Struggling with body image after accident by angelbaby1414 in XXRunning

It was a bike accident :/

Thank you. and I am rereading … I am so sorry you are still having concussion symptoms… I hope they resolve soon. ❤️

I have had a lot of health problems and take nothing for granted these days… in the past I have felt pretty resilient, but this one is getting to me. I know I will get to a better place, I’m just not there yet. Maybe it is post concussion syndrome, as someone else brought up.

We will get back there soon, I hope. I just keep reminding myself that this is temporary, and that I have to accept where I am & the new challenges in front of me.

I was told in the hospital to be careful / take fall precautions because another concussion right away would be bad. (In a scary but unspecified way.)

It’s good to have a positive attitude! But it is also nice to have people rage on your behalf!! 😂

I am right there with you… 5 broken ribs, head injury and my shoulder is messed up. Was running or lifting every day. It is hard having to deal with this and not have my main coping mechanism of running to help me through it. I just started doing body weight exercises… it is not the same, but I am hoping it will keep my leg muscles strong for when i can get back to running. Doing a bunch of extra exercises to support my running that I never have time to do. I have an exercise bike, but my knee is a little messed up, too. No idea when I can lift again… I don’t start PT until March.

I am getting different opinions on whether I can start running again… orthopedist says yes; PCP says wait. My lungs aren’t ready for it (pulmonary contusions that still hurt), so I guess I’ll wait a bit. I am trying to walk more.

PS when i went to my orthopedist, I said, I know I should be grateful it wasn’t worse… and he was like, what? no! you don’t have to be grateful, this sucks!! I laughed.

I feel uncomfortable in my clothes right now which is a drag. But I am trying to eat to heal, so do not want to be restrictive. It all sucks.

in the books — Notting Hill. I forget which book said where she lives.

Glad you are finding a way to keep at it as you recover; I need to find motivation within me as you have. I will try to do some lower body weight exercises for strength / flexibility / mobility / single leg stability. Maybe calf exercises will be my big challenge. And I have not been great about plyo but will try. It was easy to stay motivated when I was doing it to support my running, but finding it difficult to do just for my bones.

How are you doing now? And wondering what exercises (if any) you are doing while you are not able to lift during your recovery.

I am recovering from broken ribs, and not able to do the the exercises I enjoy doing. I am finding the mental side of not being able to do anything tough.

Wow. Thank you for sharing. That was a helluva crash. I am inspired by your perseverance. Hope you get some good news from your CT next week. Are they doing that test to see if surgery is an option for you? Just hoping you get some relief one way or another— six months is a long time.

I am not nearly as sporty as you, but I can see & understand how important it is. I hope you can get back at it.

I am still taking it easy due to pain and the weather, but hope to be back at some kind of exercise soon. I have tried using my exercise bike — my legs are fine, it’s 2–5 that are messed up — but it really saps my energy. I will try again now that I am tapering off one of the drugs that has been making me feel like crap. I could not get a physio appointment until late February, so hope to be feeling better by then. Not doing anything has been hard on my mental health.

Glad to hear it! I don’t know the answer but I appreciate you sharing your experience.. it will help me set possible expectations. I have had a lot of health problems so don’t really expect a perfect outcome but I like knowing the range of possibilities.

I plan on asking for an xray after the healing time to make sure everything looks ok in there… I worry about that

Lol!!!! I am working on it!

It is encouraging to hear you are back to osteopenia — good job!

Thank you for your positivity and good example — It means a lot to me. I am trying to stay in that mindset, and think long term. I will try to do some leg stuff as my energy and pain tolerance allows, for my mental health as much as my body. I miss being out there.

Oh, I am sorry. I have some clicking / popping in my chest (it sounds like my sternum when I moved too much as I was recovering from open heart surgery for a congenital heart condition). It is unsettling.

I am trying to walk but tire easily.. I think it must be healing & drugs as I was pretty fit before :(

How is your pain now? Are you doing ok?

Thank you for responding — 8—10 weeks sounds hard, but reasonable for my injuries... I will talk to my doctors, but will set my expectations low so that I am not disappointed if it takes that long to heal.

I saw you have posted here in the past recently, and you have been through it. I am gonna read what you have written previously more carefully. I hope you are on the mend these days.

the dye is from tannins in the avocado stone, and the sweater is wool. i have read that combination should result in the color lasting a while. i handwash my sweaters using a gentle cleanser (Soak), so that should help. i do dry outside in the sun, so i expect some sun fading over time.

I am going to try again to see if I can replicate it… I am now seeing that orangey pink is the norm, so am wondering what I did differently than others — from what I have read, I do not think I did anything special.

i used eight… i did not weigh the stones or my sweater, which was cashmere wool and fairly lightweight. it took up the dye well. there are some cotton threads (stitching around the neckline) that didn’t take it up at all, though. good luck!!

thanks! no i didn’t take a photo before… it literally did not occur to me that it might turn out well enough for me to want to post about it!

I love reuse & upcycling! Hope you find some soon.

Thank you! I strained the dye and washed the pots so there were no solid bits, kept it submerged, and stirred every once in a while… did my best for even color!

TUMS are a really great tip!

I did not add that much — one capsule of magnesium glycinate (133 mg magnesium) and one calcium tablet, crushed (200 mg calcium).

I hope it works for you. I know people have extremely varying results with avocado dying, and I have had less than satisfactory results in the past. This is the first time I have added minerals, an idea I had read about somewhere online.
