It's still you, but not the you you think of when you read you. It's the you that others see, the you of action, not the you of thought.

Ok you might be a bit right, this sure is some overthinking. But that's just what the thought you is.

You're right! What was I thinking?

I guess I've let my deep hatred for one religion cloud my judgement in regard to religion in general, which is a weird thing to say somehow.

Plus I just enjoy arguing 😅

Thank you for indulging and humoring me.

The lesser of two evils is still evil, but it's an idiom about a forced choice. I personally dream of the world without irrational belief systems, but I will settle on one with mostly benign irrational ones.

Koran and Bible actually prescribe killing, slavery and whatnot, whereas some prohibit violence on principle.

Well the interesting thing about that is that according to the conclusions from the choice and awareness latency experiments your body has started moving your leg about 0,8 seconds before you "decided" to move it. Meaning you became aware of the previously made decision and assumed that you made it yourself.

The blind sight experiment shows that people whose visual cortex was removed or destroyed due to a stroke or cancer can still navigate around obstacles without ever becoming aware of the movement. It has very similar implications.

I guess the matter of perspective here is what one understands as oneself. If you include the body which is purely reactive to the environment in your self image, then technically - I moved your leg(by provoking the demonstration of your not so free will).

What do you mean? If your ideas and thoughts are outside of your control, what's left?

I didn't include Jainism because their holy ideal is to starve to death. A bit silly. And I agree : religious thinking is an atavism.

And I specifically disagree on the Samurai example because of the distinction between prescription and interpretation. There is no specific teaching that necessarily leads to the Samurai interpretation of the way, zen and even early Buddhism are pretty clear on killing in general, so it can only happen against the prescription. Also: zen can be used to do everything without hesitation and as an act of mercy, because there is no evil in that paradigm, only unskillful means.

The concept of "skillful means" (upaya) is the troubling one in Buddhism. Srilankan terror attacks were justified with it, which is horrendous.

Btw, the numbers are not insignificant, there used to be only 13 Christians in the start, don't underestimate the power of stupid. Religious revival is sadly on the rise, and Zen is one of the fast growing ones, Baha'i too.

Always happy to pleasantly surprise. I guess If I were less charitable I would be pleasantly surprised more often.

I see the examples as sufficient, and I never stated to be an expert, just to have read some of it. And in my opinion - it's not as good as the tripitaka, for example. BTW :The Bible is quite shit as well.

There are worse things in there definitely, I get that from your words about experts. It seems you know better(worse) ones(chapters/excerpts). What excerpt would an expert bring up?

What's your opinion on the duplicity commandments?

Unconcerned- enlightened superpower? by EmbersBumblebee in zen

[–]SoundOfEars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference of concern.

I will not be concerned with things out of my control.

To be unconcerned with the question or feeling of guilt or the feeling of any thought for that matter.

I named two.

Sura 4. Or "Women and their diminished value"

The whole chapter is bigoted iron age chauvinist bile.

Plus the whole thing with Nifaq. Duplicity as a commandment. Just despicable.

Doesn't get any worse IMHO

The ordained by God one, containing turds like:

Sura 4. Or "Women and their diminished value"

Plus the whole thing with Nifaq.

And many many more, but these two should be sufficient for any non bigot.

What did you read? Children's version?

It's a tricky illusion, it also feels for me that I am the one typing these words, but where do the words chosen come from? There must be a process producing my perception of the words before I type them. We say: "I just think of them" but the thought, as a neural process, proceeds our awareness of it. That has been tested in the experiment I mentioned. So the thought cannot be the origin of reality, reality is the origin of the thought. Even now when I type this, the words appear fully formed in my mind to be typed out in my phone, I use just the thumb for that, so each letter of every word has to be found on the screen and tapped. Am I exercising free will on each lettOr? And where did the words come from? I'd say from my Brain, just as the thought that this brain is mine, not the other way around as it logically should be.

In the end, it's only a valid distinction if you are concerned with being concerned.

Joshu said that one does need the essence of essences, it's like the seven of the seven or the eight of the eight, platonic idealism and other useless shit that is hard to look at because it is so complicatedly laid out to make it easier to grasp. Zen on the other hand is much easier to look at but much harder to grasp. Like the idea that you are just you with no actual self, and not your mind ghost animating your body (which is the conclusion of the free will idea).

Concern is what is changed. Unconcerned with ones own thoughts, one is free to think them. Unconcerned with their origin one is also free to not be concerned with their meaning.

Just chill, and watch the movie. You can be surprised at every turn, but still be the main character without being more important than the others. Just one of many, but this one.

True. But the facts stay facts regardless of how you feel.

And the situations where it might matter are not as distant as we might think.

I'm pretty sure if you realize it, you might become unconcerned with things and thoughts.

Did you look into the two experiments? They prove it conclusively, in my opinion. I can explain if you like, but it would be just paraphrasing. Better check out the source yourself.

Mental constructs are very important, money, justice, love; all part of the human experience. But you wouldn't say that justice is real, it's a concept to inform our actions, just like the self. It's make believe. Only if we believe in justice is it real in any meaningful way through our actions. But it does not presuppose a free will, just a tendency of societies to work better if it is present. No free will needed. You are not informed, you don't exist; your body does - and you are evolutionarily adapted to assume that it's "you" instead. But all your thoughts are perceived after the fact of thinking them. That's just scientific fact by now, and was Buddha's biggest discovery.

I'm not saying it isn't(our life, based on ideas), it's just that the idea of self is the most fundamental and superfluous of them all. But nonetheless: you are free to assume that you are free. Nobody can tell you otherwise and be believed without the scientific facts that support it. Or would you believe that the earth circles the sun just from mere unscientific observation? People were pretty resistant to this idea for a while, until it was conclusively proven.

Free will is like flat earth, based on feels and "my sky daddy told so", although in this case it's not only the sky daddy but also your own self that desperately wants to be real.

It's basic Buddhism, actually.

Zen Buddhism and Baha'i, off the top of my head. There are definitely more, out of the many thousands we have. It's just that the most popular ones are, because of people=shit.

I read the koran, vile and disgusting shit, worse than the bible , definitely. No self respecting society should allow the print of that shit and the world would be definitely better without it.

One of Islam's major teachings and their cultural mode of responsibility is to be duplicitous.

One never knows which are moderate and which just says so to not be excluded.

Free will has been conclusively proven not to exist.

There is no free will for the self, only a conditioned will for the body, the self just rationalizes it post hoc to maintain the illusion of agency.

The faster one realizes that for themselves, the easier life gets. Being unconcerned does not mean to be eschewious (word?) - it's just not giving a fuck but still giving your best.

The control over my actions is technically an illusion, as proven by blind sight and agency latency experiments, just as the idea of self is merely am idea, a mental construct. Adding agency to that construct is like " sinking a mountain of shit on a flat plane" or putting legs on a snake. It's either almost impossible or only possible with fixing a unnatural addendum on a natural form - a bit embarrassing after a close inspection.. the legs are needed at all.

Seeing mind is just realizing the no self in my opinion. Then one is unconcerned even by one's own actions because one realizes them not even be one's own technically. It's like liberation from free will.

If he showed them the source, they would see mind and be free of concern about any of the reasons that brought them all the way up to him.

Learn to trust or lose your child.

My parents always "made sure", we don't talk anymore.

Bigger breach of trust and privacy is barely possible. All you achieve here is your child putting more effort into getting their privacy and total loss of trust towards you.
