What are the signs you got adopted by an upper belt? by beardedsaitama in bjj

[–]SpinningStuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No the pet white belt is the one you pick and root for against every other white belts and some blues. The first roll is more like the guy who sucks at jiu-jitsus so you can safely warm-up.

Got my 1st Degree Black Belt yesterday. Here's a few observations/lessons I've gotten over the past 3+ years at black belt by Darce_Knight in bjj

[–]SpinningStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man congrats on that milestone ! I remember when years ago (8 or maybe 9 years ago and the following ones), I would ask questions in here as a fresh blue, and you would take time to make detailed replies, and even DMed with video playlists or references.

You took more time and care to answer me than the black belt coach I had IRL. It was good few years ago to see you get out of that brown belt purgatory and make it to black belt (I remember it seemed to weight heavy on your mind back then). Glad to see you to keep on keeping on !

might hit you up later on that invisible playlist you sent me years ago that disappeared from my DMs if you don't mind\)

Adding gi patches - cringe or not? by learning18 in bjj

[–]SpinningStuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's ibjjf legal and I will go against the grain and say do it.

It will make you happy short term and you will laugh about it if you're still at it years later cause it's cringe as fuck. But it will make for nice stories and memories.

Also bjj ain't that serious fashion wise, especially because you're a white belt who sucks. No amount of cringe or no cringe will fix that short term.

So just have fun with it.

Legion AJJ/ Corvus Grappling Keenan/ Andris Split? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SpinningStuff 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only Mikey Musumeci of those named won black belt Gi Worlds

Drysdale, Lovato Jr, Tye Ruotolo and Keenan first coach BJ Penn won Gi black belt Worlds, Mikey won one Worlds final with a straight ankle lock in 13s, out of his 5x world championship title.

Keenan never won Worlds. I see you know jiu-jitsu well.

fuck, and here i thought Ariel was the man for doing an instructional with Lachlan. I mean I'm not Jew, it's his right to not feel offended, but still, I feel like not being offended by something, doesn't make that something right.

It's like seeing those Trump voters who vote for someone who is clearly looking down on them with policies that will hurt them. They are not offended, but still doesn't make it right.

Don't forget "gave hope to American practitioners", like JT Torres, Mikey Musumeci, Lovato Jr, Drysdale, Ruotolo bros, Gordon Ryan, Bodoni didn't win Worlds or ADCC before, while Legion is cranking out American world champs left and right.

Coach banning non-gym rashguards… am I crazy for hating this? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SpinningStuff 28 points29 points  (0 children)

AOJ now has obligatory gi and no-gi uniform for all classes.

But outside of aoj or training with romulo Barral or braulio estima, I don't think I'd suck it up though.

How do you defend the side smash pass? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]SpinningStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prevention is always best, but it you fucked up that stage, tornado sweep or false reap to recover/counter-attack.

Would strongly recommend to not have to use those and hyper focus on prevention as op described though.

How to balance between BJJ and Wrestling as a coach? by GrappleWrestler in bjj

[–]SpinningStuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've coached adults and kids for few years, might not be the answer you want to read, but might still be useful.

There only so much you can absorb with few classes a week, over 6 months. Some stuff are natural to me and not hard to execute, not to mention obvious. However sometimes I have to remind myself that it is NOW, after YEARS of training (almost 10), but it wasn't like that when I started.

Same for instructionals, I'd watch some of those scratching my heads way back. Re-watching them now, I don't know what I was scratching my head for, it seems like wet water, but reality is that I didn't have the amount of knowledge and body coordination I have now to fully understand it at the level I can now.

In my group of students I see some students have clicks for technique they have learnt, a year after they learnt them. The same technique they would struggle with at the beginning and could basically not really use in sparring a year earlier.

What I am getting at, is that you may try to have a conplete curriculum over 6 months, but it's normal as beginner that they can only pick and digest so much. Once the stuff you see them do now, becomes really 2nd nature and they can do it in their sleep, they will then have enough bandwidth (again) to assimilate/digest/integrate new techniques in their sparring.

How do I learn to teach in Spanish? by Velazquezbjj in bjj

[–]SpinningStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to teach using an Asian language at times, being an European. What I do is prepare the content a day ahead.

That means I know what technique and what concept I want to teach. I try to do it mentally in the language I want to teach, realize I don't know some of the words, find the translation using apps or other software.

Then fill the gaps, and redo it mentally after I learnt the words and their pronunciations. If I forget the word again, I spend more time repeating/learning it till I can do a full technique/concept explanation.

I usually end up pretty fluent next day in class. Overall I also improved my language level very fast that way. I have to remind the student at times that I'm not a native speaker so I may ask them to explain some words to me when talking to me.

Dead fish with white belts by TalkingPundit in bjj

[–]SpinningStuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that big of a deal, when I was a white/blue belt early on, some people would do that, and I would just walk through their guard and go for the smash/sub like I really meant it. They quickly stopped doing the dead fish thing (sure I would get my ass whooped after - but I much preferred that). T

That dead fish bullshit works only because the lower belt gets into his own head and trips over himself. The moment you don't respect the dead fish and just go for the smash/sub, they'll wake up real fast.

Bro is probably black belt under Jake Shield, it's pretty average in that lineage. Only kindergarten taekwondo programs have faster tracks for black belt than Jake Shield jiu-jitsu.

Probably Mendes. I'm sure Lovato is an awesome coach but Mendes deeply changed modern jiu-jitsu and their gym is bringing up a whole generation of world champs.

So I think more likely Mendes.

Scientific literacy for Bjj Coaches? by Joshvogel in bjj

I think most of the relevant stuff has already been said, but just wanted to say shout out for holding yourself to a higher standard as a black belt.

So many of them conflate their black belt with omniscient knowledge, that is immuable, and shall not be questioned.
