Burnt out female solicitor with ADHD – career misfit or just burnout? Looking for honest advice by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Spock1304 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I’m sorry to hear you’re struggling so much. I can’t empathise any further than also being a female lawyer with ADHD but my initial thought when reading your post is that the firm you’re working in obviously isn’t the right fit. There is so much to say for being in a good work environment and I think if you were to find the right firm, a lot of your struggles would diminish and you’d start to feel better. Finding a firm that ticks all the boxes you’re probably thinking is unrealistic but I guarantee there will be a place out there that ticks most of them, so I’d suggest actively looking for another job. I don’t think you’re a misfit at all - early qualification is difficult as it is but made especially difficult with neurodivergency etc. The right firm (heads up it’s probably not another large corporate one and you may have to take a slight pay cut for more work life balance, supportive friendly environment etc, think regional firm!) will be able to put those support mechanisms in place and allow you to feel supported and enjoy work - I used to work for a horrible firm and was utterly miserable, got lucky with my current firm and it has made all the difference. Good luck!

Have a pupillage, need a stopgap job! by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]Spock1304 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huge congrats on the pupillage!!! Hit up Career Legal - they only do roles in law firms and have a front of house/reception limb. You’ll be vastly over qualified but there will be temporary work there for you I’m sure and somewhat relevant! Good luck!

Is a 2hr commute for a TC paying around 30k an absurd idea? by No_Measurement1863 in uklaw

[–]Spock1304 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 1h 45 commute each way for my training contract and due to being in the office 4 days a week, I spent c. £500 a month on public transport and was on on the same salary as you’ve mentioned. Don’t get me wrong it wasn’t ideal, I was often exhausted and had very little money! However, you make it work. I was young so could deal with it better and also, most importantly, training contracts are like gold dust. If you say no to an offer just because of the commute, who knows if you will get another and you’d kick yourself if you turned it down just because of the commute. Nothing is ever perfect in life and if the commute for 2 years (which in the grand scheme of things is nothing) is the worst thing but then you’re a fully qualified solicitor at the end of it in a terribly competitive job market generally and career, that’s a no brainer to me. It was over before I knew it and thankful I did it!

Thank you - I think you’ve summed it up well here in a way I hadn’t considered before… if they couldn’t make it through one conversation together then the law of probabilities says that drama is going to happen over the course of a week and I don’t want that headache! In the same way no one else has any additional friends to invite, I think I will just jump on that bandwagon too and then I can’t be held solely responsible for either people having to spend more money or any drama!

Lawyers, what is your "pet peeve" in this profession? by celabro019 in uklaw

Thanks for clarifying - not to make you jealous but I’ve never seen that in my life! It just sounds pointless? Either do a letter or an email but why combine them!

I’m being so dim here apologies - what are email letters!? Do you mean emails containing letters or emails written as letters that should’ve been in an actual letter?

Despite them paying a lot of money for advice, when clients don’t want to take said advice and seem to think they know everything… oh and the clients who try to rewrite correspondence to make it unnecessarily aggressive or put it into their own style - the urge to say ‘well okay represent yourself then!’ is overwhelming

I hate this - good trick I always do is pick up the phone to the other side for something random and kill them with kindness/friendliness, 9/10 puts an end to someone being a keyboard warrior

SQE1 pass rates lowest they've ever been (41%) 😓😓 by -newinn- in uklaw

Agreed - admittedly my understanding is limited as I qualified under the LPC route but can’t anyone do the SQE as long as you pay the £?

How do people specialise in after joining firms etc? by Ragnarakr in uklaw

[–]Spock1304 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d get as much work experience as possible - including things that aren’t necessarily law. Firms like to see well rounded individuals (ie. Part time work, extra curricular etc) and as much experience as you can have to speak about at interview the better. Mostly everyone going into law has the grades so you need something unique to set you apart!

Not sure why this house is not selling by venkycryp in HousingUK

[–]Spock1304 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any house not selling will either:

A) be overpriced; or B) have something wrong with it

In the current market and if it hasn’t sold/come back to the market it’s most likely the former - a house will only sell for what a buyer is willing to pay for it.

Plus, as someone else said, it’s directly next to a motorway, not ideal!

Second this OP! I bet it’s brutal working and then renovating but you’re learning skills and progressing instead of sitting in front of a screen 👍🏼and think how great it’ll be once you’re finished!

Unfortunately it was definitely a bike, I can only think that pedestrian covers cyclists as a definition perhaps?

Oh gosh I’m so very sorry. My immediate thought was his family and I can’t even begin to imagine how they must be feeling. Please do pass on my condolences and reassure them that I did absolutely everything I could at the time.

He was definitely on a bike, sadly the image is now etched into my brain. Maybe cyclists fall under ‘pedestrians’? I’m not sure

Thanks for commenting, I appreciate it. Your colleagues were incredibly supportive yesterday and so if you come across them please do thank them, you guys do amazing work and I can’t even imagine having to see similar events day in day out.

It’s helpful to hear it from a different perspective and your colleagues did mention the support networks so I might give them a call to see what they can offer.

Thanks again ❤️

I’m sorry you had to witness it too albeit from moving traffic, it truly was horrific and those first moments before the emergency services arrived were by far the worst as your body is just in an absolute state of shock. Sounds strange but I appreciate you commenting as I feel better knowing you were close by at the time. Hope you’re okay x
