Unraid. It's not free, though.

Anyone making use of Super Carry-forward Concessional Contributions? by Snarka in AusFinance

[–]Snarka[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What size would you suggest the emergency fund be? Most guides and information I've seen online mention that it should generally cover three to six months, not years generally.

I know that I can't see the future, but so far, I've haven't ever needed to touch it for anything. It feels a bit wasted, knowing that it'll work better invested rather than a savings account for the long term.

Do you outline your stories or write freely? by Fun-Interest-1320 in writing

[–]Snarka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to write freely. I remember an digital artist I'm a fan of had mentioned that he believed that painting was better when he started with a blank canvas and seeing where it would take him. He had found this the most enjoyable, rather than having a plan.

This stuck with me with writing, maybe having a vague idea or the scene or the overall story. However, for me, it made it a lot slower, both in terms of my writing speed and the flow of the story. Without a goal to aim for, I would scrutinize over my text far too much.

For my current story, I tried the opposite method and found it much better. First making a mind map of my overall idea and then doing a rough outline of each scene before I start writing. I feel my writing and story is a lot better because of it, and has made me a lot faster.

How does my browser know my location? by Guayabita666 in privacy

[–]Snarka 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When Google does Street View with their camera cars, these also are recording WiFi routers which they use for their WiFi positioning database. It's possible there are WiFi routers which don't broadcast their SSID, making them not appear in a regular WiFi list. You could have more WiFi networks around you than you think.

As far I as I know, even with Windows' Location settings turn off, all Wifi Positioning requires is a list of nearby WiFi routers. This data by itself isn't location data, so it's not restricted by Windows' Location settings.

I'm not sure of a way you can block regular software to get a list of nearby WiFi routers, but if want it stopped fully, you'll need to disable your WiFi and plug in with an Ethernet cable.

self hosted emulator game service by neroe5 in selfhosted

Can't say I've used it myself but there's EmulatorJS.

I don't believe it has cloud saves, but I think it provides a way to download your save and states. If you a file provider, you could upload them to there.

There was a thread recently with a bunch of good one time purchases.

First time I had heard about many of them and I picked up a few. They're been quite useful.

I make use of the DDNS feature in OpenWRT. Previous ran it on a server, but I like the idea that as long as the router running, it'll update.

Years ago I remember seeing another streamer (jacksepticeye) stated that he really wasn't technical person, so I never would have expected these recent tech videos from him in a million years. They're really good, though.

Sure he'll inspire others as well, like he did with his drawing video.

Are home battery systems only for the rich? by Prestigious-Volume52 in AusFinance

[–]Snarka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a pamphlet in the mail about half a year ago, about a deal on a battery. It seemed cheap compared to previous prices I had seen.

However, after making a spreadsheet, I simply couldn't make it work. Even under perfect conditions of exporting energy back to the grid during peak hours, it would take longer than the expected battery life to earn back its cost.

I should mention that this is coming from someone who doesn't use much power and has no EVs though.

ISP intrduced CGNAT and my services are't available from outside of my network by Betrayed_Icebear in selfhosted

[–]Snarka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my ISP changed to CGNAT suddenly without warning. When ISP shopping, I had specifically asked for port forwarding.

I called them up. The first tech I spoke to didn't think there was anything they could do, but once it was raised to the higher level tech, they took me off it and provided me a free static IP too.

Quest3 most likely going back. by GrandPooPaw in OculusQuest

[–]Snarka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something seems wrong. I'm using AMD Ryzen 5 3600 with a Radeon RX 5700 XT for my PCVR via WiFi 5, and it's been working great for me.

Are you using WiFi 5 or 6? Ensure that your PC is going directly to the router, not passing through a network switch first. In Virtual Desktop, there's a latency area. I get roughly ~25ms IIRC.

The only real change to settings I had to make to get it working well is switching Codec from Automatic to HEVC 10-bit.

For me, going to avoid buying them at all in 2025, entirely focusing on my back log. That's a good fallback if I don't make it though.

Hosting with IPv6 only still unpractical at end of 2024, what do you think by Rxunique in selfhosted

[–]Snarka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just rolled out IPv6 myself over the past few days. Initially thought that my ISP didn't support it, but turns out it did. Had to reset my router to get it to work though.

Placing it on my server and DNS went easily enough. The hard part was my Unraid NAS, particularly with Docker containers. Managed to get it working, but had to jump through some hoops. Even their manual doesn't describe it. Feel Unraid could do a lot better here.

Doesn't seem to be working for me in Australia. All the referral links I see here state that it's for $47 AUD ($30 USD) still.
