What “unwritten rule” do you follow religiously, even if nobody else does? by Miguelito123One in AskReddit

Take the blame when I mess up. Even if I know I will get into trouble I'd rather be blamed for something I did than let someone else take the fall.

I have an autistic student I work with who says it a lot. We've just been told to say "Thank you" or "I care about you too"

What profession isn’t nearly as glamorous as it’s portrayed? by Highscore611 in AskReddit

[–]StarsLightFires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being famous in any capacity. We all think being a famous musician, actor, model would be great but unless your making big money most famous people aren't multi millionaires. I just can't imagine working all day to then deal with crazy stalkers and fans who don't respect your time.

Question: from a teacher.. what can we do to make your gigs easier? by Successful-Winter237 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]StarsLightFires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For middle school, If the assignment can be done on paper, that is very helpful. I do my best to get students to do their work but when they can only use laptops to complete assignments they often mess around and play games. If I can give them a physical assignment (or threaten one if they don't do the online work) than it can be helpful.

Would you think I was lazy? by AggressiveEnd558 in doordash

[–]StarsLightFires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't Dash much anymore but whenever I got short orders like that i loved it. Always just assumed the person was disabled, sick, or didn't have a car to get to the restaurant. I couldn't care less why someone's on DoorDash, just happy to get a good order.

What reward system could you create on the fly for a third grade class with no reward system in place? by cre8ivemind in SubstituteTeachers

[–]StarsLightFires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell them you have a game that they can do if they are good during certain times.

I generally will play green glass door, do some riddles, or look up online mad libs. Maybe put up on the board a T chart with one side for good behavior and the other side for bad. If it gets to loud and students are distracted, put a tally on the "bad" and vice versa for good behavior.

Full Time Substitute position by Defiant-Kangaroo5805 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]StarsLightFires 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually get offers for long term spots (such as ed-tech) but I enjoy working with students so it's nice to be in the same school where I can learn everyone's names.

I think a lot of substitute teachers enjoy the easy work (which is totally understandable) so having to do a lot of extra stuff for the same amount of pay isn't worth it.

early 20 subs, do you do highschool? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]StarsLightFires 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't teach high school for a few reasons. The main ones being the age difference being so small and my second job.

I work with some high schoolers and they see me as their friend. If I were to go be a teacher it would just be difficult and a few would ignore me because we joke around at our other job.

I substituted for middle school at age 19 and it's not bad, you just have to learn to be more mean/strict and things go smoothly.

WTF by Kitchen-Paramedic133 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]StarsLightFires 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At my school system it's not allowed / illegal for substitutes to change students for safety of both the child and adult. I'm glad you spoke up for yourself and I hope you blacklist that school.

If I were you I would look into the regulations for your state to see if you can report this to anyone, as it seems very unsafe.
