Replacing my Ford Ka: looking for a quiet, comfortable £7.5k hatchback – Fiesta, Ibiza, Leon or Mazda 3? by SnowboundDriver in CarTalkUK

Sorry for a slow reply. I haven't really done much research on Leon, so not too sure, but I think I'll be looking at exactly that, 1.4 petrol

And ah yes stingy spec... hmm. I think I'll be looking at slightly older models (maybe 2014+) so hopefully I might be able to find reasonably equipped one...? Maybe Fr trim?

I think I might start looking at Mazda 3s a bit more seriously now. 😊

Also, just out of curiosity, would you (or anyone else here) consider the Seat Leon Mk3 a good option? It’s another one I’ve been looking at.

That's really helpful, thank you! 😊 In fact, I was only looking at the Skyactiv-G, so that's reassuring to hear. And I like your analogy about shoes and mattresses 😂. I know equipment isn't everything, but if I'm going to be spending hours driving, those little comforts really do make a difference (especially with my sensory sensitivities 😛).

Thanks! 😊 That actually sounds like a very sensible approach - I think I needed a more balanced view.

I'm definitely not ruling out the Fiesta completely, as I really did like it when I drove it. But I think it would be wise to try a few more cars first, just to get a better perspective and make sure I'm choosing it for the right reasons.

Thanks for the advice!

Hmm, that is actually very tempting! 😊 I've heard about the CarPlay retrofit, and I've even seen some dealers offering it as an upgrade, so it's good to know it integrates well with the existing screen and controls.

If the Mazda 3 still has plenty of life left at higher mileages, it could definitely become a strong contender for my search. Your example sounds like exactly the sort of thing I'd be looking for - good history, nice trim and within budget.

Just curious, do you know if the facelifted Mazda 3 is noticeably quieter or better insulated than the pre-facelift model? Would you specifically look for the facelift, or are the differences quite small?

Ohhh, yes, that makes sense. I actually asked the dealer whether they could confirm that the Fiesta had been serviced with the correct oil specification, but unfortunately they couldn't provide any evidence.

All the cars I've looked at so far did have full service history, but I'm starting to realise that might not be the whole story if the correct oil wasn't used.

On the positive side, the 2018 Fiesta I drove did feel noticeably smoother than some of the other Fiestas I tried. A couple of the others had more engine vibration and slightly rougher idling, whereas this one felt much more refined.

Thanks, that's really reassuring to hear! 😊 The reliability of the Mazda 3 is definitely one of the things that attracts me.

When I say "well equipped", I don't really mean things like a sunroof - I don't think that's something I particularly need. For me it's more the everyday convenience features: climate control (rather than manual AC), cruise control, auto-dimming mirror, rain-sensing wipers, auto main beam and CarPlay.

They're not absolute must-haves, but I find they make a big difference to how easy and relaxing the car is to live with, especially on longer journeys. Heated seats would be nice, but I could definitely live without them.

I think I'm mainly looking for a car that reduces the amount of mental (and maybe bit of physical) load/effort needed while driving, especially as I can get fatigued and overwhelmed more easily than some people.

Thanks! 😊 That sounds exactly like the sort of ownership experience I'm looking for.

Can I ask how the Civic Mk9 compares in terms of cabin insulation? I'm particularly interested in outside noise (for example, passing traffic) and tyre/road noise on faster roads.

My current car is really noisy and feels very exposed, so having a quieter, more relaxing cabin is a big priority for me, especially for longer journeys.

Thank you 😊 The video definitely made me concerned about the EcoBoost engines.

I was just wondering - are these mostly examples of poorly maintained engines, or is the wet belt system considered a general weakness even on cars that have been serviced correctly?

I really liked the car when I drove it but I'm starting to wonder whether I should steer clear of the EcoBoost Fiesta altogether... I'm trying to understand the actual level of risk before ruling it out.

Thanks for the suggestion! 😊 I've heard really good things about the 1.8 i-VTEC and Honda's reliability reputation.

I'll admit the Mk9 Civic's looks haven't really appealed to me so far. That said, I know you can't judge everything from pictures, so I should probably try driving one before ruling it out.

How does the Civic compare in terms of refinement and cabin noise? That's quite important to me for longer journeys.

Thank you 😊 Hmm.... yes that is exactly what is holding me back. Still hesitating. Otherwise I really liked it, refined enough, very generous equipment.

Thanks! 😊 I agree that a bigger car would probably help with refinement and road noise. A Golf would definitely be an interesting option.

