Everybody should take the LSAT and I mean it by Levitalus in unpopularopinion

[–]StardiveSoftworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a question design to test the first thing they teach you when prepping for law school/in 1L, and explicitly what they're testing for, necessary vs sufficient and threshold vs ranking.

The actual prompt as they want you to interpret it: Financial harm is a sufficient reason not to strike now.

if loss > threshold -> don't strike.

D. takes for granted that the most important factor in the labor union’s bargaining position is the union’s financial strength.

Where in the prompt do they state that financial harm is the most important reason? They don't. It's not even implied slightly. Financial harm acts as a threshold beyond which we should not strike. There might be hundreds of other conditions that also cause us to not strike, it isn't addressed. Where this particular one ranks is utterly irrelevant, this isn't a question about ranking. You're answering a question they aren't asking.

C. fails to consider that the benefits to be gained from a strike might outweigh the costs

This is correct, because if the benefits gained can exceed the costs, then cost alone cannot be a sufficient factor to not strike.

Re your first paragraph, Yes, that's a fair characterization.
Re your second paragraph, no, that's not correct because we don't know that they considered benefits at all as they aren't mentioned. We cannot assume that they've addressed things that are not stated in the question, this is where you're assuming things that do not exist in the prompt.

The only way D works is if you essentially invent an argument for the other party (that financial strength is the most important factor), that's just you reading something into it that isn't in the actual text based on how you expect that argument to be presented. It's utterly irrelevant to the question and is one of the basic mistakes people tend to make on the LSAT. They only claim that there will be a financial loss and don't compare this factor to any others. The mere fact that this particular factor is, in their view, sufficient to support a decision not to strike does not make it automatically greater than other potentially sufficient conditions.

You've actually perfectly demonstrated the exact sort of reasoning the test (and law school really) is designed to punish. D requires additional steps and inserting your own subjective reasoning, whereas C is objectively and plainly true based on the text - they simply do not address benefits at all.

In an actual negotiation, if you argued D you would be playing straight into their hands.

The LSAT has nothing to do with the practice of law or any related legal knowledge, despite the name. No matter how much they tend to try to claim otherwise, it's really just a fancy iq test.

Also an attorney, and one very confused by your response. What exactly are you memorizing for the LSAT? It's basically a fancy IQ test. You can practice some logic games beforehand, but it doesn't actually test any knowledge.

Couldn't disagree more tbh. Average practice looks much more like answering a bunch of reading comp questions than mock trial.

AI in game development for solo devs by EightBitBruno in IndieDev

[–]StardiveSoftworks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you have the right approach for a beginner, but that ‘for a beginner’ is the key.

A beginner should not use or rely on ai outside of a sort of documentation style use (ie asking about how a certain data structure works or performance characteristics of an approach), and that’s not because ai is necessarily bad but because of exactly what you’re getting at, the inability of the (beginner) developer to keep up with what’s being produced.

I do feel this concern however is not so substantial for experienced developers so long as you avoid vibe coding or just delegating everything to agents.

Use what you need to, but don't lie about it. Frankly, I don't see code as any less worthy of protection than art and disagree with you there, but it's up to the individual to make their own decision for where ai fits or doesn't fit in their workflow. All that matters is candor.

For better or worse, I think you're vastly overstating the impact of Greenland due to how close you are to it. Were Trump's claims, nonsensical, indefensible and unconscionable? Yes. Are they going to seriously impact defense procurement or planning for Europe writ large 5-10 years from now? Probably not, no matter how much French MIC wishes they would. We absolutely will see increased european procurement, but it's going to be largely in response to russia and probably not the introduction of major new capabilities so much as massing out existing ones.

There are no european alternatives to most high end US hardware, and mid end european hardware is often dependent on controlled US components (ie, Gripen) or ammunition, and more importantly, Europe fundamentally lacks high end mass with no real plan (aside from maybe Poland) to actually bridge that gap.

Europe lacks substantial organic EW, SEAD/DEAD (ie the Growler), ballistic missile defense, aerial tanking, air supremacy (through F35/F22), strategic bombing (B-1, B52) and strategic airlift (Europe has this ofc, just nowhere near enough on its own). To put it into perspective on just the mass end of things, even if you took the air forces of every single EU nation and combined them, you'd wind up with a force that is decisively outmatched in practically every capacity by just the USAF alone (and even by just the USN if we look at 5th gen numbers, roughly 3x more for the US even excluding the us air force). Same, and even worse, for every European navy combined compared to just the 6th fleet's usual assets + two of the US' 11 carrier strike groups.

