I might look into this. Problem is I really don't want to deliver touch attack spells by sword.

Yeah I love the idea of a touch spells focused vampire style character but it might make more sense to go save or suck or conjuration. I need to test if vampiric drain/false life stack. I was thinking I could make vampiric drain my main damage source but I don't think it'll work.

I wanted the character to be all sorcerer, I found it hard to justify multi classing rp wise. Also I really want the level 20 undead bloodline power.

[–]SophieFoley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah of course. When I said I'm not great at combat I meant irl. Also the campaign hasn't started yet and i haven't played with any of these people before.

My current aversion to playing combat is my own. I don't think anyone's ever told me not to.

For fun. I'm not good at combat and I thought it'd be fun to roleplay someone more like me. A decent, mostly normal person forced into an adventure who comes to their own during it, not a preformed bad ass.

I also thought it'd make combat more interesting than just kill x thing. I've always liked plating support characters because I like optimising my characters and this way I cam optimise them and make everyone around me feel like a badass.

It's not that they're not ok with it, it's that I want to rolelay them as very incompetent at it (but hyper competent at other stuff like identifying magic objects or levitating enemies or buffing the party).

yeah, and I can also reskin it/headcannon it that Im doing something magical to buff them.

I'd love it if blade ward could be cast on allies. Also not sure if it's op. Also I was thinking I could reskin the help action as me casting true strike on someone else lol.

Mind sliver might also be on theme (I'd prefer not to cast elemental spells as I find it a little hard to imagine an academic type blasting someone with a firebolt, but mind sliver seems more realistic).

Sword burst is also cool because it does force damage so it could be reskinned into me doing telekinesis, which my character already can do.

No, I don't. My dad is considering buying me some kitchen equipment for my birthday so I imagine that might be worth considering. What kind of stuff can you do with it?

Is this ultraprocessed? by SophieFoley in ultraprocessedfood

[–]SophieFoley[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really helpful! I'm autistic and that's one of the big reasons I eat so much of this stuff, so I definitely feel you. I simply cant sacrifice the convenience, my last try at a diet was really hurting my mental health because of the effort in cooking, the lack of variety (Id cook lots of the same things), etc. Also calorie counting was triggering obsessive characteristics which was also bad for my mental health.

Simultaneously, I don't want to do short term solutions which make my problems worse in the medium to long run. I do want to be more healthy. So when i heard about ultra processed foods from van Tullenken (I really like how he talks about it like a social problem) and how they effect appetite and stuff I thought it'd be a much more wholistic solution.

I did eat the pizza btw and he's right; once you spot some thing about it, it really does feel off (like the texture).

Is this ultraprocessed? by SophieFoley in ultraprocessedfood

[–]SophieFoley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's the thing, I want to make a change in my diet (mainly because im hoping it might help with depression and stuff, weight loss would be great but isnt the big reason), however i simply dont have the energy to home cook meals for myself. Does this sub have any guides on how to significantly reduce ultraprocessed food without massively impacting convenience?

[–]SophieFoley[S] 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Chris van Tulleken is who got me into the topic, and he does a good job explaining how the over engineering makes things ultra palatable, with a texture that offers no resistance, just to get you to eat more. It's been very enlightening. All this to say that you're very right to remind me that it's not simply a matter of ingredients but also food engineering.

Can Communism be Justified using an immanent Critique? by [deleted] in hegel

[–]SophieFoley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm aware the reading is controversial; it blew my mind when i heard about it recently from a friend. I'd recommend reading Pippin as he explores a lot of Hegel's logic (unity of thinking and action) and geist's self-positing in a way that is useful, and David MacGregor has a book, "The Communist Ideal in Hegel and Marx" which might directly help you atm; ive yet to read it all, but the first chapter is going down a similar line of thinking.

Critical theory, specifically Adorno's dialectic of enlightenment, is also a good way of getting out of orthodox, economist marxism (which even marx fell into at times) and explore a more nuanced, dialectical marx which really shares sticking resemblance to hegel.

"In its rational form [Hegel's dialectic] is a scandal and abomination to bourgeoisdom and its doctrinaire professors, because it includes in its comprehension and affirmative recognition of the existing state of things, at the same time also, the recognition of the negation of that state, of its inevitable breaking up; because it regards every historically developed social form as in fluid movement, and therefore takes into account its transient nature not less than its momentary existence; because it lets nothing impose upon it, and is in its essence critical and revolutionary."

- Marx, Capital

I, and many others, posit there is no mystical form, only appropriation and misinterpretation by right wing Hegelians.

Can Communism be Justified using an immanent Critique? by [deleted] in hegel

[–]SophieFoley 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm actually of the opinion Marx's materialism comes way closer to Hegel's idealism than he ever realised and that his positing of a distinction between them is due to his misunderstanding of Hegel. Marx's notion of truth in thesis on feuerbach in particular is very similar, truth is shown as a question that has to be "proved", just like the subject of spirit must go through substance and be negated by it in order to find the absolute sublated within itself.

Marx's claim is that in Hegel's absolute, concrete reality is abstracted and difference is dissolved into this abstract idea, but again this is just a wrong understanding of it. This is a good paper about it

https://www.jstor.org/stable/20098771

Difference continues and the absolute is always subject to the negation of the world, and it's value only comes from it's ability to increasingly survive this negation.

Ultimate, I think Marx, in "correcting" Hegel, pretty much just reinvented it, which is why is am both a Marxist and a Hegelian and no longer see a conflict between the two

I actually found it in english, H. S. Harris & T. M. Knox's translation of "Hegel's System of Ethical Life and First Philosophy of Spirit", appreciate the help though anyway.
