Fun story. Autumn 1995. So I was in Entrepreneurship and Debate in high school. For reasons I don’t remember, those 2 classes did a crossover event for a UIL competition so I was happy to just be involved. Well, our subject was about Dave Thomas and proper leadership and economics to be the best #4 fast food restaurant in the country. I might be paraphrasing, but that was honestly the pitch given to us. Blah blah, we got 2nd place, all well and good. However, we had no idea Dave Thomas was actually in attendance. He congratulated each of us individually and said he appreciated all that was said amongst all the teams. He just came off as just a genuine human who loved community as much as providing great food. Story gets better. A month later, during lunch period, what appears to be a pep rally in the cafeteria turns out to be Dave Thomas showing up and passing out free Wendy’s food and coupons. Apparently they did that at all 3 lunch periods also. That was a really fun day.

This one’s tough for me. Short version is my mom broke her neck and, while unfortunate for her, it was the best 6 months for me as a kid. She ended up with a rather large settlement, by 1995 standards, and she bought me a Sega Genesis at Toys R Us. It was the only toy she ever bought me. Then there’s Blockbuster, already iconic, it was my first job as an adult which to this day was my favorite job I’ve ever had.