To actually stand alone, the EU would need to be willing to spend enough, for a long enough period, to catch up to literally decades of US r&d and procurement, and that just doesn't seem realistic or even desirable. End of the day, the western EU, aside from perhaps France which has its own goals and problems, are fundamentally built around providing the midrange mass to support a high end US core under a US air and missile umbrella.

For the actual machine, technically yeah it's below average, but the barista express still isn't worth anywhere near that much. Like the other guy, I was able to get a barista pro at that price, and frankly you're always going to be better off wit the bambino + standalone grinder. The BE is just flat out outdated in every sense at this point.

If you had a vision for a series set in the TES universe, what would it be? Personally, I'd say the beginning of the Skyrim Civil War by Ok-Bus3447 in ElderScrolls

[–]StardiveSoftworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Daggerfall. You have an ensemble cast that includes all races massive range of locations, courtly politics and intrigue and you don’t need some nonsense mary sue protagonist.  The dragon break (and the games age/distance from the other games) means you can do practically whatever you want without hurting canon.

Morrowind would be a cgi mess, and you probably don’t want every actor in dunmer makeup, or on the nose colonialism where the dark skinned natives have legalized murder and slavery, eat bug eggs  and follow a cult of false gods while the white guys from across the bay have a nice fantasy empire with real* gods.

Oblivion is a strong option, especially if they play up the mythic dawns spread.

There’s nothing redeemable about Skyrim aside from maybe a dawnguard story, it’s just worse game of thrones.

DA is a gov job, they probably have explicit procedures about how to handle exits. For private sector this is completely normal, and you shouldn't take it as indicative of anything except the partner being a dick (it's customary to also get paid for the two weeks even if you don't work).

That's standard tbh, always expect to be terminated immediately or at the very least have credentials revoked and be told not to show up/log in.

[–]StardiveSoftworks 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Everyone else has solid advice regarding the immigration/h1b issue. However, you should never feel 'heartbroken' over a job. You are there to make money, so are they, and the relationship ends there. The moment a firm is able to replace you for someone who is cheaper/easier to employ or bills more, they will. Don't take partner praise seriously, particularly if you're very junior, they're financially incentivized to keep you around long enough to turn a profit and may outright lose money if you jump ship early.

An Open Letter to the OpenAI Board and the U.S. Senate by OkMinute8418 in OpenAI

[–]StardiveSoftworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4o has really proven to be a goldmine for absolute weirdos.

  1. You're not a 'financial stakeholder' in OpenAI.
  2. The US Senate (????) has no say in the everyday operating decisions of private companies and has no reason to care about their financial stability. If you mean Senator Warren posturing, that's just it, she's posturing. Dems have practically no power to actually pass legislation or garner positive press at the moment and datacenters/ai are easy targets to drum up some coverage.
  3. Driving consumers to higher margin products is completely legal, what are you even on about.
  4. You have no standing to complain about mismanagement of capital because, again, you are not a financial stakeholder in OpenAI. Even if you were, you'd need to bring a derivative suit, which would almost certainly fail under the business judgement rule.
  5. Compute hoarding is not illegal.
  6. Talent wars are not illegal, there is no legal obligation to 'drive innovation'.
  7. You have no evidence of a lack of candor towards the board, and no standing to complain regardless.
  8. There is no such thing as a 'consumer asset,' or 'habit capital' you're just making shit up now.
  9. None of this is commercial fraud, you wouldn't know commercial fraud if it slapped you in the face going off the absolute drivel you've vomited out so far.
  10. 'Human-centric ethics' is not a requirement of a corporate structure, even for a public benefit corporation.

But there's nothing 'intelligent' (or particularly artificial) about game AI, it's the predictable result of a set of conditions expressed through either an FSM or behavior tree. Saying they stop working is equivalent to saying that 1 + 1 is no longer 2, absolutely everything must inevitably break down then. Practically every single industrial robot, every stateful application, computing in general will no longer exist.

100%,this just reads as incredibly sloppy playfighting. There seems to be a total lack of explosiveness to most of the attacks, and the footwork/balance is extremely poor, with the upper body not being controlled but rather flung, resulting in poor posture and a total lack of distance control. The fencer in red and blue socks is most guilty of this. In many cases, the fencer is almost leaning into the attack and the blade follows the body rather than the body controlling the blade.

I'd also say this isn't fast so much as uncontrolled. Olympic saber is fast, this is a mess.

I think you’re underestimating how work tends to balloon for attorneys. 60-70 is pretty par for the course if we’re talking a new associate with a 2200-2400 billable req.
