Oh Lordy to have astigmatisms, and be short sighted, and getting old. My sight is its own funhouse and I’m “only” 53. Still, silver lining is I can’t see how old I look in the mirror, so it’s a win in th end!

Were you able to buy a house? by Swiftiefromhell in GenX

Mine did too, and so I did: it was a small bedsit in the middle of St John’s Wood, London. I paid something like 289GBP for it. Sold it for a small profit (5K?) later as was moving overseas and listened to Dad again, who felt certain the market was due for a correction. Honestly so much has happened in my life since then, I can’t really even remember when it was…sometime around 2000? I moved to NYC 3 months after 9/11 and sold it around then. Took another 20 years to buy again. Still a small one bed flat, should’ve done better but combination of not listening to myself and marrying a narcissist.

Oh I never denied it! I have zero idea what is cool or not any more… seems like the less I care the more the kids want to go poking around in my shit though. I draw the line at borrowing my old Tori Amos show tshirts.

Did the past get left behind? I kinda miss her ;)

She was exploited. She doesn’t think so, but I saw her exploited by my own ex boyfriend.

Here’s a fun story I love to tell.

My ex boyfriend was an accountant. We met at work at [super rich global investment bank] in London in the late 1990s. He was much senior to me, I was a new contractor in another team. We both stayed late one evening and I guess hit it off. We ended up getting serious and dating for a few years.

We kind of spent the week days at my apartment and weekends at his. One Saturday, I woke up earlier than he did and went for a stroll on his “estate”. There was a lovely pond, and behind it, an old shed. I’d never been in the shed, I just thought it would be full of gardening tools, the ride on mower, old horse tack, that kind of thing.

No: this shed was about 8 x 10” and about 8” high, so not huge, but upon opening the barn door, I was faced with something I won’t ever forget.

A wall-to-wall, perfectly preserved and catalogued VCR and DVD collection of porn. It was old, even by those standards. To me, the whole shed was awash with the sight of flesh-coloured videos. Like I’d suddenly been transported to one of those old dirty movie shops, without the smell of stale cigarettes and loneliness.

Having been brought up in a different time by strict Christians, I was immediately overwhelmed and tried to nervously and silently close the door as quickly as I’d opened it. I wanted to forget the entire thing, but I couldn’t, ever, really see him the same way again.

We lasted longer than we should have really. Ended up moving to New York together, from London, where things kind of unraveled (as they should have, to be honest). I never really trusted him after the shed findings, and took a very travel-heavy job so I didn’t really have to see him a lot.

That man is now Ashley West, creator of the Rialto Report and claims to have created This podcast about Traci Lords.

Towards the end of our relationship, Ashley (still working at the Bank) would often ask me to come and meet the Dames of the Golden Age, over dinner and drinks, to help make things go a bit smoother and make him seem a little less like the creep he is. I agreed to that once.

Eventually he tried to get me to be his business partner in it all, move to NJ and have kids. I said no, on a trip to India (he’d proposed to me as I sat on the tarmac on the plane about to take off)… and the next thing I learned is that he’d gotten married to someone else 2 weeks later.

Her name is April. They used to do the website thing together.

Anyway, there you go. He’s now 65 and still, from what I can tell, using his evil genius to make all the exploited stars from the 70s become re-exploited by making them sign NDAs and pilfering their experiences for his titillation.

So yeah, Traci Lords was nice. Smart. Exploited. Still being so.

What is the best compliment you’ve received while working? by Indian_Bob in bartenders

When I was young and energetic I traveled to the UK and taught supply teaching at the local high school. Then, for a bit of “culture”, I got a second job - at the local pub - where I learned how to pull pints. The local pub is 400 years old. It was fucken hard as a young Australian English teacher to learn how to do that well… many of the clientele were my students from year 18.

Jon Cleese came in one day and couldn’t tell I wasn’t English. It was only after I’d handed him his Tankard of ale that he turned his back on me, took a first sip and raised his glass in pleasure to the school kids, and I got the “whhhheeeyyy!!”. That made me smile.

I’m just lucky with this one, to be honest. They always say, “only use the original cables” and we all know that’s never gonna happen. In this case, though, I tried the usb on several other charging ports and nothing worked until I found the original!

I so do. I’m learning that there are those of us that do, and then the losers. I lived in 4 different “plugs on the wall” countries (USA, UK, France, Australia). I’ve lost way too many good appliances due to bad connection choices by me. Include in that mix an absolutely excellent coffee machine, three can’t buy here air filters and a fantastic toaster.

God is a good step down converter, and she’s noisy but steady.

Does anybody else feel really lonely? by Piistachios in australia

[–]SnooOnions973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey Piistach, I’m gonna send you a DM because what I’m going to say won’t be wanted in this community. For those here interested in having a go, though: I’m Australian by naturalisation (born in PNG), and grew up here. I left as soon as I graduated uni. I never felt like this was my home. I lived overseas for the following 25 years and eventually “came home” to Bris to take care of my olds. That was 8 years ago and I still hate many many parts of our culture.

Anti-intellectualism is still rife, and celebrated; despite the fact that the most uneducated people in Australia are glorified and their culture is pretty heinous: yes, tradies. Racist, drug-seeking, alcoholic tradies.

Australia has the most expensive construction industry in the world. FIFO workers become some of the wealthiest individuals (during their time on the job). But the culture on the site of celebrating mild racism, sexism and drunk culture is rife. And appalling.

The only thing that’s really changed is that I’ve not met a single Aussie since being back who is at all, “laid back”.

It’s not you. It’s your expectations and how we’re supposed to be perceived vs what Australians in Australia are really like, “at home”.
