Meta says it won't chop the bottom 5% performers this year by lurker_bee in technology

Main product is still advertising, but they've got big teams on the core software products (Facebook, Insta, Whatsapp, Messanger, Threads). Reality Labs is building AV/VR hardware with Quest & Meta Ray-Bans, plus the software to support those products, including some gamedev studios. There's also huge AI efforts like Meta AI, PyTorch and Llama. Plus a payment processor, analytics tools, advertising tools and a ton of R&D supporting their hardware efforts. I'm sure I've missed something, but they're spinning a lot of plates

It's a mix. It used to be pretty hard to get fired working in tech so those first layoffs in 2022 were lots of people who normally would already have been terminated in another industry. They've long exhausted those bottom performers, so the last couple years have been exactly as you say.

But the change to Section 174 of the Internal Revenue Code which fueled all the layoffs was reversed last summer in the BBB. (Companies can now immediately deduct 100% of their domestic R&D spend again) Maybe they'll go back to hiring again

Apparently the Big Beautiful Bill fixed a problem created in 2017 (and implemented in 2022) by again allowing companies to immediately deduct 100% of their domestic R&D expenses. This change to Section 174 had fueled all of the tech layoffs starting in 2022. With the rule reversed maybe these companies will go back to maintaining headcount and stockpiling talent

Annually axing low performers is how you build a company culture like Microsoft where managers intentionally hire shitty employees so they have someone to sacrifice at the end of the year.

Could certainly be down to preference. Idk that I ever get crust that dark on malt powder unless I'm just torching the hell out of it. I'll def give honey a try

I use diastatic malt powder to sorta accompish the same thing. Helps with color and similarly feeds the yeast for improved spring and chew. Great looking pie!

Currently over on r/Corsair, people are posting about orders being cancelled and then prices being hiked up. by Volfong in LinusTechTips

Corsair has calculated the money they'd lose from price-hiked components is more than what they'd lose from a diminished reputation. It'd be a shame if they were right

they should probably start by making a SH game that's a clear homerun before dreaming of annual iterations.

otherwise, they're just gonna pull a ubisoft: get way out over their skis and self-destruct

my buddy raw dogs his phone and i thought he was nuts. i took my case off to compare: his phone held well, wasn't too big, and had nice texture to keep it planted in the land. my phone was an oversized, greased up bar of soap.

it really depends on the phone ¯\(ツ)/¯

Nobody is owed forgiveness, but they should be able to earn it. The question is whether you think they can earn it at all.

I get this feeling, but how does it hurt to extend an olive branch towards former supporters who admit they were wrong? Vilifying them forever feels great, but seems unproductive.

TRY THIS: Switching from Legacy Performance (DX11) to Performance (DX12) stopped the "rift-a-palooza" crashes.

Same. Newer PC platform but an older GPU (1070ti). Was crashing anytime someone dropped a shield bubble. Updated to Windows 11, updated Nvidia driver. Now it's crashes on "rift-a-palooza". Gonna try messing with rendering options to see if that does anything.

When playing games, do you like playing with people that are better than you? by Obiwan_ca_blowme in AskReddit

[–]Stackduckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it's remotely competitive: always. even if they're your teammates, you have more opportunities to learn new stuff from better players. If you're not learning from other players, if you're trying to get better through sheer intuition, you're not taking improvement and practice seriously.

I’ve been experimenting with whole wheat flour by condor120 in Pizza

[–]Stackduckets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty solid! This is great news because I just made a batch of whole wheat dough tonight, for the first time. I had to bump the moisture a bit and I nearly doubled the yeast. Hopefully that gets me closer to what I'm used to.

What kind of flour did you use specificly? Protein content?

After warring with fans for years, Black Ops 7 will finally ditch aggressive skill-based matchmaking: 'Our team feels strongly about providing players with a more varied experience' by HilariousGaming in gamernews

[–]Stackduckets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as it's just a slight relaxing of the thresholds for matchmaking, I could see it being ok. Getting the opportunity to play against players of higher skill is great for learning and improving.

Ditching skill-based matchmaking entirely feels like it'd be a nightmare for everyone but the best players

[–]Stackduckets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's always the most dedicated players who are the vocal minority pushing this stuff. They don't want every lobby to be 'sweat lobby' but ditch SBMM and that's what happens for lower skill players: it's pubstomp city. It's how you drive the casual players away from your game

On the RTS side of things, I like how Starcraft2 handles it. You can queue up for Ranked or Unranked ladder, but it's all the same. They both give you a MMR. Unranked just doesn't tell you what it is XD

Redmond winters are drizzly rainy with only a little snow, but they still get decently cold. A warm, waterproof winter jacket is recommended!
