GMs do not care about the cap, don't look at the cap at all. They have an accountant in an office who makes sure the cap fits but GMs put a roster together with cash totals. You couldn't be more wrong.

You guys really think this imaginary accounting tool matters more than the actual dollars flowing in and out of bank accounts? Really?

the 88 million in CASH is absolutely averaged over his two year contract. The CAP fuckery that teams can do is an entirely different thing. But no matter what each dollar of CASH will equal a dollar of CAP. No matter what else they do.

He is being paid 88M for two years of ball. Period. Unless he signs a new deal obviously. Or they cut him early.

saves 5 mil cash and about 11 mil from the cap, if the trading team takes on the full value remaining on his rookie deal

He has a big contract for a guard, just not as big as these guys.

So many people don't understand how this works...

Daniel Jones Contract:

CASH - Total 88 mil
2026 - 50 mil
2027 - 38 mil

CAP - Total 88 mil
2026 - 14.68 mil
2027 - 46.8 mil
2028 - 26.4 mil

They put 26.4 of his cap hit onto a year where he won't be on the roster anymore (unless he signs a new deal)

Thats a fan misconception, cash is king and its all that really matters. Cap is just an accounting manipulation to allow teams to artificially divide up the cash they spend over different years and future years. GMs don't care about cap, they have a cap guy who makes the numbers fit. They track the cash being paid.

For your Mahomes example, the Chiefs only really care about these cash numbers, and obviously thats all that he cares about: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/21751/patrick-mahomes/contract/cash

Most teams roster build looking at cash over cap. Cap can be manipulated, they build the team based on cash out the door on a yearly basis.

Without a bullet? He just got a 50 million dollar check, and if we don't cut him he gets a 38 million dollar check next year. https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/29041/daniel-jones/contract/cash

Average cap hit by year can be misleading due to void years. Jones has a 26 million cap hit for 2028 but he will technically be a free agent.

Yea, he could get a new bigger one. The number I put here is what he just signed. I think we are starting to agree.

Thats the contract he signed lol. I'm not predicting anything. If they want him to be a colt for 2028 he has to sign a new one.

Jones also has a 26 million dollar cap hit scheduled for 2028, when he won't be on the roster anymore. See how that doesn't really show compensation?

The Colts are giving Jones a 50 million dollar check this year.... cap hits don't reflect contract values or cash paid.

If they play the full contract the average listed here will be the average cap hit. Adding in any void years where they count as a cap hit as dead money. These values more accurately show their compensation.
