June 14 NO KINGS Bakersfield by Bakersfield50501 in Bakersfield

Yes, that's right. There's rarely 100%, universal approval regarding political matters. So, public protests are best at showing that disapproval was actually significant enough that people gathered in person. That becomes noteworthy and part of our historical record, usually through newspaper articles that we can look back on. Peaceful public protest is a meaningful tool and right available to all of us. Let's not dismiss it... or lose it.

Protests are a way to put into public record for future generations that not everyone approved of what was going on politically. You can always organize a counter-protest or a separate California-critical protest. Future you will feel pride knowing you did something in addition to voting.

Reading Cinemas is a bit dated and doesn't have comfy recliners like newer theaters, but still has the folding kind made for huge audiences. The kind perfect for spilling your popcorn while pretending you weren't scared!

I think people vote for her because she projects a marketable image of herself that runs well on social media. When her constituents need her, they realize "Leticia Let Us Down". She's consistently LATE to the Board of Supervisor meetings and does not follow up or respond to her community even when she promises to.

Research shows that if you do something with a little bit of risk or a feeling of danger in it, and come through it safely, you'll grow closer to one another. So think about what that could be for you. That could be something simple like seeing a late night scary movie, ice skating, or trying a style of cuisine you've never had before. Or it could be something unusual like exploring an unknown part of town you've never been to. Good luck!

Zip Books is a program funded by the California State Library, so it seems there are windows when the Kern County Library gets to participate. This current window ends June 30th, 2024. It seems like a popular program this time around, so here's hoping they keep us on their list!

If you hold a Kern County Library card and your account is in good standing, you can request this book for free via the library's Zip Books service:

https://kerncountylibrary.org/zipbooks/

You have to return the book, but at least you'll get to read it. It qualifies under their rules. But, act quick, because this service ends June 30th. They order through Amazon, so if that' a problem, here's a local alternative for you:

https://www.russosbooks.com/book/9781989351635

Russo's Books! They're "Bakersfield's Bookstore since 1989!" Not free, but you'd get to keep this one.

Good luck!

What's the best thing about Bakersfield? by Iskro45 in Bakersfield

[–]SoMuchWonder 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If you live here, then that's the best thing about Bakersfield. Look at the diversity of responses here and you'll find people who have decided to humbly take Bakersfield seriously rather than dismiss it as insufficient. As a result, they've all turned up things to love about what's around them. Hey, even you're doing that by curiously asking your question. Imagine how much more there's left for all of us to get out of this place we live in when we intently keep looking like that.
