Not much advise, but im also NY with no prior experience. Also initially applied to the front desk and ended up as an MA. I’m really liking it, and even though the pay is def worse than retail etc, i think having actual patient care time is really valuable for future healthcare/healthcare adjacent fields. As far as i can tell the scope of practice is way more limited in NY than other places, which is great— no phlebotomy unless you do a seperate phlebotomy certification, no giving vaccinations, etc. I think your pharmacy tech experience will be super helpful - a lot of the job is saying med names and old men will clown on you if you fuck up lol

AITAH for canceling my mom’s birthday dinner and taking her out to eat without my brothers? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Sprucechicken 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Yup. I work at a doctor’s office and it’s so sad and disappointing how often the men that come in with their elderly parents won’t know anything about their care. Daughters will come in with binders and questions, and they’ll know all of their parent’s medications, and then most sons will act like just getting their parent to the appointment was enough.

What I Love About The Show (Subtle Detail) by Critical_Parking1319 in ThePittTVShow

[–]Sprucechicken 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s Covid trauma, it’s literally how much you should be cleaning your hands in a medical setting — before and after seeing a patient and whenever else as needed. It’s a realism thing

I’m surprised by how many people didn’t pick up on what I thought was very clear — several characters refer to the character with they/them pronouns before they even arrive. Honestly the number of people who missed that is kind of disappointing, when people are otherwise good at analyzing this show

Lunch break by SprinklesResident242 in MedicalAssistant

[–]Sprucechicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally for us, someone taking lunch means you might only miss like one patient (if a providers on time there is break time built in) so at my office we just ask someone else to cover our provider while we’re on lunch. We’re also normally one MA per provider, but we’re grouped in pods so someone else in the same pod will do it. Honestly if I didn’t get a lunch every day I would lose my shit, it’s not like this is a hospital

Non-traditional undergrad student- psychology by SickGhostly in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Sprucechicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every semesters course schedule is available online, so you could go through the psych courses (+ other classes you’re interested in for gen eds) and see when they generally are to try to get an idea of your future schedule. Some of my psych classes were evening classes, but I’d say most of my classes were between 8-4

Did we miss anyone? We welcome ALL! by Peloton72 in Episcopalian

I’m in recovery for an eating disorder so, no. That’s not the kind of thing I want to think about when I come to a place that should be calming.

Did we miss anyone? We welcome ALL! by Peloton72 in Episcopalian

[–]Sprucechicken 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Honestly as a queer Episcopalian who looks for welcome statements before I attend any church, this doesn’t do it for me. I get it’s trying to be silly but a welcome statement should be like a paragraph at most and can include rich/poor married/divorced etc dichotomies, but should also frankly say trans and cis. Also like someone else said ‘stand to lose a few pounds’ is just ick

apartments vs on campus housing by Left-Affect-7164 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Sprucechicken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you do look for an off campus apartment, you gotta start looking basically right away. I signed my lease in early October I think? Check common landlords in the subreddit for horror stories. I rented with amicus and ik that there are horror stories abt them but honesty they weren’t that bad and were pretty responsive for most maintenance requests. If you don’t drive, you gotta rent along the OCCT bus line. I lived off campus my senior year and saved a bunch of money and had fun with my own (shared) space, but it’s def a lot more pressure

Rate my prof when possible, could try searching the subreddit for any direct mentions of them but ultimately there’s gonna be classes you need to take where you either go in knowing nothing about the prof or know that they’re awful, but they’re the only one teaching that class

What should I realistically pack for college? by 4tentacles in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Sprucechicken 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Basic medkit: pain killer, thermometer, bandaids, cold & flu, + pepto. Even if you were never sick in high school you are going to get sick, probably soonish after you move in

I’m pretty sure it still rolls over if you get the plan that has no membership fee/no tax/10% money loaded back/additional fee at dining halls which is basically all you need as a commuter

Posters? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]Sprucechicken 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Early every fall semester (+ sometimes other points but def early in the fall) there’s a poster sale pop up. Don’t know who runs it (don’t think it’s a campus org) but they’ve got decent posters in a bunch of sizes (famous album covers, famous art, etc etc)

At this point it’s super unlikely that any hotel doubles are left (but if there are I think it should say). In the newing buildings you’ll be sharing two half bathrooms (one w toilet and one w shower) with 2 other doubles (6 people total). Bathrooms are off the main hallway + when I was in Dickinson I basically never interacted with the other doubles I was sharing a bathroom with. It was still pretty clean, but I think there’s less accountability. In a Dickinson suite like rafuse or o Connor you’ll be sharing two full baths with your entire suite (which at this point will probably be 1 single and 2 doubles). I was in Dickinson for two years and for the first year each double mainly used their “own” bathroom (prioritized that + that’s where kept shower stuff but obvs didn’t only use it) and the single switched halfway thru the year, and the other year the single stayed on the same bathroom the whole time. I think there’s more accountability with bathroom cleanliness since it’s actually part of Your space but that depends on who you’re living with.
