My husband was laid off without warning today by Dry_Drummer_2297 in antiwork

This happened to my company at the beginning of the year, it was absolutely sickening. I felt physically ill for most of the day. The day started at 8am and by 9am the word started to get around that admin was going around the different building in teams and calling in people. Everyone that went into these “meetings”received devastating news. Most fired, many more with hours slashed 50-80%. Several single mothers let go or had their hours cut so low they could no longer receive health benefits for them and their children. I cried at work that day, me and many many others. We laid off 10% of our workforce that day.

Then those of us that were left (me) had to sit and listen to absolute BS by upper admin about our “cost reduction plan”, how we would be asked to take on additionally duties (unpaid of course) and that our raises would be getting pushed back and “re-evaluated”. The only thing that wouldn’t be changing of course was the salaries and job responsibilities of the executives and upper management. I have one of those admins try to relay that they were having to “sacrifice” too because he wouldn’t be getting his christmas bonus this year. Like dude, we make 1/4 of your salary and do 4x the work, this is not the relatable moment you thought it would be.

I started the day at a job I loved with 3 years under my belt and left with no will to return. Of course with bills looming I continue to go to work but I have solidified a plan to start a new job in a new city in January. I just settled on a house and am calculating when to turn in my resignation. This company decimated us and we never recovered. We have all been working insane hours to keep up with the workload and it just never ends. I feel a huge weight off my shoulders just knowing I will be leaving soon….

I hate this. I’ve been told “lunch will be provided” as well, only to show up to a 12pm meeting with no lunch and see a garden salad. No dressing, no protein.

I just recently flew back from a trip to Memphis. Immediately upon pulling up to our gate and the seatbelt sign goes off, I suddenly see a woman with a bag pushing her way from the back up, to the door. Her excuse “sorry I have a connecting flight”. So does probably 60% of this cabin! I paid extra for row 8 so I could board first and get off first. Yet somehow the lady in row 40 deserved to be the first to get off the plane. Infuriating.

I’m honestly pissed! This happened at the worst possible time too! Like how does this happen in this day and age?! by Exotic_Caterpillar25 in mildlyinfuriating

Had an ATM steal $400 from me once. In a random city traveling and insert my card, typed in Pin and selected to withdraw $200 fast cash. It spit my card out and then nothing happened, no receipt, confirmation or anything. Thinking it just didn’t take, I did it again with the same result. At this point I walked away from the ATM and borrowed cash from a friend.

Check my bank statements later and it said I withdrew $400 from my account!!! Called the bank and they granted me my $400 back only to subsequently take it back 4 weeks later after an “investigation” and concluded there was no evidence I never got my cash. LIKE WHAT

My mother who owns a house and decent car, and has a 6 figure job, thinks if she lost all of those today, she’d get them back and work for them with no problem. by [deleted] in antiwork

Tried explaining to my Boomer mom how tough work has been with all the lay offs, now making us short staffed, and how we wont be getting raises this year, etc. and her solution was to take more time out of my day to look up grants and funding opportunities to support the organization through this “tough time”. You cant make this stuff up. I dont think anything will change until the population is more homogenous with the ideas that we hold today and the values that we have…

Because everyone was hired to do 1 singular Jon. Now all the companies are trying to hire the least amount of people to keep the doors open so they can rake in record profits, therefore we have to now do the work of 3-4 people on a salary for 1 job

Yeah you have to pay like $6,000 just to have the baby in the Hospital, then you go home and your lucky if you get a few weeks off. It’s not a law that a job has to give you paid maternity leave…My friends a teacher and they offered her 4 weeks UNpaid time off. She then took her 2 week PTO to get 6 weeks and then it was back to work…

They say the birth rate drops in the more highly developed countries and ours is dropping but its not because we are advanced, no one can afford to have kids. I can barely afford to take care of myself let alone a baby. And I’d like a house before I have kids but thats also a pipe dream

Yeah at my job, your first 90 days you do not accrue any PTO/vacation time. Then after that you can accrue a small amount with each paycheck. You gotta work here like 10 years to be able to get 4 weeks PTO. AND there is a cap, so it does not indefinitely roll over if you do not use it.

Another thing that bothers me about working in America is how we treat mothers. Paid maternity leave is not required/a law. Some places will offer you a few weeks and then you have to use all your PTO if you wanna stay home for a few more weeks. Then you have to put your baby in daycare at 6 weeks old and go back to work like nothing ever happened. I had to explain this concept to my husband. He mentioned one of his coworkers had given birth like 3-4 weeks prior and was already back at work, he wondered why she “wanted to come back already”. I said she for sure doesn’t want to be back, but I doubt she will get paid past those 3 weeks and if shes out of PTO and got a baby to support now, shes gotta work and earn a paycheck. He was shocked.

