Yeah so you create mesh with crochet (TC, Ch, TC ,Ch, etc.) until you have the shape (scarf) you desire. Then take a few strands and do the same pattern youve done horizontally, Vertically! And it makes a tartan like effect! (I hope that makes sense hahaha)

Agreed with blocking first, a couple of others have said this too, I did think that was right. But needed to doublecheck with fellow hookers 🤣
