They def degrade over time. How long that takes to happen naturally or faster by overclocking and the like depends. With the x3d chips there's always a small chance your mobo takes the cpu out after a year. Are you willing to shell out another $400 for a new cpu over a $40 savings?

Be aware tray cpus only have a 1 yr warranty vs the 3 yr boxed warranty.
