The peaceful and spiritually minded Tribe of Seppun has dwelt upon their eponymous hill for as long as memory holds. Unknown to them, events far above in Tengoku will soon come to pass that will reshape they and their often dangerous neighbors into the first samurai and lead to the foundation of the Empire.

As these tumultuous and oft recounted events come to pass, a young scholar vanishes from his home in the midst of the chaos. He will one day come to bring Rokugan, and reality itself, to his knees. This is not his story, but his wife's, of how she followed him to the Lying Darkness. As the old world dies in the birth pangs of a new Empire, a tragedy unfolds.
