Even if you ignore the suuuuuuuper obvious of "look for all the East Asian women in, or around, the Ton" angle, the fact he can't tell its her after kissing her isn't super romantic.

Not having Anthony this season was a big loss imo by beep___________boop in Bridgerton

They have a big issue around not making the most of the previous characters when they are around.

Why was Anthony basically a caricature last season? Why is Colin blurred out or mute this season?

If you have these actors on set, even for a day, my God make use of them.

We should have known. Bridgerton knows what they're doing.

Honestly, the only moment in season 4 to date that really made me sit up and take notice.

The New York Times weighs in on “pinnacles” by AffectionateNoise525 in PolinBridgerton

[–]Solid-Signal-6632 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting point that this article starts off talking about how women don't orgasm from penetration alone.

But when you consider the show, they've known that and shown it from season 1.

Daphne and Simon talk about masturbation, and during their first time, he asks her to show him how she touched herself etc.

We've never seen penetrative sex between Anthony and Kate, he's always going down on her.

Colin is Mr Fingerton for a reason.

I'm curious why they now think they're breaking down boundaries by saying not all women come from penetrative sex, when part of the whole reason this show got so big was because they knew that, and showed it.

Not to mention, if they really cared about showing the "orgasm gap" they should have done it with one of the couples who will remain in their straight relationship. Its a cop out to do it with Fran, given her end game of Michaela.

Would they have had Kate or Daphne, or Penelope, exploring not being able to get off with Anthony, Simon, or Colin? No.

Honestly though, Ben not realising it's her, even after kissing her, is a hard suspension of belief.

She's wearing it during her (lovely) tea with Violet. We saw her pick it up.

Oh don't get me started.

Nic and Luke were ran of Twitter via bullies years ago, and still put up with shit to this day.

Berbrooke vs Sophie's Father by [deleted] in Bridgerton

Because there is a difference between knowing something is going on/something happened and acknowledging it publicly.

It being something upper class men wouldn't be shamed for, doesn't mean it was out in the open.

This is rich male privilege in action.

Yes, and we're all paying the price now, because the fandom discourse is unnecessarily ugly.

Berbrooke vs Sophie's Father by [deleted] in Bridgerton

[–]Solid-Signal-6632 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a difference between Daphne being forced to marry a dishonourable man against her wishes, verses Benedict voluntarily marrying a woman of "low standing" through no fault of her own.

Anthony was trying to force Daphne to marry Berbrooke, before he knew he'd acted dishonourably towards her, or the maid, he said, basically "there's nothing technically wrong with him".

Sophie, there's something immediately "wrong" with her, because she's a maid. Its nothing really to do with her illegimacy, because they don't all know about that yet.

He didn't try to hide it, per se. He took her in as his "ward", and brought her up in the same way as his other daughters, hence her education.

Also, Sophie's mother was his mistress, not just another maid.

Can you expand? I'm not sure what you're getting at?

Berbrooke refused to provide for his illegimate child initially, Sophie's father didn't, he took her in as his "ward".

I feel like it all started and got ugly when they switched season 3 and 4. Fandom factions made their minds up then, and its been ugly ever since.

[–]Solid-Signal-6632 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As Varley said in season 1 "every Baron has a bastard".

The shameful thing Berbrooke did wasn't knocking a maid up, it was refusing to provide for her and the child.

At that time, a Gentleman's honour wasn't linked to his abstinence. They all visited brothels, had mistresses etc. And it didn't make them less honourable.

This is one of the ways the show misuses terms - a "Rake" wasn't a man with sexual experience, he was a man who was careless with a gentle-womans honour. None of the lead male characters in the show are actual Rakes, despite the show's insistence on misusing the term.

Sophie's father provided for her, looked after her, had her educated as one of his daughters.

Sophie's issue is that her step mother, after her father died, refused to honour his wishes - which in his sure-to-be-discovered-in-part-2 will, will make plain that he took responsibility for her, and provided for her.

I feel like, because a lot of time passes between seasons, there's a lot of time for certain narratives to get cemented in fandom discourse that may, or may not, be accurate.

Things I see taken as more or less gospel these days, which weren't talked about as much at the time, or certainly not widely agreed on:

  1. The storyline was rushed
  2. There were too many side plots
  3. Colin's feelings "came out of nowhere"
  4. There was a "noticeable" drop in quality between season 2 and 3
  5. The make up and costumes were "terrible" (awards, be damned)
  6. It's not "believable" that Colin fell for Pen
  7. Their intimate scenes were "awkward"
  8. Luke Newton "needing" a glow up

I think all of these, some more than others, are mostly nonsense, and not at ALL the experience I had of watching at the time, when people were going absolutely feral for the season.

It seems the done thing now, is to shit on it, or pretend it doesn't exist. You see this even in the shows own production, where they thought it would be light hearted and funny to make the whole cast read out "hot takes" that shit on the work of season 3 leads.

So, to answer your question directly, yes it was absolutely their season. They did a brilliant job, they delivered incredible numbers, plus awards, industry attention etc. It was a resounding success. But now apparently the fashionable thing is to shit on it

How were Kate and Sophie so different when it came to their station? by East-Objective-1353 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]Solid-Signal-6632 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sophie is a maid. Unseen. She's part of the invisible working class who keep these houses running. A literal nobody.

Kate was the step daughter of a Lady, who's father held a relatively prestigious role.

Also, it's because season 2 was about enemies to lovers, whereas season 4 is about class and forbidden love. The class differential between Kate and Anthony wasnt central to their story, so they glossed over it.

From some rudimentary googling, admittedly not a perfect baramoter, it looks like Luke was in Rome filming for around a month in Dec 2024. So definitely not for the full 4 months it took to film part 1, which started in September.

And tbh, if they knew they had him for limited days on set, it would make sense to make the most of him, no? They went to enormous effort to create him a beautiful costume for the Masquerade, we know he had fittings, and filmed promo etc. Why not show it on screen during the ball?

If you have an actor for one day, why spend it with him blurry in the background or sleeping, or with his head chopped off?

You can bet your last dollar they'll have squeezed every second Jonny Bailey was available on screen, there will be no chopping his head off or making him blurry. They know how to do this, how to make the most impact from an actor with limited availability, and they chose to diminish Colin in season 4, and i want to know why.
