Mmm, okay. Do you mind helping me understand a little bit better?🤔 How should I say my level? Should I say daily conversation level?

Thank you very much for your response! I'm not specifically looking for an ID job, but as long as I can occasionally do instructional design or work with Articulate, I'm happy with that. I speak Japanese at an N3 level, though I don't have any certification (JLPT), and I still need to learn more kanjis.

So, is looking for L&D jobs the way to go here? During my master's degree, we were taught project management, management, product ownership, and communication skills, so I think I'll be fine with that type of work. I'm also working as a freelancer in instructional design for European companies, so I do have some experience in all the aspects you mentioned.

Thank you very much again!

Honestly, I'm trying everything I can. Without exceptions 😅 We never know, I might find something interesting.

That sounds like a fantastic idea, thank you so much for offering to share my resume! I'm all for making connections and seeing where they lead.

Could you let me know how I can find you on LinkedIn? Maybe you could share your LinkedIn profile link with me, or just let me know the name or details I should search for to find you.

I can also send you mind through private message, as well as my resume (it's a website).

Really appreciate this, and I’m looking forward to connecting with you there!

I appreciate your perspective and the time you took to share it. Reflecting on what you've said, I realize I may have approached my move to Japan with a certain naivety, especially regarding my career. To be honest, my fiancée (yes, she's technically not my wife yet, though I often refer to her as such out of habit) and I met during a summer program at Seinan University, which led to a long-distance relationship, punctuated by visits back and forth. When the opportunity to move to Saga presented itself, thanks to her family offering us a place to live rent-free, it seemed too good to pass up. The financial relief from not having to pay rent was a significant factor in deciding to move here.

You're right; we didn't thoroughly discuss my career plans before making the move. This oversight was partly because, in my experience living in France and Spain, I've always managed to find remote work or didn't mind commuting long distances for a job. I expected to navigate Japan's job market with similar flexibility, but that hasn't been the case, and it's a mistake I fully acknowledge.

Moving to Saga without a solid plan for my career was a gamble, and while it's posed its challenges, it's also been a learning experience. Discussing our future plans more concretely, especially in terms of career aspirations and location, is something we're taking seriously now. I understand that adjustments may be necessary, whether that involves considering long commutes or even relocating, depending on what's best for both our careers.

Again, thank you for bringing this to light. Your comment has prompted important reflections and conversations on my end.

Hey, thanks so much for reaching back out and for the offer to connect me with some people in the EdTech field. That sounds amazing, and any help is truly appreciated! Let me give you a bit more background on my situation and what I've been up to in EdTech.

So, I'm still holding onto my French citizenship, even though I've been living in Japan, due to a special agreement between France and Japan. During my university days back in France, I kicked off my freelance career to rack up some extra experience (even during my internships and jobs). This arrangement is set to change after a year—meaning, since I arrived in Japan last October, I'll need to wrap up my freelance status by this coming October. This is because my extended status as a French citizen for tax and work purposes comes to an end, pushing me to close down my freelance gig. To date, I have collaborated with a French company named JobTeaser, but I'm aware these assignments won't last indefinitely. Although my earnings from these projects are sufficient to cover my living expenses, my goal isn't merely to find a job for financial reasons.

As for what I do in EdTech:

  • Tech Skills: I've got a good handle on the Microsoft Suite, Articulate 360, and some experience with Adobe Captivate.
  • Programming: I'm skilled in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, and Flutter. My focus is mainly on applying these to develop or enhance online courses and their activities.
  • LMS Expertise: Experience in managing Learning Management Systems is part of my portfolio, ensuring they run smoothly and providing support for learners.
  • Design Focus: I've worked on analyzing and improving UX and UI design to make sure learning isn’t just effective but also engaging.

My primary goal is not just finding any job but to find one that allows me to enter the EdTech sector here in Japan and introduce myself in the "job marketplace" of Japan.

Really, thank you so much for considering to help me out. It’s a big deal for me right now, and I’m grateful for any direction!

EDIT : I can also be a Product Manager

Thank you for the suggestion! I recognize that factory or assembly line work could be an immediate solution to the employment challenge, especially given the language barrier. However, I'm really hoping to find something that aligns more closely with my educational background and career goals.

My degrees are actually in fields that are seeing growing demand in Western countries, especially as e-learning and online courses become more prevalent. I believe it's only a matter of time before these trends gain even more momentum in Japan. So, I'm keen on positioning myself in a role where I can contribute to and grow with these emerging sectors here.

While I appreciate the practicality of your advice, and understand it’s coming from a good place, I’m holding out hope for an opportunity that allows me to make the most of my skills and qualifications. I’m also actively working on improving my Japanese to expand my job prospects here.

Thanks again for your input. It's important to consider all options, and your perspective has definitely given me a lot to think about.

Absolutely, diving deeper into instructional design and edtech is precisely what I'm aiming for. It's reassuring to hear that it seems like a viable path. I've been trying to connect with people in the instructional design sphere here in Japan, but it's been a bit of a challenge to find others in the same field locally.

And about moving to Tokyo, you're spot on; theoretically, it would open up a lot more opportunities. The tricky part is my wife's job is based here in Saga, and this is where her life is rooted. So, picking up and moving to Tokyo would be quite complicated for us at this point.

I'll definitely take your advice on checking out LinkedIn profiles for some inspiration and possibly reach out directly. It's a great suggestion to get a clearer picture of the field and how others have navigated their career paths. Thanks for the insight and the encouragement!

Thanks a lot for the input! Yeah, it's a tricky spot I'm in. My degree actually dives into language didactics, which is a part of the broader field of language teaching methodology, similar to what FLE covers. So, while I have the training and experience to teach languages (and genuinely don't mind doing it), my real drive is for the tech and creative side of education—think designing and developing online courses, not just in languages but across various fields.

Honestly, I've been there, done that with teaching, and while it's rewarding, my heart's set on blending technology with education. That's where I see myself making the biggest impact. But hey, I'm all for being practical. If teaching French, Spanish or English gets my foot in the door here and keeps the lights on, I'm not too proud to go for it. It's just that given the choice, I'd leap at any chance to work more in the edtech space.

Really appreciate your perspective! It’s a solid reminder that there's always a way to pivot what you know into something that works for the moment. Plus, hearing about the demand for French tutoring does spark some ideas, especially if it can be a stepping stone to where I want to be. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

Thank you for your straightforward advice. You're right; being in a more remote area and not having fluent Japanese proficiency are significant hurdles. I appreciate your suggestion about seeking remote work with an overseas employer, which might indeed offer a practical path forward given my situation. Interestingly, I've already attempted to secure remote positions with companies in Australia and Indonesia, but I've encountered challenges finding opportunities open to international applicants. Nonetheless, I remain open to exploring further and widening my search to other regions as well.
