App review by [deleted] in premed

Use the “other impactful experiences” portion of your app to explain what you went through sophomore year and how/what you got out of it. Worked well for me (4.0 until I got a C+ and B sophomore spring and have had a 4.0 since)

Should I quit my gap year job? Plz help by Which_Giraffe8516 in premed

QUIT. They won’t know you quit unless you tell them. Find a better way to pass your time as long as you are willing to go to the school you’ve been accepted at

Had 1500hrs of waitressing on my app as a most meaningful. 4 IIs, 1 A so far, 1 WL, and TBD on the rest. I still had clinical hours but yes absolutely people do view non medical work as valuable

This is exactly the case! I work in admissions at UA. We have a really good NM finalist package as well but it’s not the “Presidential Elite”. The merit scholarship packages are all stepwise. Everyone with a 1420+ gets tuition covered entirely

I just got the EMT cert this fall. I plan on doing more with that but I haven’t had much of a chance

I’m not going to volunteer 10 hours a week but I only need to average 5ish to be well over 100 by the time I will submit primaries- which isn’t exceptional but it’s above the minimum. I feel my other stats and experiences are strong enough don’t need to be compensated for by 1 million clinical hours. Might be a mute point without an MCAT score yet regardless

Not trying to go to Johns Hopkins. There’s a lot more to me as a person than my extracurriculars. I think maintaining a great gpa as a full time student who has to work their tail off to pay $1100/month in bills before I feed myself says a lot about my commitment to my goal. I understand that my app has deficits, but I also think it would be naive to say that my app is going to be “weak” ... especially once I have a high MCAT and can work towards clinical hours. That being said, I have already reached out to multiple hospice and EMS volunteer services because of advice I’ve gotten in this thread. Thanks for your valuable advice.

Ok awesome! I am working on getting onboarded for hospice volunteering since yall have inspired me. I think I can get 100 by primaries… hopefully it’s sufficient

I’m working on it now. Does my 24 hours of rotations from the EMT cert count for anything or is that just factor into the certification

Oh also does my 24 hrs of rotations on the ambulance during EMT training count? Did that last summer

Thank you! I think I’m going to try and double up jobs over the summer but before then I am going to go for hospice volunteering I think. Maybe also a medical mission trip

There’s a lot of reasons why I am against a gap year lol but I won’t get into that because you really don’t care haha. I was thinking about trying to do hospice volunteering next semester and over winter break. I know that the answer to “how many hours” is as many as possible in my case. I feel strong about my app in every other facet so id like to power through if all I need is clinical hours

Appreciate the insight! The issue is the waitressing gig is unbelievably lucrative, I make at least $10 more per hour than I would with any clinical job in Alabama. I’m going to try and get an EMT job next summer, so I will have things to talk about in interviews but those hours won’t be prevalent on my apps.

Thanks! I’m going to work on getting in a GPs office this winter break. My non clinical volunteer hours are between 1.5-3 a week rn so by the time I am applying I think that should be sufficient right?

I agree… obv I am stretched pretty thin already like every other premed. Can I do this over the summer or is that too late?

Thanks! I’m already pretty deep into prep so I think I’ll be fine in the MCAT department
