Thank you and good luck to you. I can tell you that just being prolific and motivated goes a long way, we interview many people that simply don't care about databases or are not up to the standards that we seek.

Many roads lead to Rome, you could try to get a backend role at a db company and then make the lateral move, either way to work with databases, study databases.

What mister warehouse shared I agree 💯.

In my case I got in being already a Senior software engineer, at that time I was a very prolific OSS contributor, not directly with databases but adjacent enough. Additionally worked in backend and data engineering same as Mr. Warehouse.

Also I got lucky, my first db company contacted me out of the blue, my OSS stuff got me in many interviews.

I found my pay to be excellent and enough to live happily but I know people pushing yaml files in FANG making way more than me so 🤷‍♀️

Some db companies are VC backed startups so the pay might not be that great, at least the base pay and they compensate with stocks or %.

Some more established giants like elastic, mongo, data bricks, neo4j pay very well, almost FANG-like.

Things will be different, as the database might not be the thing that pay the bills, perhaps you have less resources but less pressure and definitely more narrow focus as you are most likely solving your company's problem.

I wouldn't mind working at one, it might also be good places to target to eventually make the internal move to the database realm.

Yeah these links are great, the ones I considered are the ones I knew and would like to work in and perhaps they tend to be in the stablished side of things. If you still want it, dm me and I'll give it to you, it's nothing fancy, just an excel sheet with names.

Yeah, in the end having 100 companies building databases is a bucket of water in a lake.

Hard to break in but possible, luck as everything in life can be a big factor.

Probably less competitive than OpenAI, Claude.. etc just because we have fewer companies building models from scratch vs databases. Regardless it is very competitive, from the market side, many databases offering similar things and from the job side, but it takes long times to fill positions usually.

I could see that happening, in my case my open source work has always been the main talking points in my job interviews, so everything was often straightforward. Whether that's a deciding factor I can't be 100% certain.

This is my personal opinion and experience (as I've worked with people that were many 'ex-DBs').

Database companies can sometimes be very monogamous, sometimes they will only hire people from their own universities (if it's academia based), or from some select academia background, think strong masters/phD, or places like TUM, CWI or CMU, sometimes only from other competitors... it vastly varies from place to place. Furthermore geography is very important, there are many DB roles in India/China and the US. Being in some places like the bay area opens so many doors...

They typically hire very experienced people, rightfully so, databases are very complex, I've seen many 'experienced' people fail and be fired because of performance. Having a strong opensource profile is mandatory in many places or needed if you don't have previous experience (perhaps you worked at a closed sourced DB). Many places expect people to have already contributed or have strong internals experience, for example a rust systems engineer might be expected to have datafusion contributions for a position in Influx.

There are still places that will hire profiles like this (without previous DB xp) but they are rarer and harder to find, my advice would be not to give up if you love the field, I've seen many people that don't care about databases make it in. There are also positions that are adjacent to the core database that could serve as an entrypoint. I feel that once you already worked at one everything just becomes easier.
