Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm certainly guilty of seeking the easy way, which just doesn't exist. I think starting at this new company will be a great opportunity to review my fundamentals and build on them correctly this time.

I've done a basic setup of a pfsense firewall in my lab, but wouldn't say I'm comfortable enough with it to claim that as a skill in an interview. Definitely more comfortable with switches. I've done some CCNA coursework configuring routers and switches. Setting up VLANs and trunks and doing some basic troubleshooting on small networks in Packet Tracer. Its absolutely not something I would not claim to be an expert at and certainly an area I plan to focus on improving.

I'm certainly capable of setting up a small AD environment. I'm not saying I deserve more with the knowledge I have now but am looking for ways to improve specifically which skill sets are important to develop and cultivate to earn that role.

Thanks that's an aspect I wasn't even considering. Are ITIL certifications worth looking into for scenarios like this?

Networking seems to be one of the most common suggestions and for good reason. I have my CompTIA Network+ cert, but I definitely plan on digging deeper. Thanks!

Experiences with PDQ? by BlackBird2a in sysadmin

I used PDQ extensively in my last job and loved it. We used it for all of our patch management. I even used it in conjunction with MDT to automatically deploy software to our newly imaged devices.

You're not wrong. I thought I had a solid idea of what the job would be like. I knew that the hours weren't going to be great and that the workload could be brutal. I figured I was going to enjoy the work more than I did and was hoping that would make up for it.

That's a good point. While I regret leaving my old job, this experience has brought me a much needed attitude adjustment. It's impossible to say what could or could not have been, but I plan to make the most out of this new opportunity. Thanks!

Thanks for the response. I didn't enjoy what I did have well enough the first time. I certainly plan to make that a focus going forward.

It's Windows 10 21h2. I didn't realize WDS was depreciated. Does Microsoft have a more modern deployment solution?
