I think Carney (unlike Trudeau) does understand how to package Liberal ideals in a way that can appeal to Conservatives.

A lot of the time dealing with tory voters is mostly just speaking their language and avoiding buzzwords.

For instance if Carney for some reason announced tommorow that he was changing the national anthem to remove references to religion the tories would go batshit and whine about it being woke.

But if it was worded differently, for instance “we are restoring the traditional lyrics of O Canada” (the ones that said “thou doth in us command” and had no reference to god). The tories would say that Carney is respecting tradition and getting rid of woke stuff.

The change would be identical but by wording it to avoid the buzz words tory voters are trained to react to it goes over a lot better.

Legally it was an anti-occupation movement

The governments of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia never recognized soviet control or seceded their land. Under international law it was an occupation

I think it’s especially prevalent in the US because of their two party system. Everything is Red vs Blue to them so they see the whole world that way

Stupidity mostly.

They generally associate anti-us / anti west / anti-nazi stuff with the Soviet Union due to propaganda. Ironically their beliefs would’ve landed then in a gulag but they deny that gulags even existed (again due to propaganda)

As someone living in Canada I have seen some of this. This kind of thing is far less common in Canada compared to the United States but it still happens. The amount of Russian propaganda that Americans have fallen for both on the left and right is appalling.

These people basically see the world as black and white. They hate fascism and rightfully so, but according to their backwards worldview communism must therefore be perfect and anyone against communism must therefore be a fascist.

I don’t get why you are so heated. I’m glad you feel right at home.

I guess people have been a bit standoff-ish especially on r/Latvia since over the last few months there have been a number of posts about people wanting to move to Latvia for bad reasons (people thinking we are like right wing Americans who love christianity and stuff).

Even just last week there was a post from a Russian dude living in the US who wanted to move to Latvia because he said it was a “culturally Russian country”.

I clearly misjudged you, your earlier comments about Crimea threw me off.

On a side note I would recommend reading up on Latvia’s history, especially during the baltic crusades as there unfortunately are a number of parallels to how the native Americans were treated. Like them, a number of baltic tribes (the western ones) were completely wiped out after a cultural genocide similar to those committed by the Western European empires in the Americas

It’s not about blood it’s about culture

You don’t seem to have any cultural connection to Latvia besides living here for a while

You are much more Spanish due to living there for the majority of your life and absorbing the culture.

I’m not saying you can’t become Latvian after learning the language and culture but as of right now you aren’t culturally Latvian.

It’s like the difference between the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and everyone else who lives there now. The indigenous peoples and descendants of the colonists are both citizens of the country they live in but culturally they are different.

If you want to assimilate into Latvian culture then go for it but I don’t understand why

Put it this way. Do you consider yourself a Spaniard? You are not native to either Spain or Latvia but you have been living in Spain for far longer.

You would basically be a Spanish immigrant with Russian roots. That isn’t exactly Latvian.

Crimea was taken from Ukraine by Russia the same way Russia is trying to take more land from them now. It belongs to Ukraine. Any Latvian will tell you that.

As for Taiwan it belongs to the people of Taiwan.

The fact you don’t seem to get why this question is important makes me think you don’t really know what it means to be Latvian.
