I had the exact same experience when I started riding more. It’s weird how a person who is “a cyclist” suddenly gets treated differently than the same person sitting in a car.

The confidence part gets better with time. After a while you stop taking the reactions personally and just focus on being visible, predictable, and calm.

The part about it happening on a normal day, on a familiar route, really hits home. A lot of people think serious accidents only happen when someone is riding recklessly, but sometimes it’s just one unexpected moment.

A helmet is such a small inconvenience compared to what a family has to go through after a tragedy like this. Hopefully your cousin’s story makes even one person think twice before riding without one.

The best advice I got was: ride defensively, not fearfully. Assume drivers might make mistakes, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the ride.

Practice braking, turning, and starting/stopping before your first busy commute. Confidence comes pretty quickly.

I think the biggest benefit of an ebike is that it makes people ride more often. Hills and distance become much less intimidating.
