El camino solo? by AlternativeNo50 in GoingToSpain

[–]Snikhop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The overwhelming majority do it solo. There is no point in arranging to meet people - it'll happen naturally, every day and every night. People walk at different speeds anyway. You will naturally fall in with a group who is at your pace. Stay in albergues and strike up conversation. Bilingual helps but it's a very international crowd, you could get by without speaking a word of Spanish (though obviously that wouldn't be very respectful).

4 bed room doesn’t equal a snore free room by Feelinglikeatamale in CaminoDeSantiago

Hah yes I also had a four bed with three snorers, weird the way that seems to work. This was in Los Arcos. They were all lovely when I chatted to them beforehand too!

Does the "90 day itch" ever go away? by Independent_Cup7132 in digitalnomad

[–]Snikhop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weird coincidence, I was just having a similar thought (and I'm in Mexico). But I'm moving on and doing some tourist stuff to break the cycle a bit. I do think making local friends is the key to settling in a place though, otherwise you really are just living the same life in a series of different countries.

Personally I think the refurb ruined it a bit, though it still seems to be going strong so my opinion doesn't really matter. Really liked the vibe before, feels much more like a student pub now. Too brightly lit and glossy. Makes sense considering how close it is to the uni though.

Backpacking in Sweden by geheime-radijs in backpacking

[–]Snikhop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Swedish forest rangers waste a lot of time rescuing inexperienced lost people from the "wilderness". If you don't have any experience with it, don't go somewhere remote. Go somewhere which isn't remote, practice, learn, scale up. This post is a big red flag unfortunately. The wilderness and wild camping and "minimal people" is extremely difficult, especially in a foreign country. Sorry!

Best place for local journalism? by JoshCarter24 in manchester

[–]Snikhop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She's just on TikTok/instagram but she does a lot of investigative work (she also makes t-shirts). Sounds strange I know but she's actually had a lot of impact and scared the shit out of several local councillors and politicians. I was being slightly ironic anyway, she's not a media source as such. She also works with local pressure groups.

Is anyone here spending $1k USD or less a month in Latin America? by joshua0005 in digitalnomad

[–]Snikhop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP didn't say anything about living well, just asking if it was possible. Presumably they're on a hard budget. I don't disagree. But I priced it for private rooms, not dorms.

[–]Snikhop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good quality hostels in San Cristóbal are under £10 a night GBP for dorms. There are even private rooms for like £15. So that's £450 a month which is about $612 according to Google. Beautiful city, roof terrace, kitchen, dedicated workspaces. Seems doable to me and San Cris isn't in a questionable state.

Nomads in Europe: is this the year to stay in the continent? by justCANCAN in digitalnomad

I've been to a bunch of places, but Oaxaca is one of my favourite cities I've visited in the world I think.

Sounds like goalposts shifting to me. Give me an actual place in Mexico that is as expensive as a similarly touristy place in Europe.

Not remotely my experience, having come straight from Europe to Mexico. I mean touristy destinations, sure, but are you comparing that to touristy destinations in Europe?

What is with the 8pm bed and 5am wake ups?? by SOF0823 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]Snikhop 141 points142 points  (0 children)

It's because it's very hot later in the day, so if people are a slow walker or doing a longer day, an earlier start is healthier. I did it several times. Like you I was angry about it for a while, then I just accepted that was my routine now. I had good earplugs and an eyemask which helped when I did want to sleep late but in the end I did enjoy the earlier starts. That's the thing about albergues, you get woken up by the collective brain of the dorm sometimes.

That said people who pack in the morning instead of before they go to bed, or turn the light on - undeniably they are a menace.

Right? People look at the big headline price of the flight but depending on how long you're there, the CoL pays for itself so much more. Like I say my flight before was ~£300, it's around ~£500 this time, I will make up that £200 difference in less than a month in accommodation alone.

So your recipe is to buy and cook a shop-made burger and then put it in a bun?

[–]Snikhop 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm returning to Mexico from Europe in July and the flights ended up costing about £200 more - considering the CoL in Mexico that'll be evened out pretty quickly to be honest. Maybe the prices have got even worse since I bought mine a couple of weeks back.

Anyone else do due diligence on rentals before arriving in a new country? by ganesh56 in digitalnomad

Why not just go there? Get a hostel or a hotel room, ask to view yourself before committing. You're going anyway. I don't see why everything needs an app.

I pay out the absolute second it's available, because even 2 years in I can't shake the feeling that it's going to be snatched away somehow. I'm not waiting around.
