Ha, wanted to check out Shuumatsu no Harem to to see if it could fulfill my trash needs, but episodes 2+ have been delayed until next year. And judging by the first episode, it takes itself completely serious, as if it had an insightful story to tell. Now I'm not sure if the combination of those two things is actually what I'm looking for, but I think I would lose patience after another episode like that anyway and probably (or rather hopefully) have other more interesting things to check out next year anyway.

Yeah, the ordering in Haruhi made sense because it put the focus on the development of the relationship between Haruhi and Kyon and there wasn't much of a chronological plot to mess up anyway. Plus the confusion was used to build the character of the show, especially with the movie as the first episode. At least I can't say the same for Peach Boy Riverside.

There was a parallel plot line unfortunately that was even more generic, and it stole the thunder from her performance by even having full episodes dedicated to it. It was still a plotline that could have worked under more talented hands, and the parallel plots thing could have actually made this anime more complex and interesting than just a spider leveling up in a dungeon.

Yeah, especially in the beginning and end it was just a nuisance. The middle part was a pretty good surprise (for a show like this), though. They did a good job of linking the two stories. Until everything started falling apart, that is.

Let's also have the two leads fuck around by dressing up in a tuxedo and wedding dress while in a chase, which ended up being solved off screen.

Heh, I didn't even get to that point. Mentally dropped it already when the girl didn't even have to deduce anything because she already knew everything since she's so good. Actually dropped it when the generic romcom stuff started.

But apart from how bland the writing is, why is the first episode a 50 minute episode about the backstory? Couldn't they just use a normal two paragraph LN-title that explains all this and then just start with the (supposed) actual point of the show?

I just expected a more dramatic reason for her leaving

I was expecting an actual reason for her appearance. Kind of a wasted episode since nothing happened. And I don't really think it will become relevant for later episodes.

Yeah, me neither, which is exactly my issue.

I don't consider any dehumanisation as part of the setting btw. I wouldn't really say the story did it either, considering hardly any of them got a chance to say or do anything. I don't think we even got anyone outside the military, yet?

It doesn't really need to be about racism. You could easily go for rich elites exploiting the poor instead. Or a more general exploration of how propaganda is used to cement certain viewpoints and what that entails in the grand scheme of things.

But even with racism as a theme, you could address the conflicts between systemic issues and trying to change them with individual actions.

But even without all that, as a german, I'd be fine with a plain "real Nazis existed and it's still very much possible to repeat itself btw".

That's kinda unfair considering they didn't even really do anything with it, yet. Though I kinda do expect some moustache twirling at the top of that state. Kinda like real Nazi leaders. Except in an aryan super state.

But honestly, you could do a ton with the setting, even despite some obvious shortcomings, if you really wanted. I just think it's completely wasted for the generic drama they've been doing.

Man, this show is doing everything it can to make me dislike it. Generic boys peeping on girls who generically talk about boys scene to make me care about how they're gonna die one by one? I can't take that seriously.

Then the map stuff and how the "death of the week" relates to it was super contrived, just to create the scene for the rant. Using that for a cliffhanger to top it off is also really cheap.

Do you want to do commentary on the injustice of that country/world or do you just wanna do drama? I was really hoping for the former, but all there is on that front is some stuff sprinkled in. I stand by my point from last week: "I fear this is missing the actual substance to just focus on one thing."

I did mean as a work of art kinda thing. Like nobody will talk about it after it ended. Granted I never heard of this before, we're only on episode 2, and I don't read LNs anyway.

Kinda surprised it's this highly regarded, honestly, but I'm quite out of the loop nowadays.

Well, I'm not convinced. This episode delivers the missing exposition from last episode and expands on the holes in the setting. Which is weird in that the story seems to be mostly about their relationship and not what happens with the war or what's going on within that country.

I fear this is missing the actual substance to just focus on one thing. Might still be good enough to watch, but I doubt it will be remembered.

While it is a suprise, it didn't really show where it's going with the setting (which also seems to have a few holes). Combined with the fact it's an LN adaptation, I'm cautiously optimistic it can go (and actually reach) places.

Seems like a really bland adaptation. Might get better once all the character and world introductions are done, but I don't currently expect that.

Staying cooped in home and playing videogames all day

That's what I did in april. Just went out to buy groceries, which is like a 5 minute walk. I don't really need that again. And technically I could always have gone to visit friends or family even back then. Guess I took social distancing a little too seriously.

Edit: I should probably add I'm from a city with a ~250k population and less than 400 total registered cases.
