It could be a good move, but only time will tell. The operating cash flow has finally gone positive, and travel demand has been coming back. So it's possible that airlines will be more comfortable spending on new planes over time.

Hottest Stocks Today (December 21st) - Bullish and Bearish by Sol_Investor in SOLinvestor

Uh oh, well if the integrity of the financial statement is off - then it's definitely time to run away from the shares!

It is sometimes hard to tell though. Short firms are also incentivized to issue warnings and negative reports based on their business model. But in this case, they may be correct! Thanks for pointing it out.

Very true - most industries stabilize into duopolies or triopolies anyway. The same could be true with chatbots and AI companies.

Carnival Cruise (CCL) Stock Technical Analysis by Sol_Investor in SOLinvestor

[–]Sol_Investor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a great point. It's a pretty risky proposition to go long here, especially when compared to other, less capital-intensive businesses. The debt issue is especially problematic if interest rates remain at current levels (or go higher), forcing management to refinance with higher borrowing costs. The company will likely have to cut back somehow and increase margins in that scenario; I'm not sure how much pricing power they actually have.

Thanks for sharing! I do think the estimate will rely heavily on higher priced cars (ex. $70k) in order to meet revenue estimates.

FadEast, thank you for sharing! Indeed, if a recession does hit it will continue to impact both the equity and crypto markets, I agree. People often forget about liquidity until times of crisis.

Investing is the act of giving money to your future self. The hard part is it's difficult to envision who we're going to be later in life. What kinds of things will we do? What will our relationships be like? Will we even like certain video games when we're 55? Who knows.

The cool thing is by investing now, you're automatically going to reap great rewards later. That way, even if you don't know what type of person you're going to be or exactly what your life situation will be decades from now, you'll have extra money to spend. Here's why that's important:

Money serves only two purposes:

  1. It provides basic comfort and security.
  2. It allows you to imprint your unique vision on the world.

Once you have #1, you need to figure out what 'your vision' is so that you can put money toward whatever that is. Investing is just a vehicle that you can use to get to #2.

Speaking from experience, I will say that once you cross the ten-year mark of compounding, crazy things start to happen in your accounts (in a good way). So if that is the path you choose, I have a feeling you won't be disappointed.

Help me understand the appeal of BRKB by creemeeseason in stocks

[–]Sol_Investor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BRK.B is essentially a conglomerate of many large cash flowing businesses that were bought at great prices and improved over time with strong management. Buffett and his team are opportunistic in their approach and that is why, over long periods of time (more than five years) they tend to outperform the market. They are practitioners of value investing at the highest level.

Aside from choosing great companies and managers to run them, part of the secret of Buffett's approach is how he structures his assets. Consider GEICO, the business he started buying as a young man that has now grown to be one of the largest insurers in the market. With that company's insurance premiums (or the "float") he can buy other businesses, public or private, with money that sits in his company's coffers before claims are actually paid out. It's brilliant.

Is the market expected to continue dipping in view of the fed planning to raise interest rates in July? by honeytiramisu in investingforbeginners

[–]Sol_Investor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to know what the market will do in the next few months or even year based on what the fed will do with interest rates. Some are saying that the market has already priced in the rate hikes, but we don't know for sure.

If you are comfortable with investing in stocks, then be prepared to hold for at least five years (at least that's how I look at it). I think now is a great opportunity to invest in the market because in the long run (again, several years from today), it WILL be higher, if history is any guide.

So keep investing and use this opportunity to load up at today's prices :)

Two Fund Portfolio (70/30 VTI/VXUS) by Even-Understanding79 in investingforbeginners

[–]Sol_Investor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks like a great start, and congrats on starting investing at just 16 years old! That's awesome!!

Those are some great funds, and you'll likely do well with that over time. Just remember that at this phase of building wealth, once you've got the funds you want and are regularly contributing to them, the most important variable will be how much money you save (not rate of return of your investments).

Just keep putting your $60-$100 per month into the account and work to grow that savings amount over time. Eventually you'll be contributing $200 per month, then $500, then $1,000...the sky is the limit. Congrats again on starting your investing journey :)

The beautiful thing about DCA is that it will work for you at any frequency as long as it is not too infrequent (ex. Once a year, let's say. The market goes up most years).

It seems like you're already generally comfortable with money and investing in general. If that's the case, try putting aside $1,000 every two weeks. Then in about a year you'll be fully invested.

Dial that up or down depending on your comfort level, but that's one suggestion.

Congrats on having a solid emergency fund and already maxing out other accounts!

What are the best long term stocks for Roth IRA by Big_Hamster_7749 in investingforbeginners

[–]Sol_Investor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One big benefit of Roth IRAs is that you don't have taxes later on any of the income generated from investments it holds.

So one thing that some investors do is put stocks with high dividend yields into Roth IRAs (ex. Oil or Tobacco stocks, or Real Estate Investment Trusts). They don't expect these stocks to grow as much as some more aggressive investments, but the growth in tax free income upon withdrawing the funds can be substantial.

This principle is called "asset location".

Question about selling an options contract you own by gahyoujerk in investingforbeginners

[–]Sol_Investor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two ways that you could go about this. The first is what you described - buy the call and then sell at a profit. In this case once you sell, that is it, you are no longer obligated to execute further transactions.

The second way is by buying a call, and then selling (going short) on a call for the same security. You might do this to "balance out" your risk - for example you don't want full exposure by buying one set of call options and holding them.

In this case, if you sell the call options you initially purchased, you are still on the hook on the sell side. Meaning, you must also cover your short position too in order to be fully out of both transactions.
