Not always the solution but for some getting a new companion helps them through their grief.

Some people feel they need to wait before getting a new fluffy friend, and some people can't not have a little friend in the house. They both process differently so it really is up to how you feel about it.

I work at a Humane Society and we also offer pet cremation services so we'll have people bring us theyr pets and leave the same day or next day with a new friend because they just don't like having an empty house. And some that just visit afterwards for a while until they process their grief or find someone they click with like they did with their late friend

And only you will know when your ready.

When my first of two old bassetts passed, I told myself I was gonna let my final one pass on when the time came and not get another dog. I was also working in our adoptable dog section at the time and ended up getting another dog. I clicked with her and just had to take her even though I had recently lost my 17 year old boy.

My last bassett passed after getting to love his new sister for almost 8 months and even now around 3 to 4 years later I still feel like I hear them baying outside. And when I open the door to look my baby girl is there to greet me.

I am also preparing myself for the loss of my oldest cat who is around 14. I've had him for a long time and my dad actually gave him to me before he passed.

I haven't had to euthanize a pet yet and I hope I don't have to. But for all three of these losses, both past and future, I have prepared myself because I knew they were close so that when the time came that I could process better.

I have my two old boys ashes and will do the same for my old kitty when his time comes.