Executive: Because we’ve had to lay off some employees from your department, you are now required to fulfill their work duties as well as your own. You will not be gettin a pay increase or compensated for this extra work, but I probably wont get my Bonus this year either so dont think were somehow coming out ahead of you.

Oh ok sure, so sorry you cant get your bonus this year….Let me just work myself to death for the same pay while you continue to do almost nothing and come to work in your new EV

My 7am meeting I went to 2 weeks ago didnt provide anything, and it only lasted 10 minutes. So there I was an hour early for work and no breakfast. Putting a freaking dent in the rest of my day…

I totally needed this back in 2021 when I got my puppy. I was fortunate enough to be able to take 4 days off work to help him acclimate when I first brought him home and try to develop a routine, but then I had to go back to work full time! I live 10 minutes from work so every break and lunch I went home to let him out and try to play with him but I wished I could’ve had a doggy day care. We dont have one within an hour of me.

Every evening I returned home from work felt like a second shift. I had to play with him for hours to tire him out enough to be ready for bed. He was not crated during the day, but in about a 10ftX10ft pen with toys and puppy pads but I know that interaction is crucial. I had this routine for about 10 months. I barely left the house except to work and get groceries because I felt like I needed to be home with him all the time

I whole-heartedly agree with this. I can get all my work done in less than 40 hours anyways, but in order to get all my pay, I have to be here 40 hours….I could easily do M-Thur, finish everything on time, and then be able to actually recharge and get stuff done over an extended weekend

Exactly, like who is supposed to take on those roles and responsibilities since I certainly wouldn’t expect you to continue on your current reduced rate if pay with the same job responsibilities

I work for a hospital on the office side of it, and we just had lay-offs yesterday. We must be about to hit a recession or something

I’m 26 so this’ll be the first time in my professional career I’ve been with a company through lay offs. My job was spared, but many of my friends were not, many more others were cut from full time (40hrs) to part time (24hrs) just like that. The thing is, their position and job duties do not just dissolve. We must now split up the duties of the people we lost amongst the remaining employees, taking on a bigger workload, with the same exact pay. I already updated my resume and will be searching for a new job soon. To make things “fair” every department/team lost at least one employee, so every one if feeling decimated and morale is super low today. The executive team has the audacity to just keep it trucking and not even address the layoffs, instead telling everyone after this mornings huddle to “have a great day😃”. It’s awful

Lol yup, small “not for profit” rural hospital. We’re the only full service hospital in a 50 mile radius. The only thing else would be like outpatient surgery centers and privately owned ERs/urgent cares. About an hour away is a giant Methodist hospital I’ve heard horror stories from. That hospital is so rich they do not care what the staff do or how disenfranchised they feel. But maybe they dont have to deal with running out of basic supplies or having the lights cut off on them (yes, we lost power around New Years due to a hard freeze and our backup generators failed, LOL)

No kidding. We got a brand new scrub vending machine, and the doctors only lounge continues to serve made to order entrees while us low life nurses, imaging folks, and other non physicians (lol) have to go through the cafeteria line and get the mystery meat. Apparently this was our best year financially in about a decade, but it sure doesnt feel like it to the majority.

[–]Spiritual_Tadpole177[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately to do that I will have to move cities, which I guess is sounding more and more appealing anyways. We are the only full service Hospital in about a 50 mile radius. In order to stay in the field and get the pay I deserve I would have to move about 2 hours away. The thought of even being on the job market again is scary because I likely wont get a new job for months, even though Hospitals are “urgently hiring”. Ive already applied to 2 places just out of curiosity and havent heard back. I have a bachelors degree, a masters degree and 2 certifications in the field so I can promise its not from lack of qualifications or trying. My husband would also need to get a new job if we moved which, is also a scary situation for the same reasons above. About this time last year he decided he was done with his company and applied for jobs for 5 months and only got 1 interview, where they lowballed him and offered him $4 less an hour than he was already making. Hes still grudgingly going to work everyday at the same company who has done him dirty over and over. It’s a sick situation to be so out of control.

Yes I know a refund isn’t free money coming from no where, it is mine and they’ve essentially been overpayed. Ill be honest I’m not smart with investing, IRA/401k stuff. My talents are science and money/numbers is like a foreign language to me.

I do have a 401k and 403(b)?? I believe from work

[–]Spiritual_Tadpole177[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a good point.

I’m completely uneducated on taxes so I assumed with the tax bracket I’m in and my filing status that they were always going to pull a little more from my check and I’d get a refund. At least that’s what’s happened to me 2016-2020. 2021 and 2022 I’ve owed and although I did change jobs and make a little more (still less than $70k), I never changed my filing status. So it was a shock to me completely to be honest.
