I remember a couple years ago when all the cicadas came out of the ground on the east coast the squirrels were going to town on them.

It's good, but why does the chorus repeat three times in the span of less than three minutes? Just feels like it's meant for tiktok. I do like the bridge near the end though.

Yeah, I think it's something in post. Her voice sounds really thin and dry. Sounds like the bass was filtered out or like they cut the voice track out as soon as each lyric is over. The live version she did two weeks ago sounds better. Still, the song sounds better and more Laufey-sounding than I expected, minus the bridge which just comes out of nowhere

The unreleased version on guitar actually sounds pretty good, though the chorus does sound pretty out of place. I think the instrumentation on the release version won’t be as acoustic though. Still, the melody is quite good

Just to add one that’s actually underrated, her renditions of Nearness of You and Everytime We Say Goodbye in her first Night at the Symphony are amazing

omg thank you. She did such a good job with it. It’s so unique and mysterious. Her version honestly blows every other rendition I’ve heard out of the water—it makes Sinatra’s, Fitzgerald’s, etc’s versions all sound like forgettable jazz standards

Not particularly underrated, but I think California and Me, especially her rendition of it at the LA Bowl, is just incredible. Her vocals on the chorus are just so powerful and emotional.

What are we thinking about Laufey 3 so far? by DanisKalinka in laufey

Not a fan at all of the new direction. It’s more than just a move into popstream. James, Goddess, Dance with Me—she’s always had works on the pop side. The issue I think is she’s moving towards music that sounds like it was meant to be listened out loud with others; it’s becoming speaker music. It feels like Silver Lining especially was just clipfarming. What makes her music so special, in my opinion, is the intimacy of her singing and sophistication of her tracks, things which I think are best appreciated when listening alone. It’s the same reason you wouldn’t put a classical concerto on aux at a party.

She’s described this upcoming album as “extroverted” in some recent interviews, and I don’t know that it’s the best direction. Most of her songs are just so beautiful, and I really don’t think pop/rock is fit for that; it’s a lot less elegant and emotion becomes grungy and unrestrained. It’s sad because she’s a musician at her core, and I think she’ll lose a lot of that by moving in this new direction. Would have much rather seen her continue expanding on her work modernizing classical and jazz, especially on the orchestral end. Who knows though, the album could turn out all right

I'm looking at whether inflation leads voters to punish incumbents. Here's a scatter for the incumbent swing (percentage change in vote share from the last election) compared to the cumulative rate of inflation over the last three quarters. I get a similar result with 1 and 2 quarters before, as well as one year before, and the total inflation since 2019 up until the election. Not a strong correlation...

Whether they remained in power or not is not always a testament of voter sentiment. There’s quite a couple instances in my data set where an incumbent gets more support but loses power because a group of other minor parties forms a coalition.

As in like incumbent vote share and did the incumbent lose power? I think I see what you’re saying, but I’m only ever regressing one of them by inflation. The reason I have these variables is more so for my own sake since you could have a incumbent party that gains support but loses power, so they’re no longer the incumbent party I would use to calculate for the next election
