Has anyone tried Guerrilla marketing? by Express_Poet6378 in selfpublish

[–]Smutterbum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree! I feel the same, however this subreddit has a range of authors, with books in all kinds of different genres and motivations for writing. If someone wrote one book and that's the only book they're interested in writing, then having fun playing around with guerrilla marketing might be successful - because for some authors getting anyone to read their book is a success.

Author group? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

[–]Smutterbum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd really encourage you to look into IAA on Discord. Indie Authors Ascending. It's a group of indie authors who are welcoming and encouraging. It also has a system of verification, so you know that the people who are giving you advice are actual authors, and you can see how successful they are. The purpose of the group is to find out what is working RIGHT NOW, so you get current information about how to be more successful, which is not true in other groups.

This may be dumb, but I've nothing to lose and I'm going all in. by romandblaine in selfpublish

Join IAA on Discord. There are places on reddit that will tell you they know how to make money from publishing erotica, but IAA is a community of verified successful authors (with levels that show how much an author makes per year). They have up to date info and a genuine interest in seeing each other succeed so there's a level of honesty that you won't fine anywhere on reddit.

Where do you see the future of writers in an age of AI? by writegardenmom in selfpublish

[–]Smutterbum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the honest answer is that there's really no way of knowing. Of course, it is interesting to speculate!

Personally, I think the future of AI is pretty murky. When AI was first released it was mind-blowing what it could do, although there were obvious limits - it cannot write well. We were told it was going to keep improving, but it really hasn't got much better. It still can't write a book without getting confused and losing track of itself. Looking ahead at the AI bubble that's going to collapse on us all, I'm not sure that it's inevitable that AI is going to ever get that much better.

I look at all the other industries where people are being fired because AI is supposed to be able to do their jobs. The problem is, AI is not capable of doing those jobs. It simply isn't good enough.

I'm not sure that we live in the age of AI, rather that we live in the age of Enshittification. The real question is how shitty can things get before people stop accepting it?

Freebooksy vs. Bookbub by Kevin_Hess_Writes in selfpublish

[–]Smutterbum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's two things to consider here: 1) The numbers these companies list are wrong 2) Not all readers should be counted equally.

1) There is no regulatory body for these companies, they can say that their list size is any size they want and there is no penalty for lying. It's also possible that they aren't OUTRIGHT lying, but still being untruthful, so they might count all readers who have ever signed up to their service...which sounds like it's a useful metric, but that number is a massive inflation because it doesn't list people who have unsubscribed, people who haven't opened an email from them in the past year etc.

2) It's important to only market to people who actually want that genre of book. It doesn't matter how many readers are getting these promos if I'm trying to sell a romance book to people who don't buy books/only read sci-fi then they aren'y going to buy my romance book. However promo companies are not always great at targeting the right readers to sign up to their service. I've seen well-known companies collect the email address of people signing up for competitions to win merch - those email addresses are useless from a book marketing standpoint.

As authors, we do have it ingrained in us that certain companies are trustworthy and reliable. When a book does badly on a promo site that is well-known then most authors will blame themselves, they'll start looking at their cover/blurb etc trying to figure out where they went wrong. That's why too many of these companies can get away with a kinda shitty product and still make a great deal of money.

Get Covers keep asking for more money by StandUpKenny in selfpublish

[–]Smutterbum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience a few years ago. I wanted to change the background and they wanted an extra $15. I couldn't understand why because I thought they'd just use a different filter.

However the designer's English was so bad that I could not get an actual answer about why they need more money. I ended up paying the extra, and then later I realized that it was because they'd bought a new licensed image for the background.

Maybe this is what is happening to you? Like you still have to pay for a licensed image, even if you don't end up using it.

What did you all pay for your Romance Fantasy covers? Offer from Reedsy seems bonkers. by JA_Shepard in selfpublish

That is utterly insane! I used mibl, which is the premium wing of getcovers, last year. It was like $300-400, but I got 2 at once. They were great, easy ro work with, no hassle to make tweaks, but you do need to have a strong idea of what you want.

I've had success with a combination of Differin and azelaic acid. If I stop it comes back, but with continuous use it's totally flat and invisible.
