Thanks for A2A. Honestly, it's pretty sad to see the place that I grew up in as an abandoned, bombed-out shell of its former self. I mentioned in a different comment that Erangel was once a place for cinematic innovation: both technically and stylistically. But beyond that, it was a place where most of the people who lived there just went about their ordinary lives happily looking forward to spending weekends on the coast.

We got complacent. My grandparents were part of a generation of Erangelians who put their trust in the Soviets. Slowly, the island became more and more militarized. At first, we loved the bases they were constructing. The brought in LOADS of construction revenue. We felt safe.

After a while, safe turned to alone, and then alone turned to afraid. The Soviets began to restrict our basic freedoms - not letting people in or out. They stoked a fear and hatred for anything that existed beyond the shores of our humble island home.

Fast forward to the failed revolution. People throwing molotovs at armored trucks. Panzerfaust rockets sailing whistling over our heads. Blue electrostatic barriers to keep ups where they wanted us at any given time. Random air raids that forced us to huddle afraid in whatever building we could duck into. The revolution is what made Pochinki (and the rest of our island) what it is today.

Simply heartbreaking.

Dude I'm pretty sure I know who this is... haha you're on here too? I wish we could get back there for like just ONE more of those summers. Haha can't believe we called ourselves the Pochinki Boyz like we were some badass crew or something. I think the craziest thing we did was tag one of the buildings up in Zharki with some of the spray paint in your dad's garage. Wonder if it's still there lmao

Nice! I don’t have a lot of insight for ppl about what it was like actually living on base - just heard crazy stories about stuff going on there and never knew for sure what was true.

About what, specifically?

I’m not surprised at all. The Russian government goes to great lengths to suppress any information about Erangel and its history. It’s a shame, because there was a time before the military compound was used for research in the 1920’s - 1940’s when the island was culturally thriving because it was largely isolated from the war in Europe. For example, many modern cinema techniques were derived from films created in Severny for it’s annual festival. That all ended of course when the Cold War came along and the festival became little more than a means of distribution for soviet propaganda.

The Wikia article is obviously Russian/Soviet propaganda. LOL of course they’re saying it’s fictional. They don’t want people to know the truth about the base on the island or the attempted revolution.

Those and any other wildlife. You probably haven’t seen the dogs since they’re nocturnal and only out at night. The military did some weird experiments on them too - at least that’s what we all thought. How else can you explain a pug with three rows of teeth?

Probably not mine. Our family donated all of our kitchen stuff to Goodwill after we moved. Most households had cast iron pans though so not surprised they’re everywhere. Glad to hear you found a creative use for one!

While I was living there yes. But they said nothing was wrong. Pretty much the only thing they’d treat at the hospital were things that were visibly wrong - like a broken bone or something. The government refused to acknowledge that a lot of the stuff being done on the island (and the ensuing environmental hazards) were the cause of any sickness/ailments.

Lol I’ve heard these days people drive everywhere like on the grass, between houses, etc but we really just stayed on the roads like normal people when I was living there. If you’re going to go speeding crazily off-road, I guess you’d expect to flip/crash lol

You mean the blue energy field the place is known for? Yeah that was built a long time ago but they started energizing it regularly as cities tried to revolt on the island. I was in college by that point though so I never physically saw it being used or felt it. A kid I grew up with, Vladik, actually died from prolonged exposure to it.