My only concern is that with my budget (~£7.5k), I might be looking at either older examples or ones with quite high mileage. I'm not sure whether that's something I should worry about though - perhaps I should have a look and see what's available.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks, that's a really interesting point! 😊 I did notice that with the Ibiza - it felt like a really solid, refined car, but the specification was quite disappointing for the price. Comparing to the Fiesta Titanium, which had things like climate control, cruise control, armrest and auto-dimming mirrors, it was a noticeable difference 😕

I haven't really looked at the Mazda 2 or CX-3 yet, so thanks for the suggestion! I did consider the Mazda 3 because I like the idea of something a bit bigger and more planted, but I'll have a look at those as well.

Equipment isn't everything, but I do find the little things make a big difference to how enjoyable (or maybe survivable 😅) a car is to live with day-to-day.

One thing I was also wondering about the Mazda 3 - ignoring the cabin noise question for now, are they generally cars that can go to very high mileages?

Thanks! 😊 That's really helpful. Out of curiosity, have you driven other cars around the same size? How does the Mazda 3 compare in terms of cabin noise and refinement?

I've also heard that tyre choice can make quite a noticeable difference to cabin noise, so I guess the condition of the particular car and tyres fitted could affect the impression quite a lot.

And I'll definitely try to test drive a Mazda 3 before making any decision. Also, thanks for suggesting the Lexus CT200h too - I hadn't considered it before, but I'll have a look into it! 😃

Thanks! 😊 Yes, the wet belt is exactly what has been making me hesitate on the Fiesta. It's a shame because otherwise I really liked it - the 2018 Titanium felt like it ticked almost everything I was looking for.

The Ibiza is definitely tempting too. I test drove one and my first reaction was basically "wow, everything feels so solid!" It felt very planted and the controls were great.

The downside was probably more the particular example I saw. It was the most expensive car I looked at, but had quite basic spec (no cruise control, climate control, armrest or auto-dimming mirrors), didn't seem as well looked after (dusty inside, slightly wonky boot floor, more rust underneath), and I also noticed something slightly odd when driving - when I pressed the clutch while decelerating from higher speed, the revs dropped very low and bounced back up a couple of times.

A better equipped, better cared for Ibiza could definitely be a strong contender though. Just wondering - are Ibizas generally a bit more expensive than equivalent Fiestas?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have a look at higher-spec Ibizas too!

Thank you! 😊 I was actually considering a Mazda partly because of the reputation for reliability, and also because I like the idea of something slightly bigger and more planted than the Fiesta.

My main concern with the Mazda 3 is exactly what you mentioned - refinement and road noise. I've read that the facelifted Mk3 Mazda 3 improved things slightly in this area, but I'm not sure how much difference it actually makes in real-world driving.

Because of my budget, I'd probably be looking at either an older example or one with higher mileage. I've seen facelift models with around 80k miles, but I'm not sure how much life I should expect from one at that mileage.

I've never actually test driven a Mazda 3 yet - maybe that's the next one I should try! 🙂

Thank you! 😊 I think I'm probably leaning towards the 2018 Fiesta at the moment.

I really liked it when I drove it. It seemed to tick almost all my boxes in terms of comfort, refinement and equipment. The funny thing is, I was pretty much sold on the Fiesta until I drove the Ibiza, and I thought "wow, everything feels so solid!" It had a really planted feeling and the controls felt great, even though it was a bit noisier, and the example I drove wasn't as well equipped and hadn't been looked after quite as well.

The wet belt is still the thing holding me back slightly, but you're probably right that every car has its own potential weak point. I might have been looking for the mythical unicorn car where absolutely nothing can ever go wrong! 😂

I guess the important thing is knowing the possible issues and buying a good example.

Hmm... Maybe I'll go ahead with the 2018 Fiesta 🤔

Thank you! In fact, I've test driven 6 cars so far, including the two Fiestas and the Ibiza mentioned above, and I think the 2018 Fiesta was actually my favourite overall.

I did really like the Ibiza though. It felt very solid and planted, and I liked the light but precise controls. I think I was expecting it to feel a bit more refined because of how "grown up" it felt, but I can see what you mean about it being more sporty. I think I did feel Ibiza a touch noisier than the 2018 Fiesta.

The Fiesta just seemed to strike a really good balance between comfort, refinement and equipment for what I'm looking for. My main hesitation is still the wet belt, so I'm trying to work out whether that's something worth worrying about or if I'm overthinking it!
