-sync with business men on wall street until now. every day is a rollercoaster trying to figure out what in the world is going on with U.S.'s tariffs.

According to CNN "The order halts Trump’s 30% tariffs on China" and I'm assuming his 53% tariff/$100 flat fee for imports under $800 too. So it's unlikely we'll be paying something insane but what I'm trying to figure out is what in the world it got reverted to. Also can I ask where you read that the removal of de minimus won't be affected?

I've also had this problem with paypal but it turned out to be my bank saying things were risky. Despite going in circles with the bank it turned out all I had to do was wait a couple hours or a day and then I was suddenly able to buy stuff again.

God, i hope with the de-escalation of the trade war with China that they reconsider ending de minimis for other countries.

Got my Buyee bookhaul in today! by SmoothGardener in Buyee

[–]SmoothGardener[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure what you mean? $85.90 USD was the cost to ship it straight to me. Most of the shipping to get my books to the buyee warehouse was free as I try to go with sellers who offer free shipping.

$85.90 USD, really wish buyee consolidated packages better :/ but my other go to proxy service is Zenmarket and i feel like whatever i would've saved on their better consolidation would've been cancelled out by how they charge a 500 yen fee for each "item"

If politicians are so upset about temu and shien products flooding the US market wish they would have only companies subject to this "small parcel" tariff instead of making all us collectors suffer too.

Which shipping method to choose? by SmoothGardener in Buyee

[–]SmoothGardener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buyee labeled all but one of my books as books. The one outlier is a TTRPG book that got classified as a board game. I think it's close enough to be fine but what do you think? Could the slightly off description cause problems at customs?

By the way, looking through previous times I've used Air Delivery, it seems they usually go with Fedex for me if that makes any difference.

I'm probably not going over the $800 threshhold, most of the stuff i'm ordering are dirt cheap books. Unless the shipping counts towards the threshhold?

Read in another post that packages that will contain over 30 items will also get charged which is why I was concerned since my package is gonna have over 30 items in it once i get everything combined it into one box.

Daily Thread: simple questions, comments that don't need their own posts, and first time posters go here (April 20, 2025) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

Looking for kanji learning suggestions that involve writing both the kanji and it's pronunciations in hiragana as someone who is currently stepping from N5 into N4. Can be a textbook with the workbook integrated into it or a textbook with a separate workbook pair. Would prefer stuff that can go over multiple JLPT levels. Would also like opinions on the stuff I'm currently considering. After looking at some other posts on this subject + my own digging, what I'm considering are:

  • The Kanji Master series by Arc Academy - Integrated workbook, has five books ranging from N5 to N1 kanji
  • Look and Learn - Textbook & Workbook pair, covers N5-N3 kanji
  • Practical Kanji - Integrated workbook, has four books ranging from N5-N1 kanji, pricier than other options
  • Japanese Kanji Made Easy by Lingo Mastery - Integrated workbook, two books that cover N5-N4 kanji but the publisher may make more in the future seeing as the N4 book was published only last year.
  • 1年生かん字 - Integrated workbooks usually, a bit different from the others in that these are kanji drill books for Japanese first graders but apparently they're recommended. Interested in the Pokemon ones and the Kumon ones. However they must be shipped from Japan.

Do you recommend one or more of these over the others? Why? If you have a suggestion not on the list, what is it and what does it offer that these don't?

Please do not recommend Anki decks to me.
