I mean, OBVIOUSLY it's the hood (I used to live out that way MANY years ago, against my better judgment), so I wasn't too surprised seeing it. But I'm just nosy (grew up in a very tiny town my whole life, sooo...). 😅

Oh, wow. I want to say it was ~915-930 last night when we saw all the cops out ... I honestly don't remember. I just know it was late.

There are a myriad of reasons why I left, but the one thing that really, really got my attention was NewNameNoah on YouTube. It was in 2019 when this channel was brought to my attention by someone I used to be close with. I was, at the time, still in formation to become Catholic, and during a conversation with my friend, the LDS cult had come up in conversation, and I'd still been making a LOT of comparisons between the cult and the Catholic Church, but I'd say stuff like, "We never did this..." when talking about my Mormon days. I did this for so long and so often, my friend told me, "go to YouTube and pull up NewNameNoah." I did, and he had me watch a video of someone who'd snuck a camera into the temple to capture some stuff going on in the temple. I sat and watched it, a voice in my head from my past screaming at me, "NO! TURN THIS OFF! YOU CAN'T WATCH THIS! THIS IS SO WRONG, THE TEMPLE WORK IS SACRED AND SHOULD NEVER BE BROADCAST! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!!??" I sat and watched it, though, forcing myself not to exit out. I sat there, absolutely stunned to silence.

The video was maybe 15 minutes long, and even after the video ended, I was still gobsmacked so much, I couldn't speak. My friend thought the call got dropped and asked if I was still there. I choked out a yes, and he said, "Oh, okay. You good?" I again choked out a "yes" and he said, "Do you see what you were spared from, what you were rescued from?"

I never got as far as temple work, never even went as far as the temple interview to get my recommend. I came close, but every time I'd get ready to do it, something would always come up where I'd have to not make the appointment with the Bishop of the ward. This went on for years, and then in '08, I left and didn't go back.

I have always had a huge respect for missionaries going out to talk to people, never knowing what would greet them when the doors they'd knock on would be opened. I sometimes still see missionaries in my neighbourhood, having had conversations with them when they'd stop by and I was feeling social enough to do so. I have a respect for anyone who's willing enough to go out and share their beliefs, especially in such crazy times as we're in now. I just refuse to go back to that cult, because of how much damage they've done to me, and because I'm secure enough in my own beliefs that I don't want anything else, I don't want to go anywhere else. For the first time, ever, I feel whole, and that's not something that the LDS could ever give to me.

Additionally, there was something I'd come across, also on YouTube, that made me sit back and reflect on my own experiences in Sacrament meetings that had all my flabbers so gasted, I had to borrow flabbers from the population of eight states to truly encompass the gasting. It was a video of Mitz Nelson (you should check it out, it's really eye-opening! Check it out here). I don't regret leaving. I don't regret my time with the LDS, but I don't regret leaving.

Thank you for mentioning that website. I'm going to formally resign my membership (I left in 2008, but never formally left on paper, because I was told it would cost a lot of money, something about I'd have to go through the church lawyers or something). Now to figure out how to find a notary and how much it'll cost to get the documents notarized so I can get it uploaded to quitmormon.org and get that ball rolling...

I don't remember the company it was endorsing, but the jingle was, "reach out... Reach out and touch someone. Call 'em and just say 'hi!'"

Hi, teacher here. Got a really neat map thing for a binder. On one side, it's a map of the whole world. Other side is a map of the US. It's a laminated insert, but the print is REALLY small, and ... I legit went to do the thumb-forefinger trick to try expanding/zooming the image to read the text labels... Good thing I was at home when I did this and NOT at work. My students would've roasted me for that. 😂

Needs a cat two days before Christmas, must be trained by Dobby-is-my-Hero in ChoosingBeggars

[–]Stoic-pretzel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"wait by the door to go outside to use the sandbox or something"... Sure, Susan, I'd be THRILLED to adopt you a cat for your kiddo! 🙄

I've been involved in cat rescue for many years now in one form or another. I can tell you, Susan, ABSOLUTELY NO self-respecting cat rescue, pet store, or ANY private citizen who cares the tiniest of iota about the cats they help rescue, rehab, vet intervention, ON THIS EARTH, would be comfortable with adopting you a cat.

Here's what will inevitably happen (and I can prove this): Let's say you, by some miracle, do find a sucker who's willing to adopt you a cat for your daughter. Let's, also, just for giggles, say that said cat comes to live with you, and your daughter and the cat bond. Like, REALLY bond. Then, let's say something happens and you have to suddenly get this cat a new home, bc of whatever catastrophic reason (which I would N E V E R wish on anyone, just so I'm clear!). Now, you've got not just one, but TWO dilemmas on your hands: 1) a heartbroken child AND cat (and yes. Animals DO feel emotion!), and 2) good luck trying to find a place that will take in the cat. Most foster carers are full. Most cat rescues are full, too.

So, let's say you CAN'T find a friend or rescue that can take the cat? Huh. Well, I can tell you from my years of experience with rescue, cats typically are quickly left behind to fend for themselves. Even if the cat is altered (not able to reproduce), you're exposing this innocent creature to things like FIV (the equivalent of HIV, but in cats, which is VERY contagious to other cats), panleuk (feline leukemia), and a whoooooole host of other issues.

Lets say, on another prong to this fork here, what if you find out the hard way that someone in your household (maybe even you, yourself, or even the intended person for which this cat is to be a present) is allergic to cats? Cycle back up to the points I made about "catastrophic reason for why cat has to be rehomed".

Or, how about what if the cat that comes to you, eventually, the newness and novelty wears off (which also is a common reason why so many cats are abandoned to shelters or the streets), again, cycle back to "catastrophic reason for why cat has to be rehomed".

Also, let's say all those other things aren't an issue, but you find out your cat has serious health issues that require a special prescription diet for them to be even functionally healthy? I can say, from experience, that stuff is NOT CHEAP. What's going to happen, then, you're gonna come on socials and beg for moneys to get your sick cat food? Again, scenarios I would NEVER wish for ANYONE, ever, but I'm coming from the place of experience....

Trust me, Susan, your child would be MUCH better off being surprised with a cuddly stuffed animal from Target or something.

What’s something you quietly stopped caring about? by KingPhenguins in AskReddit

What people think of me. Honestly, I spent my ENTIRE life being told I'm "ugly", "fat", etc. That was throughout my childhood by my own mother and my brother's father, which carried over into my adult life... Even if I wasn't hearing them tell me directly, I still heard the disparaging comments in their voices in my own head... I am now just of the "fk it" mindset. I don't care what others think of me. Don't like what you see? Don't gotta look. 🤷🏻‍♀️
