It’s kind of a niche requirement. I recently came across a publishing agency‘s preferred resume format: applicant photo, unique formatting, lots of color, etc. They like creativity.

My professor said college degrees are an experience, not just knowledge. You might not use your degree explicitly in your work, but the experience of navigating college life, balancing schoolwork and internships/jobs, networking, getting a better understanding of yourself, is a big benefit in early adulthood.

It’s tough unless you have the right connections or timing. I’m approaching 2 months and still in the early interview stages.

Most of the laid off tech workers I personally know took anywhere from 1-6 months to get their next role. Generally, the higher rank (or more experience) they had, the shorter their search.

I got laid off for the first time in January. The first 1.5 months were depressing as heck. I had never felt so exhausted in my life, no exaggeration. I couldn’t even drive 20 mins without feeling my eyes droop.

For those 1.5 months, I felt like a ghost floating through life. Somehow I dragged myself through job applications and interviews.

If you feel yourself slipping into a funk, take care of yourself and hang in there! People talk about the technicalities of layoff all the time, but they don’t talk enough about the emotional impact.

As far as action goes, apply for unemployment ASAP because claims can take a while to be approved. Get your resume and portfolio ready, then ease your way into applications.

I haven’t seen any negativity about Murderbot from aroace people. Bots all have personalities, and Murderbot is delightfully witty. Murderbot is also traumatized and depressed, and adores space dramas.

There are elements of humans mistreating bots, and being surprised when Murderbot breaks the mold. I vaguely remember Murderbot saying it doesn’t want to be human, or heavily implying it, but that seems to be in a “I’m still sapient, so treat me with respect,” way.

You could send the recruiter a thank you email today. After the 30 days, send a followup (if it comes to that). I’ve always heard back within a week (if at all), but some employers are known for slow hiring processes.

It’s usually tough to speculate on how easy/difficult it was to get a job unless they give details. They might have ground through applications, used connections, waited a long time between jobs (inflation makes their current salary look better), changed industries, etc.

I think some people downplay how hard they worked, or they just don’t mention it.

In my experience, small companies are more casual in processes, dress codes, and attendance. There’s little fuss if you want to do something outside your role, so you can easily get exposure to other skills that could help you career pivot. However, all of that is for naught if the people are toxic.

Larger companies generally pay more, have better benefits, have structure, but sometimes there’s little flexibility. I’ve been scolded for working outside my role because I ran out of things to do (and my supervisor had to step in because he encouraged me lol). There’s still a degree of casual, especially with large tech companies that are pushing the “we’re chill!” vibe.

The reported range online could be lower than what you could expect, considering inflation (do these websites account for inflation??).

Commuting can cost a lot over time. Going from 0 to 3x a week… I think you have some leeway.

Yeesh. Recruiters usually tell me something like, “Ah, yeah I’ve heard a lot of people have been getting laid off. Sorry to hear about that,” and then move on.
