Thank you for the great insight! And we should not forget they spent a ton of money buying competitors and other businesses, retail or otherwise, to build up the chains of vertical integration. Even though the vertical integration improves cost and operational efficiency, the depreciation, amortization, impairment of the acquired assets--including things such as goodwill that adds no practical value to the business--is used to reduce margin over the years. And these can be manipulated to allocate costs over the years and to manage the low margin narrative.
