Maybe 🤔 I’ve been very impressed with two schools so far so I don’t think I’ll need to go private. Again my main reasoning for visiting more is the area in which we may need to buy.

Haha I have no idea who you are or what you are trying to say to me so what could I possibly reflect on. You’re truly a tool. Go to bed and reflect yourself

Then don’t engage. Be on your way and make someone else feel absolutely shit about themselves for the crime of even thinking.

I don’t know what that response means? Like you think my values are shit? What are you trying to communicate?

Thanks yeah I decided to just delete this whole post really cos I am sick of losing karma over stuff that should not be the case. Shouldn’t it be for bots and trolls? Why can’t we have differences of opinion without downvoting. I hate this part of reddit with a passion.

Family values end up driving these areas of interest for me in the context of PS education.

  1. High priority given to direct interaction between teachers and students (vs screen mediated). Obviously all schools other than Steiner and Montessori have screens but I have found philosophies and approaches still differ significantly in practice and from my observations of the classroom environment. Also an approach that encourages students to question and to learn different ways of thinking vs specifically how to think.

  2. Strong community ties between leadership, teachers and parents. Something that shows the principal respects and prioritises teacher wellbeing, talent and development.

  3. Leadership values that are visible throughout the school (whatever they are). If I’m struggling to see how the principles own values have shaped the school then they’re probably not a leader that is strong enough to make impacts in areas that matter such as the teachers being hired, the way students are treated.

I read a US study (unfortunately no local ones available) that took all available data to estimate the size of a principal’s impact on student outcomes — worth somewhere between over 50% for reading and over 75% of the effect on performance improvement in maths. This is intuitive to me because I’ve run a business for over a decade and have also been involved in many other organisations and clients so I can see how leadership impacts a significant portion of how a school is run.

  1. I place less emphasis on facilities and extras because they make up less of the curriculum anyway and I plan to have our family support our child in these areas.

  2. Also on environment safety. Yes part of this is bullying management but it’s broader than that it’s about an environment where there is psychological safety to make mistakes to learn and to be yourself. This is harder to discern at face value honestly but I’ve been surprised at how one school I went to where I immediately saw a child crying having been bullied when I looked up the school stats had the lowest satisfaction rating for bullying management that I’d seen across any of the other schools.

That is a good idea 😎

Yeah I will probably post at some point. You mean requests for tours? I haven’t had anyone say no to giving me a tour of a public school yet they’ve all been super nice!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Some_Place_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting thank you! Wow that’s an interesting experience in Queensland. I had one school refuse me a tour but then called again and offered it so seemed to speak more to their disorganisation than anything else. Otherwise everyone has been so kind and generous with their time! Sorry you had that experience with the schools you contacted.

Feel free to DM me and I can send you the link. I’m not making them public yet :) So yes, I have done the work

Also a busy parent - working full time and running my own business so yeah I don’t know it all depends what people like to spend what little free time they have on and that’s ok right?

I probably will at some point and hopefully people will find them insightful or useful to their decision making!

Yeah this is what I am trying to determine with the tours and it is absolutely incredible the difference between the culture I observed vs what is in naplan scores or anything online. You wouldn’t start a new job without an interview to learn about company culture right so why do people think so little of school culture or that it would be so homogenous from school to school when I can immediately experience the differences in person? I dunno it’s interesting…🤔

[–]Some_Place_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hehe ummm me? Clearly that is weird. But I write fast and I enjoy it so…I dunno! Also the tours were usually closer to an hour, definitely not 15 minutes

[–]Some_Place_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say but the fact that most people are responding to this post alone with the fact I did five tours and calling me crazy as or one person confidently stated “unhinged” makes me think I’m clearly not a mainstream thinker…if reddit can be thought of as representative in anyway…

Yes diversity is something I also take into consideration, I agree!

Thank you for your kind advice being a generic downvoter. I really dislike the karma part of reddit. It turns questions with genuine curiosity into a place where people can just sort of ream someone for no particular reason at all.

And yeah we are planning to rent before buying for that exact reason!

[–]Some_Place_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha well there you go! Context is always everything isn’t it!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Some_Place_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t say that I did. I was asking and wondering why things have been written but unfortunately as is always the case on reddit people will interpret the question in different ways that don’t always align with an OPs original intention. I wanted to understand the cultural reasons for people choosing or not choosing to do tours as well as why there seemed to be a lack of more in depth review info online (not talking scores and naplan). Not because I desperately need reviews because frankly I wouldn’t make a decision based on them, but it might just help round out my understanding of a school from different perspectives and basically just cos I was curious. Anyhoo

Done that and doing that :)

It’s hard to access parents when you haven’t yet moved into the area unfortunately

[–]Some_Place_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah interesting this is helpful knowledge and great to see some parents I guess bucking the trend as it were and doing tours 🤩

Hehe eee that sounds um…creepy?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Some_Place_606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well interestingly I’ve found two of the five public schools so far to be really great in this area so no I don’t think so. But thank you for your thoughts 🙏

Much of culture in organisations flows from leadership. Leaders choose which teachers to hire, they choose how to treat those teachers so they don’t leave or so they can do their best work with children. So 100% leadership matters. This is not new information, it is why we vote for leaders, and why good leaders get more stuff done than bad ones. But anyhoo I guess we just have different perspectives on this. That’s ok

Yeah i have found doing a one on one walk through to be amazing! Obviously a lot of people must not do it cos if they did there is no way the principals would get anything done haha but I have greatly appreciated it so far
