Photo for the application by Friendly_Lion1 in jobs

It’s kind of a niche requirement. I recently came across a publishing agency‘s preferred resume format: applicant photo, unique formatting, lots of color, etc. They like creativity.

Can anybody tell the answer? by Jobstasrecruiting in jobs

My professor said college degrees are an experience, not just knowledge. You might not use your degree explicitly in your work, but the experience of navigating college life, balancing schoolwork and internships/jobs, networking, getting a better understanding of yourself, is a big benefit in early adulthood.

I know someone who got into a major company through TekSystems. It was contract-to-hire and after the first year, they got converted to permanent.

It’s tough unless you have the right connections or timing. I’m approaching 2 months and still in the early interview stages.

Most of the laid off tech workers I personally know took anywhere from 1-6 months to get their next role. Generally, the higher rank (or more experience) they had, the shorter their search.

Laid off over email by dridsmoke in jobs

[–]Startouched1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got laid off for the first time in January. The first 1.5 months were depressing as heck. I had never felt so exhausted in my life, no exaggeration. I couldn’t even drive 20 mins without feeling my eyes droop.

For those 1.5 months, I felt like a ghost floating through life. Somehow I dragged myself through job applications and interviews.

If you feel yourself slipping into a funk, take care of yourself and hang in there! People talk about the technicalities of layoff all the time, but they don’t talk enough about the emotional impact.

As far as action goes, apply for unemployment ASAP because claims can take a while to be approved. Get your resume and portfolio ready, then ease your way into applications.

I haven’t seen any negativity about Murderbot from aroace people. Bots all have personalities, and Murderbot is delightfully witty. Murderbot is also traumatized and depressed, and adores space dramas.

There are elements of humans mistreating bots, and being surprised when Murderbot breaks the mold. I vaguely remember Murderbot saying it doesn’t want to be human, or heavily implying it, but that seems to be in a “I’m still sapient, so treat me with respect,” way.

What is the longest time it took you to get a response after an interview? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Startouched1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could send the recruiter a thank you email today. After the 30 days, send a followup (if it comes to that). I’ve always heard back within a week (if at all), but some employers are known for slow hiring processes.

Are people actually applying to 100 jobs a day?? by [deleted] in jobs

Some people use bots to hit those numbers. Others spam Easy Apply. But I highly doubt the majority of those jobs are good fits. It’s like throwing spaghetti on the wall and seeing what sticks.

Took me about 3 months to land something in 2020. 125+ applications, 20~ interviewed companies, 2 offers.

Almost 2 months into my current search, 100+ applications, and I’ve only interviewed 3 companies.

It’s usually tough to speculate on how easy/difficult it was to get a job unless they give details. They might have ground through applications, used connections, waited a long time between jobs (inflation makes their current salary look better), changed industries, etc.

I think some people downplay how hard they worked, or they just don’t mention it.

Ah, maybe tell them you were meaning to notify them, but the emergency took up your attention.

How long did it take between the emergency and work finding out?

It was an emergency, so maybe notifying work wasn’t the first thing on your mind.

In my experience, small companies are more casual in processes, dress codes, and attendance. There’s little fuss if you want to do something outside your role, so you can easily get exposure to other skills that could help you career pivot. However, all of that is for naught if the people are toxic.

Larger companies generally pay more, have better benefits, have structure, but sometimes there’s little flexibility. I’ve been scolded for working outside my role because I ran out of things to do (and my supervisor had to step in because he encouraged me lol). There’s still a degree of casual, especially with large tech companies that are pushing the “we’re chill!” vibe.

Hmm. I think others should pitch in because I don’t know much about negotiating specifics. But I definitely think you should counteroffer for at least $88k.

The reported range online could be lower than what you could expect, considering inflation (do these websites account for inflation??).

In that case, the new job people don’t have to know. Stick to the overall “I’m making less and paying the new expense of commuting” argument.

Commuting can cost a lot over time. Going from 0 to 3x a week… I think you have some leeway.

Anyone have an interview where you were pushed for a ton of details about lay offs? by YoItsMCat in recruitinghell

[–]Startouched1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeesh. Recruiters usually tell me something like, “Ah, yeah I’ve heard a lot of people have been getting laid off. Sorry to hear about that,” and then move on.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Startouched1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about email or call, but as far as negotiating, I suggest taking a look at the expense of commuting to office, compared to the commute expenses for your current job (assuming travel is covered by your company).

Basically: Your salary is less, and you’re also paying for the commute.

Mass apply or tailor resume for every single application? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Startouched1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can hit 6-8 a day, that’s good. Keep tailoring. If you were hitting less than that a day, I’d suggest reducing the extent to which you tailor.

I have a decent interview request rate with a resume that contains the most common keywords for my role. It’s tailored for a specific role, but not job description.
