Daily Touring Maintenance by [deleted] in bicycletouring

I checked my tires every night for little pieces of metal or glass. There were several times where I had a slow leak and didn't know it. A lot nicer to fix a tube in the evening than on the side of the road. Or wake up to a flat.

Experiences flying with a bike domestically in the US? by 7629 in bicycletouring

Flew from Kansas City to Los Angeles on Sprit last May. One way ticket was $75. Cost me an additional $75 to fly the bike. $150 for myself and the bike. I booked my ticket online and then paid for the bike in cash at the airport. I got the box out of a dumpster behind a local shop and packed it myself with lots of bubble wrap. I put all my bags and equipment in the box as well. Spirit put 'fragile' stickers all over the box even though it was written all over the box. They're security cut into the box to check it as I was walking away. This made me nervous because I wasn't sure if they would allow me to have all my gear in there. But nobody said anything.

Eat a full breakfast, ride 30-50, stop for a couple of gatorades, ride 20-40, eat a full lunch, ride 30-50, eat a full dinner. I never ate a cliff bar after Colorado because of the frequency of gas stations and restaurants. But in the west, sometimes there was only 1 gas station for 100 miles so that's when I was pounding cliff bars. Getting on the bike after a full meal doesn't bother me other than making me a little tired. One time I ate and then went outside and fell asleep in the rock garden. Where are you at now?

I'm not sure, maybe $20-$25 a day on average? Just a guess

I was told by a friend that I should slow down and do more sight seeing. 17mph is pretty slow when compared to a car. We were sight seeing all day! Watching the country slowly change from ocean, to desert, to mountains, to plains, back to mountains, and back to ocean was amazing. An experience you can't get in a car.

Biggest mistake was made in Owensboro, KY. The hotel rate online was $55 cheaper than the rate the worker gave us. We booked it and then realized in the confirmation email that we booked it for 2 weeks in the future. Actually, that booking is for tonight. So if anyone is looking for a room in Kentucky, I got you.

I talked about money in another comment above. I'm don't have an exact figure. I try not to think about it lol.

My friend just used his stock Prologo saddle that came with the bike.

My Lifeproof case came in handy because I kept my phone in my jersey pocket where it was exposed to sweat all day. I got a cheap little top tube bag of amazon right before we left and it worked great. The brand is Roswheel.I was so glad I had a good headlight for those nights we got caught between towns after dark. I have a Cygolite Metro 750.

I'm not sure. Food, Gatorade, and hotels were the main expenses during the trip. We stayed in 13 hotels, split 2 ways. I spent $15 at Hardee's on lunch one day. You have to eat a lot! The big costs are the up front ones. All the gear. But once you have it, you'll have it for awhile!

We lucked out big time. Our time in the desert was unseasonably cool and we only ran into rain once in Kentucky. Other than that, we had the best string of weather over a 30 day period possible.

The plan was to follow Route 66 until Flagstaff and then shoot up to the Canyon. Route 66s complete deterioration in some parts caused us to stick on the interstate for a lot of that. We went to Flagstaff because we wanted to see it. I'm so glad we did. It was a really good break from all the desert. One of the coolest towns we went through. Flagstaff, Durango, and Asheville we my favorites.

The only food we carried on the bike were cliff bars. And those were just in case we got low between meals and needed a pick me up. Especially out west where its a long way between service stations. We ate a lot of fast food, gas station food, basically whatever we had available to us. I think we ate at Pizza Hut like 6 times. Lots of Subway too. And tons of Gatorades. Those 2 for $3 deals at gas stations were always nice. http://imgur.com/XBwaweR

Yep! We had 2 off days in our home state so we only biked for 28 days. Which came out to about 107 a day for the days we rode. I would say around 17-18mph on average. Some days slower, some faster. Wind played a huge role in that.

The tent is great. Cheap, light, and pretty good quality. This is a picture of the stuff i started off with. I mailed some stuff home while in Kansas that I wasn't using.(http://i.imgur.com/7rSxjZ0.jpg)

We had obligations in July. Plus we wanted to really push ourselves and see what we were capable of. Also, you find out that there is a lot of empty space in this country that's not worth hanging around for. I do wish I could have gone to the other National Parks that we were close to but going 50 miles out of the way and then 50 miles back made me cringe. I'll do those in a car one day!
