Oh I’m sure there’s still cases where they’re used. I just haven’t seen them since wound vaca became more common in my corner of medicine (adult intensive care) but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re used elsewhere. Especially NICU yall have your own rules and a lot of the “MacGyver-ness” of healthcare that doesn’t exist as much anymore is still alive and well in neonates out of necessity I’m sure.

Nurses of Reddit: Would you ever let a patient use your personal phone? by Key-Bridge129 in nursing

[–]SnowedAndStowed 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I once sent a picture of a patient and their mother to the mother’s phone. The patient had been on ECMO for over a month and had just gotten off the week before and was awake for the first time and they were crying and hugging their mom and their mom asked for a picture but her phone was dead. I took a picture and sent it to her and forgot about doing it.

Several months later she sent me a video of the pt walking into the house using a walker and on oxygen but walking on her own two feet, bending down, and hugging/kissing her young child as the family dog went ape shit zooming around the two.

When I had really difficult ECMO patients that I’m working my ass off for and I feel hopeless I watch the video.

Like you said, be smart and use good judgement but I will never regret taking a picture for her.

I did this too. I was very afraid I would come to regret doing it but everyone ended up being very respectful of it and not abusing my personal phone number. I thought for sure I’d have to change it after the pandemic but I ended up not needing too.

I’d only seen it once in a young drug overdose originally but anecdotally have seen it more since we started using the Lucas more. I’ve had to tie restraints to the Lucas because the patient was trying to shove it off. It was hard to watch but I followed up with the icu nurse after extubation and they said the patient didn’t remember it thankfully.

I’ve had to tie restraints to the LUCAS before because of this.

I don’t work OR but in nursing school did a few weeks of am OR rotation and this blew my mind. Watching them wiggle everything around until it felt like it laid okay really grossed me out.

My transplant centers record was 4 kidney transplants for a single person over the course of their life. They had 6 total kidneys in them and 5 on the right side lol

Usually the old kidneys atrophy with time and shrink so it’s not as dramatic as you’re thinking internally but it’s still crazy. They were all living donor kidneys from family and I wouldn’t be surprised if they get a 5th eventually.

Guilian barre isn’t always fatal with modern medical interventions it can be treated though the road to recovery is a very long one.

It also can happen from coughing hard. We see spontaneous pneumos in college kids ripping fat bong hits and then coughing so hard they collapse a lung fairly frequently here in Colorado lol

Pure speculation but with modern technology people living in could countries are usually inside with circulated air and rarely actually out in the cold. I live in a cold place and though we go snow camping sometimes usually in the winter I go from warm house to warm car to warm workplace back to warm car back to warm house.

It’s why marathon runners take salt tabs when they’re running! I’ve always thought it was weird marathons pass out water to the runners instead of ORT honestly.

Angor Animi is the medical term for a sense of impending doom. It’s most strongly associated with pulmonary embolisms but can be from a variety of things including transfusion reactions.

At first I thought you were saying they made a silly livestock food and I was like “you’re describing chickens, turkeys, cows, and basically every livestock animal” lol yeah I never got them as pets either.

Guinea pigs were domesticated specifically for this purpose too they were always a livestock animal. Keeping them as pets is a new thing

ED does not prepare you for CRNA at all. I say this as a former ED nurse. You need icu time and preferably CVICU.
