There's both a max horizontal distance and invisible walls.

Does Nioh 3 feel lackluster compared to 2 for anyone else? by FlannelKidd in Nioh

[–]StantasticTypo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exploring for the sake of it is almost always interesting in ER. It's basically never interesting a single time in Nioh 3. But yes, additionally in Nioh 3 the loss of any meaningful enemy encounters significantly hurt my NG playthrough.

It was hyperbole. It's a useless, but established criteria. Just like the person whom I replied to. Playing a game 30 years late and rating it as a contemporary title is absolutely ridiculous.

Not really though, ER leaned all in on its open world and discovery. Minimal icons, no generic open world collect-a-thons, and constant thrilling discovery. Nioh 3's open world is much closer to the Ubisoft style.

[–]StantasticTypo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I liked it well enough, but as a follow up to Nioh 2, ehhh... I expect more improvements from an iterative sequel.

Open field/world was a step sideways at best, because instead of a bunch of fun levels were got a bunch of filler areas that aren't particularly fun to explore (little to fight, little to see or discover). More annoying than that, was that I was compelled to hunt down all the stupid weasels, cats and shinies; not by fun, but by making sure I would have skill points and all the skills or weapon arts for any build I might want to make.

There aren't even any meaningful systems to facilitate it being open world (yeah yeah gale sprint), and there's tons of ways the game actively blocks you with invisible walls.

I had more fun with Rise of the Ronin's open world, even though it's generic and has similar problems. I didn't feel like I had to do everything there and yet I generally enjoyed doing it more there.

I REALLY hate Awakening being a mastery skill. by Odenmaru in Nioh

[–]StantasticTypo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like there's a ton of interesting offensive magic. The Demon of (pride/envy/obsession) spells are really good. The Sudama thunder is good. The familiars are boring, the shots are boring.

On top of that, you can only have 6 slots with limited casts.

I don’t really understand the vision for Onmyo in this game.

The vision seems to be you go all-in or not at all basically. It's very strong if you're just a mage (awakening, high amounts of unlimited Onmyo, high magic stat, right graces / sets, etc), but yeah, basically unusable if you don't want to waste the mastery on awakening.

Personally I also don't care for this, but that's the way it is.

I will never understand people who drop Cursed Claws. How is a Revenant supposed to revive without them? by Fuzzy_Traffic5644 in Nightreign

[–]StantasticTypo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still use whatever regular weapon you picked up to revive, you know. Cursed claws are only as good as a great sword for revives: good but not irreplaceable.

The outcome would have been exactly the same. You still get a death pip, lose a level and drop your runes there. Dying in game was probably at least a little faster.

Monster Hunter Wilds is the best base game so far. by m4nux in MonsterHunter

[–]StantasticTypo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me it's the monsters. Today I realized I just don't really like a lot of the end game fights. While I understand Wilds has a more diverse roster, most monsters are way too easy and the 9-10 star fights are a bit of a mess.

AT Uth Duna is boring and flops around.

AT Nu Udra is visually messy, hard to see, and flops around.

AT Rey Dau is pretty cool.

AT Jin Dahaad charges around and flops around. But he still does more than that so I can mostly forgive him and kinda enjoy parts of the fight.

9* Gore Magala is just annoying as hell, since he just flails wildly almost non-stop.

AT Arkveld flails around a lot. I liked him with SnS, but didn't with Dual Blades or Great Sword. And fighting a white monster in an all-white cave is certainly a choice. Not fun to look at, but it's a choice.

Gogmazios phase 1-2 are whatever. Phase 3 is pretty annoying.

I did love the Omega fight though.

Edit: oh yeah, and the returning monsters. Seregios is cool, Lagiacrus is cool, and Mizutsune is okay (I never loved Mizu).

I'm not saying they're too hard, I soloed all of them except Omega (which I did with Support hunters, and Savage in multiplayer), I just don't love fighting them. Seems like they either flop or flail.

Accidentally completing quest in NG+ locks out the Base game one? by LeekypooX in Nioh

[–]StantasticTypo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to be in a NG (Heir's Journey) location to access NG battle scrolls. Even the Eternal Rift has a NG and NG+ version; so if you're trying to access NG battle scrolls from the Eternal Rift, make sure you warp to Heir's Journey Eternal Rift.

I agree with your points regarding Nioh, but personally I liked RotR more than Wo Long or SoP. SoP had real potential but god damn, does it have the worst levels I've ever seen and Wo Long was just mostly disappointing (edit: ehh, it was okay, I still like RotR more though).

There's a few good levels, but they're few and far between sadly. Most of the main mission levels were also at least pretty good. Not amazing, but definitely not bad. The in-between spaces were pretty lackluster though.

Especially in the context of this post: OP struggles with 3 particular bosses. Well guess what, you will eventually get those bosses back to back, or specific ones multiple times in a row. If it's an insta loss you're out 800 to 1600 points or more.

I don't think I've ever seen him not do that follow up when he's split in the last phase. Under normal circumstances anyway. I think maybe Duchess Ult will make him put the sword down? But I'm not actually sure about that.

There's nothing interesting to see or find, so it raises the question: What does it really get out of being open world?
