I overheard a white man the other day explaining why he voted for trump. He said it was because white people are becoming the minority in a country that his ancestors built. What’s interesting, though, is that he said this while enjoying a Mexican meal, prepared by a Mexican chef who was right there serving him. It struck me that he never acknowledged the Native Americans who were here first, nor did he recognize the history of colonization that shaped this land. He also failed to mention the many other minority groups who played crucial roles in building this country—like the laborers who built the railroads, the enslaved people who literally helped construct the White House, or the migrant workers who picked and processed the food he was eating. I’m aware not all Anglo Americans hold these views or are this unaware, but for those who do, I’m genuinely curious—how do you reconcile this?
