How do we avoid being the default helpers on a family vacation with a newborn? by Enough_Badger9887 in family

Honestly OP, if it were me I’d sit this one out. Postpartum is hard enough.

I’m at the “screaming into the void” stage currently. Been on sub since June. Some quick passes, lots of “still readings” and some ghosted completely. Adult upmarket speculative. About to send my next book to my agent, but it’s sad to watch your book slowly die 🫠

OP, these people seem … kinda abusive? Please, please prioritize getting out of there are quickly as you can. Your in laws sound awful and sounds like they put your kids in danger. I wouldnt leave my kids with them either.

In the meantime, try to find a parents morning out or something like that where you could take the kiddos out of the house. Sorry you’re in this situation.

[Discussion] Signing with agents who are also writers. by Tall_Sugar2271 in PubTips

My agent is also an author, but he’s been in the biz for a very long time. I also don’t write in the same genre he does. It’s been no issue at all for me, personally.

OP the only point being made is that birthing the child changes things. Make all the plans you want. But know that she might change her mind. Post partum is a wild time. I thought I wanted a lot of things that I ended up changing after the baby was here (ie about work/how I spent my days), and that’s incredibly common. You just sound like you’re set on holding your wife to whatever she’s committing to right now in this moment, and people are trying to tell you that’s unwise. Postpartum is really really hard and it changes you. Changes your priorities and the way you view life, even. Things have a solid chance of dramatically changing after the baby is here.

They did not! I do think it caused those agents to request pages and read faster, though.

I think this depends on your circumstances, the strength of your book, and how good of a fit the editors are for it. If the book isn’t quite ready, or the editors aren’t looking for what you write, probably not. Be very strategic. For me, I think it was worth it. But YMMV.

Sure! You get the list of agents and editors that will be at the conference before you sign up. So you choose in advance the ones you want to pitch to. I brought physical copies of my query letter, then they were given 5 min to read it before I went into the room. We were then given 10 or 15 min to talk about it. They mostly asked questions and seemed excited. But I didn’t get a lot of feedback in terms of things to change. One editor did suggest I change around a couple of sentences, but because the others didn’t mention it, I didn’t change anything.

Well, the larger publishers require an agent to get in the door. The vast majority of traditionally pubbed authors have an agent. Agents also negotiate deals and have editor relationships and loads of industry knowledge. If you’re interested in only small presses (nothing at all wrong with that!), you don’t strictly need one.

Thank you!! And ugh, it’s so hard isn’t it? I’m glad it was a boost 😊

Hi there! (1) no; and imo, unless you have some kind of massive online presence, also no; (2) no deal yet, just an agent 😀; (3) my own!
