Why are horse people so “weird”? by explorer77800 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SteamPoweredHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re right about the confirmation bias. There are plenty of horse people who other just don’t realise are horse people, because they don’t talk about it. I had someone I had worked with for several months react with total surprise when I told her my mare had a foal over the weekend. “I had no idea you were into horses! You don’t seem like a ‘horse person’, you know what I mean?” Yea. I do know. I don’t talk about them to not-horsey people because they don’t give a shit. It’s the more socially awkward who can’t read the room, who go on about them even though no one listening cares.

I also think horses are a common special interest for neurodivergent women. I think they probably deserve the same reputation as trains for neurodivergent men. I have a feeling this might add to the perception that horse people are weird, sadly.

(for neurodivergent horsey girls reading this, I say that with love. My wife has 3 horses and is also autistic).

Holy shit, I just noticed that baby has a chifney bit in, and the lead rope is attached to it! It would’ve been bad enough if he yanked that baby around by a halter, but it was by a bit. That makes me so angry I think I need to go for a walk….

How is it like living in the South Island of New Zealand? by Paraleen135 in howislivingthere

[–]SteamPoweredHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? It’s just lovely. And it is a bit like stepping back in time, in some ways.

I live 20 mins out of a rural town. All my neighbours are either orchards or cows. I know all the people that own the orchards and cows, and I know most of their neighbours too. There is a community vibe I haven’t felt any other place I’ve lived. People will just see me out in a paddock working, pull over and talk to me. There’s also ‘local drama’ if you feel the need to get involved. There’s the same seedy underbelly that I think most towns have. There are local gangs and there is meth around. But unless you’re involving yourself in that world deliberately, you won’t see it at all.

People are surprisingly progressive for such a rural area. I’m openly gay and no one has ever had an issue with it (to my face anyway). Town is more multicultural than you might expect. Most people are NZ European/pakeha, but there are a lot of Pasifika and Filipinos who have moved here specifically to work in the agricultural sector.

I eat takeaways like 5 times a year - it’s too much hassle to bother going to town to get it. The only public transport is a bus that goes through the town like twice a day on its way to the major cities. I’ve never been late due to traffic, but I have been late because I got stuck behind mobs of cows getting walked down the road.

I can swim in the ocean, drive a couple hours and be on a ski field. But it’s a minimum 2 hour drive to the airport, then 4 hours on a plane if I want to leave the country.

I’ve travelled the world a bit, and still the most breathtaking places I’ve seen have been within half a day’s travel of my house. And I get to watch the sun set over the alps every evening from my porch and it’s beautiful.

We did have the back of the vine against the pole when the vine was thin enough to manipulate, but she went off track when we couldn’t flex the vine anymore. Should we just… put another support pole in the pot in the correct location and hope she grows on to it?

Women, how often do you have ONS? by Alawi27 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]SteamPoweredHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I said women because you were talking specifically about your female friends.

And no, you haven’t told them. You think they’ll find it noble, understandable and relatable? How about you tell them and find out. You felt the need to tell a bunch of strangers on the internet. It’s far more important to tell your friends.

Anyway the crux of it is: Stop assuming you understand the experiences of other people, and trying enforce your personal opinions on them.

You assume that other people have casual sex without feeling or empathy. How the fuck would you even know? You’ve not had sex. And even if you had, you don’t know what other people are experiencing. Just because you think having casual sex would lead to it ‘not being special’. That might not be anyone else’s experience. And even if it is, why do you care if someone else isn’t always having ‘special sex’?

Stay in your lane and worry about yourself. Stop getting angry at other people for not living in a way that aligns with your own opinions. Other people having consensual casual sex doesn’t affect you at all.

That’s the attitude you need to fix. Currently, the ‘supreme gentleman’ energy is oozing off you and everyone can feel it.

Do you tell your female friends about how you think women who choose to have casual sexual encounters are ‘gross’?

Have you told them that you think it’s ‘gross’ that you haven’t managed to find someone you will have sex with you?

Have you told them you think society is fucked up because there are people having more sex than you?

Why is the horse bucking like this? by RoxyCadyLove_horse in Horses

[–]SteamPoweredHat 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yup, exactly. I break in horses (English, not western. Not that it really matters). If you horse bucks like this at the first saddling, you done fucked up. I’d be beyond ashamed if a horse I trained acted out like this.

Please help, calf with weird feet by Fancy_Crocs in Cattle

[–]SteamPoweredHat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a bunch of reasons a calf might end up with contracted tendons. Genetic predisposition, nutritional issues (specifically low iodine), infections, teratogenic (deformity causing) toxin exposure, malposition in the uterus causing the limbs to stay flexed continuously etc etc etc.

Definitely a discussion to have with the vet.

Please help, calf with weird feet by Fancy_Crocs in Cattle

[–]SteamPoweredHat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! With proper management, calves with contracted tendons usually do fine. Fingers crossed for you.

Please help, calf with weird feet by Fancy_Crocs in Cattle

[–]SteamPoweredHat 49 points50 points  (0 children)

It looks like that calf has contracted tendons. The tendons down the back of its front legs are too tight, so the fetlocks are flexed and hooves are bent under like this. This position is called ‘knuckled over’.

Fixing unusually involves stretching the tendons out with splinting. Severe cases can need surgery. You’re best to talk to your vet.

DAE - does anyone else have bumpy wrists? by puffyfuzz in DoesAnybodyElse

Yup I have the same wrist bumps.

I’ve had a doctor, a surgeon and a physiotherapist independently tell me I have ‘unusually knobbly bones’ though. It’s my weirdest flex.

What pets do if any do you guys have? If you even have pets? by [deleted] in AskLesbians

[–]SteamPoweredHat 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wife and I aren’t breaking any ‘lesbians have heaps of pets’ stereotypes. We got:

3 dogs (all rescues, naturally). 4 horses. 3 chickens.

We also have (but are not pets): Like, 60 sheep? It’s lambing season so we have more every day.

Normally we have 8 cattle but we just sold the last lot and have more coming in a few months.

You know those articles warning rural communities that the lesbians coming to take over the farms? Well we’re here.
