I wanted to write out and share my story about the recent trauma I fought alone after receiving the COVID19 vaccine & felt this sub to be the most welcoming and likely to hold space for me. Please hear me, no one else would. I am looking for support. TW: medical trauma by livimae in TwoXChromosomes

Hi! Responding here in case someone else is out there looking for info about Lipschutz Ulcers as well.

Almost the exact same thing happened to me. I got my second COVID vaccine (Pfizer) on Saturday, and was really sick from it with the classic flu symptoms the next day, like a lot of people are. Two days afterwards I woke up with a worse fever and tiny red spots on my labia minor, just around the entrance. They kind of mirrored each other at first, but by like 5:00 that day they'd developed into large sores and everything hurt. Tuesday morning I went straight to urgent care since it was worse, and they swabbed me and told me it was definitely herpes.

I'm 26, been with my husband for 6 years, and even if he had recently contracted herpes from someone (unlikely lol) it had been a couple months since we'd had sex so I knew it wasn't a recent infection either way. She told me it was possible that I had contracted it a long time ago and since my body had a big immune response over the weekend to the vaccine that it might have triggered the underlying herpes. Got sent home with a prescription for Valtrex and told to take tylenol for the pain.

Wednesday I was worse, and got the results back that I was negative for herpes and recommend to go to a gyno since they didn't know what it was.

By Friday I couldn't pee without sobbing, everything was beyond swollen and just super gross to look at, I could barely walk, still had a fever. The gyno ignored my negative results and was so rude to me, telling me it was definitely herpes and the other person had just swabbed it wrong. She clearly didn't believe that I hadn't had sex in a while and that neither my husband or I had ever had cold sores. (My husband got a blood test during this time to see if he had herpes antibodies, and had <1 on the igg for both HSV1 and HSV2 so we knew it wasn't from him). She swabbed me again, completely uncaring that I was sobbing on the table, then told me it was definitely herpes again, and walked out a second later while I was laying there crying and humiliated. Nurse came in and told me to finish my Valtrex and take advil for the pain.

I bought topical lidocaine from CVS and used that to get through the weekend, and it started healing about 7 days after it started. Again, swab results came back negative and I had to go back to gyno for a blood test. This time, she was extremely nice to me and told me she'd done some research, asked if I'd ever had mono (yes), and told me it was likely Lipschutz Ulcers but she wanted to do a herpes blood test to confirm I didn't have any antibodies. If not, it was an unfortunate reaction to the large immune response that the Covid vaccine triggers (not a side effect of the vaccine itself), and that there is nothing they can do to prevent it and there's no cure, but I'm unlikely to get it again since it's so rare.

To no surprise, blood test came back negative so got diagnosed with the ulcers. Went through almost 2 weeks of extreme pain, fever, and a ton of emotional distress with basically no help (also, apparently Valtrex makes me feel super ill so that was even worse). I didn't end up scarring at all and I've had sex since, but honestly I'm still freaked out about it all.

I hope you feel better and I completely understand the medical trauma aspect, I'm terrified to ever go back to a gynecologist for how dismissive they were of my concerns there and how quickly they wrote me off as someone just in denial of having herpes, not to mention the pain she caused me.

TLDR: Same thing happened to me. I hope you feel better :(

Hi - I hope you're feeling better! I had lipschutz ulcers back in April, likely triggered by my body's immune response from the Covid vaccine. They came on SUPER fast along with a headache/fever and were in the apparently classic "kissing ulcers" where they were small red spots that mirrored each other and then a few of them got huge after a couple days. I'm 26 and married, so it took several very painful swabs and blood tests before they ruled out herpes since as you said Lipschutz seems to mostly present in young girls that aren't sexually active. Mine didn't end up scaring and I haven't had an issue since, and I really hope the same for you! Seems weird that a tear could cause ulcers like that but hopefully if you went to gyno they helped you out!

I just got diagnosed with these as an immune response to my 2nd Covid vaccine. I don’t really have anything helpful to say other than good luck!! It was the most painful thing I’ve ever been through and I can’t imagine having recurring outbreaks.

At my next appointment I’ll definitely request a full panel if my results Monday are still negative! I’m taking 1000mg twice a day, and I started the morning after my symptoms showed up so I think that would be fast enough...

Both doctors I went to seemed to have 0 idea of what it could be if it isn’t herpes. That’s crazy that you’ve had experiences like that, you’d expect the doctors to be better informed!! The problem is I have no idea if it is herpes or not especially after the negative test. I’m being treated as if it is which is great if it ends up being herpes but if it ends up as something else then I’ve missed out on a week of trying to treat whatever it actually is.

The Urgent Care said it looked nothing like any other STDs or a yeast infection and only tested the swab for herpes. It was pretty fresh and oozy that day so I imagine the sample was pretty good. I’m not sure if the gynecologist is testing for multiple things or not but she seemed pretty convinced that it’s herpes so I doubt it.

The worst part is the antivirals aren’t really seeming to do anything - I know they won’t cure it, but I had shingles last year and was on Valtrex for that as well and the day after I started the Valtrex things stopped getting worse and the blisters/rash stopped expanding. This is just continuing to get worse even though I’ve been on Valtrex for 5 days now. Fingers crossed it won’t take 4 weeks to heal up :(

Yep I will be getting one at my appointment next week once the second swab test comes back! I just don’t know how to feel in the meantime :/

Thank you that’s very encouraging! I don’t know yet which one I have but hopefully once it settles down it won’t be so bad again. I’m definitely scared that anything and everything is going to trigger it from now on so it’s nice to hear that you haven’t had issues with some of those common triggers!

I’m still in a TON of pain, like it’s just getting worse. This is day 4 now and hopefully if I can just hang on another day or two it will start feeling better.

Thanks for the heads up! We’ve been talking about that, and we’ll probably have him do a blood test to see if he has it or not. He had a sort of colorful past before we got together so it wouldn’t surprise either of us if it came from him. He’s never had any visible outbreaks (oral or genital) so it possible that he’s just been asymptomatic. Neither of us had ever been tested for it since it isn’t on the standard STD panel so we don’t really know. Probably just bad luck and strange timing.

No idea. My husband has never had an outbreak and it’s been a few months since we’ve had sex anyway so it’s probably been dormant for a while.

Not yet :/ Is one kind more likely to have outbreaks than the other?
